Chapter 45 - Birthday Countdown

Adeline's phone buzzed incessantly that afternoon, and she couldn't help but smile when she saw it was a group chat notification from Jane, Naomi, and Lila.

"Guys," Jane's message read, "can you believe Adeline's birthday is in two weeks? Time flies!"

"Two weeks?!" Adeline replied, her thumbs flying across the keyboard. "I didn't even realize it was so soon!"

Naomi was quick to follow, sending a string of emojis—party hats, balloons, and clinking glasses. "We've been waiting for this moment. You deserve the best birthday ever, Adele. Don't even try to argue."

Adeline rolled her eyes, smiling. "I'm not arguing. I just… I don't know how to even start planning. I usually keep it low-key."

"Low-key?" Lila's voice came through the call they immediately set up. "Girl, 23 is prime. We cannot let that slip by unnoticed. We need decorations, cake, fun, friends—maybe even a little surprise."

Adeline laughed, the sound easy and light. "A surprise, huh? You all are planning something already?"

"Of course," Naomi teased, "but we want your input. We don't want a total disaster either. So tell us, Adele, what do you even want?"

Adeline thought for a moment, her eyes drifting to the sunlit window beside her desk. "Honestly… I just want a relaxed night. Friends, food, maybe a bit of music. Nothing extravagant. I don't want to stress over it, that's all."

"Relaxed?" Jane raised an eyebrow over the video call. "With us, Adele, relaxed can still be epic. We'll make it fun, trust me."

"Epic but simple," Lila added quickly, "I like the sound of that. We can do small decorations, a cake, and a few surprises—like a playlist of your favorite songs."

Adeline felt her chest warm. The thought of her friends genuinely excited about celebrating her made her grin. She hadn't felt this… buoyant in a while. It was easy, light, fun. Not a single ounce of tension about other parts of her life.

They spent the next hour going over ideas. Naomi was a whirlwind of energy, bouncing between suggestions:

"What about fairy lights?" she asked. "Twinkly ones that make the space cozy but festive?"

"And a balloon wall!" Lila chimed in, laughing. "Every party needs one. Everyone will want pictures in front of it."

Jane, ever practical, raised a finger. "We need to consider the space first. Outdoor is better if we're doing lights and balloons; otherwise it'll feel crowded."

Adeline contributed shyly at first, then gradually warmed to the discussion. She suggested a small chocolate fountain, a few finger foods, and her favorite cake—vanilla with layers of raspberry filling. Her friends squealed at the thought.

"You're ridiculous," Naomi teased, "but I love it. Chocolate and raspberry? Classic. We'll make it Instagram-worthy, don't worry."

Adeline laughed at their excitement. "You don't even need Instagram," she said. "I just… I just want it to be fun. Real fun."

Jane smiled knowingly. "We'll take care of that. Promise. And you'll get to just enjoy it, without worrying about anything else."

As the brainstorming continued, the girls reminisced about past birthdays—some simple, some chaotic, some unforgettable for all the wrong reasons.

"Remember your 20th?" Naomi laughed. "You ended up covered in cake after someone tripped on the table."

"Oh my God, yes," Adeline groaned. "I thought I'd never live that one down."

"And your 21st?" Lila added. "You insisted on karaoke and then ran off mid-song because you were 'too shy.'"

Adeline rolled her eyes. "I was shy. It was… a lot of people. And noise. And…" she paused, laughing softly. "I just… I guess I'm better at letting go now."

The girls exchanged smiles. They could see it too—the subtle shift in Adeline. She wasn't as careful, as measured, as she used to be. She laughed more freely, her expressions were looser, and she allowed herself to enjoy the moment without overthinking.

They moved on to logistics, which somehow became just as fun as the ideas.

Invites: Jane volunteered to handle them, suggesting a small, intimate group of close friends.

Decorations: Lila promised to craft a few DIY touches—handmade banners, balloon clusters, and fairy lights.

Music: Naomi insisted on curating a playlist, packed with Adeline's favorite songs, from upbeat pop to mellow indie tracks.

"I'm really looking forward to this," Adeline admitted, a little softly, almost to herself.

"And we're looking forward to it with you," Jane said, reaching through the screen with a gentle smile. "You've earned this, Adele. You need this."

Adeline's heart warmed. They weren't just planning a party—they were giving her a moment to step out of her carefully constructed routine, to exist fully in joy for a little while.

The conversation drifted naturally from ideas to memories and jokes, until Adeline realized she had been laughing for nearly forty minutes straight. It was effortless, unguarded, and light. Her friends noticed the change too, smiling knowingly at each other.

"This is going to be amazing," Naomi said, "and you're going to love every second."

"I already do," Adeline replied, smiling at the ceiling. "I just… I can feel it."

The call ended, but Adeline lingered, staring at her phone for a moment. Her birthday was still two weeks away, but the anticipation was already making her heart beat faster, lighter. She could almost imagine the fairy lights, the laughter, the music—just her and the people who mattered most.

And for now, that was more than enough.
