Chapter 30 - Chapter 30: The Rain of Steel

[FILE 030: GLOBAL NEWS NETWORK - LIVE FEED]

Location: Tokyo, Sector 4 (Shinjuku)

Time: 48:00:01 (Deadline Reached)

THE ATMOSPHERIC ENTRY

It didn't start with lasers. It started with silence.

Then, the clouds turned red. Not the red of a sunset, but the red of friction burning through the atmosphere.

Thousands of black dots appeared in the stratosphere.

They weren't ships. They were Drop Pods. Solid tungsten coffins, twenty feet tall, falling at Mach 15.

Elena Vance sat in the driver's seat of the van, watching the dashboard monitors. Her hands were shaking as she lit a cigarette.

"They aren't slowing down," she whispered into the comms. "They're going to impact at terminal velocity. They're trying to create shockwaves to clear the streets."

Kazuki stood on a rooftop ten blocks away.

He was wearing the Mark II (Damaged). The right arm of the suit had been removed, leaving his black cast exposed. The chest plate was dented inward. He looked like a scavenger, not a hero.

"Brace!" Kazuki yelled.

BOOM. BOOM. BOOM.

The pods slammed into the city.

It sounded like the earth was cracking open.

Dust clouds the size of skyscrapers erupted from the impact zones. Windows blew out for miles. The ground rolled like a liquid.

THE GHOST RUN

"Now!" Kazuki ordered. "Maya, you're up!"

Haze (Maya) was crouching behind an AC unit on the roof. She popped a bubble of gum, but her face was pale. The sheer volume of destruction was terrifying.

"Okay," she breathed. "Okay. Let's get weird."

She closed her eyes.

She amplified her bio-signal.

[INFRASOUND: ACTIVE]

Down on the street, the Drop Pods opened.

Helix Drones poured out. These weren't the sleek soldiers from Season 1. These were the Glitchborn. Distorted, unfinished bio-mechs with twitching limbs and static for faces. They raised their rifles, scanning for targets.

But they didn't see Kazuki.

Maya hijacked their optical sensors.

To the Drones, the rooftop looked empty. To the Drones, the street was clear.

"I'm ghosting you," Maya's voice crackled in Kazuki's ear. "You have a 10-meter bubble. If you step outside of it, they see you. If you make a sound louder than 80 decibels, they hear you. Run."

Kazuki didn't sprint. He couldn't risk the sonic boom.

He engaged his thrusters at 5% power.

He slid off the roof, falling silently into the dust cloud.

THE NEEDLE IN THE HAYSTACK

Kazuki moved through the chaotic street.

It was a nightmare. Civilians were running, screaming, bleeding.

A Helix Drone marched right past Kazuki, its metal shoulder brushing against Kazuki's broken arm.

Kazuki flinched, biting his tongue to keep from crying out in pain.

The Drone paused. It looked right at him.

But thanks to Maya, it looked through him. It saw a brick wall. It chattered a burst of static code and kept walking.

"We need to get to the Command Node," Elena directed. "My scans show a High-Value Target landed in Yoyogi Park. If we take out the Commander, the Drones lose coordination."

"I can't punch a Commander," Kazuki hissed, weaving between burning cars. "I have one arm."

"You don't need to punch him," Elena said coldly. "I loaded a syringe into your left gauntlet. It's a neuro-degenerative virus. You just need to touch his neck."

"Biological warfare?" Kazuki asked.

"Survival," Elena corrected.

THE AMBUSH

Kazuki reached the edge of the park.

The dust was clearing.

Standing in the center of a crater was a Lieutenant. He was clad in blue armor, holding a heavy energy lance.

"Maya, cloak me," Kazuki whispered.

"I... I can't," Maya's voice wavered. "He's got a Psi-Shield. My signal is bouncing off him."

The Lieutenant turned.

His helmet scanned the area.

He saw the distortion in the air where Kazuki was hiding.

The Lieutenant raised his lance.

VWOOM.

A beam of concussive energy tore through the trees.

Kazuki dodged left, but the shockwave clipped him. He spun in the air, crashing hard into a vending machine.

His cast cracked against the metal.

Kazuki screamed, clutching his broken arm.

The Lieutenant marched forward, raising the lance for a killing blow.

"Target acquired. The Broken One."

Kazuki looked up, gasping. He couldn't run fast enough in this confined space without killing the civilians behind him.

I need a distraction.

"Maya!" Kazuki shouted. "Not him! The environment!"

Maya understood instantly.

She couldn't trick the Lieutenant's brain. But she could trick his ears.

She projected a sound.

[AUDIO HALLUCINATION: MALVORN'S VOICE]

Behind the Lieutenant, a booming voice shouted: "SOLDIER! STAND DOWN!"

The Lieutenant froze. He recognized the voice of his God.

He spun around, lowering his weapon. "General?"

There was no General. Just an empty street.

But that one second of confusion was all Kazuki needed.

THE INJECTION

Kazuki gritted his teeth.

He exploded forward. Mach 1.

He didn't punch. He tackled the Lieutenant, using his good shoulder.

They crashed into the dirt.

Kazuki jammed his left gauntlet against the soft seal of the Lieutenant's neck armor.

HISS.

The virus injected.

The Lieutenant convulsed. His armor locked up. He fell back, twitching as his nervous system shut down.

Kazuki rolled off him, panting. He held his broken arm close to his chest.

He looked at the fallen soldier.

"One down," Kazuki wheezed. "Ten thousand to go."
