Kael didn't leave.
That was the first sign something had shifted.
Most nights, after tension like that, he would retreat, into duty, into silence, into the Alpha he hid behind. But this time, he stayed rooted to the ground, eyes dark, jaw tight, breathing measured like a man holding a storm in his lungs.
"You should go," Lyra said softly.
Not because she wanted him to.
Because if he didn't, she wasn't sure she could keep standing.
Kael exhaled slowly. "If I go now, I won't come back the same."
Her heartbeat stuttered.
"What does that mean?"
He stepped closer.
The bond flared, not loud, not violent, but intimate, like fingers brushing a pulse point.
"It means," he said, voice rough, "I will stop pretending I don't want you."
Lyra's throat went dry.
"You already stopped," she whispered.
Kael's gaze dropped to her mouth.
"I was trained to rule," he said. "Not to choose. Not to risk. Alphas who rule with their hearts lose everything."
Lyra laughed softly, bitter, tired.
"And yet here you are. Losing control anyway."
His lips twitched despite himself.
"You drive me insane," he said.
She took one step forward.
"So do you."
The distance between them vanished.
Not rushed.
Not violent.
Just inevitable.
Kael hesitated.
That single pause, his last line of defense, was all Lyra needed.
She reached up, fingers curling into the front of his tunic, and pulled him down.
The bond exploded.
The kiss wasn't gentle.
It was hungry. Frustrated. Months of restraint breaking at once.
Kael groaned into her mouth, hands finding her waist like they had always known where to go. His lips were hot, demanding, desperate, nothing like the controlled Alpha the court feared.
Lyra melted into him.
For the first time, the bond didn't ache.
It answered.
Kael broke the kiss abruptly, forehead pressed to hers, breath uneven.
"This is dangerous," he said.
Lyra smiled, soft, fearless.
"So is denying it."
Kael pulled back just enough to look at her.
Not at her title.
Not at her rank.
At her.
"If I cross this line," he said, "the council will know. The packs will sense it. Rhydian will push harder."
Lyra didn't flinch.
"Let him," she said. "I won't be used as leverage anymore, by anyone. Not him. Not the council. Not even you."
Something in Kael's eyes shifted.
Respect.
Desire.
Decision.
"You are not my weakness," he said quietly.
"You are my rebellion."
Her breath caught.
Kael brushed his thumb along her cheek, gentle now.
"I won't claim you yet," he said. "Not until you choose me without fear."
Lyra swallowed.
"And if I already have?"
His smile was slow. Dangerous.
"Then the realm is already in trouble."
