Torifu said, "There is a reason basic Fuinjutsu is taught at the academy. It is useful for various things especially to decipher some seals that you encounter in your missions like how to disable some Fuinjutsu enabled trap or just identify what the trap is or how to use a storage scroll or an explosion tag correctly."
He continued, "Fuinjutsu is also a part of barrier ninjutsu. Since Fuinjutsu is so important, you are also taught calligraphy in the academy because you need to know how to write symbols for Fuinjutsu if you ever pursue Fuinjutsu later in your career."
The old man spoke patiently and clearly while sitting across from Shunsui in a training room inside the Akimichi compound.
Scrolls and practice papers were spread neatly on the low table between them. Torifu wanted Shunsui to understand the foundation of Fuinjutsu before moving to more advanced topics.
He explained how even simple Fuinjutsu knowledge could save a shinobi's life during missions by helping them recognize dangerous seals or use everyday tools like storage scrolls without mistakes.
Shunsui who was patiently listening to the old man raised his hand with a question.
Torifu smiled and said, "Go ahead ask your doubt."
"So does that mean that the barrier ninjutsu can only be used with Fuinjutsu seals and tags?" Shunsui asked with genuine interest in his voice.
Torifu nodded and explained carefully. "The larger scale barrier jutsus yes. There is a reason though Fuinjutsu tags are used for barriers. Those tags espressially for barrier jutsus store chakra and actively provide chakra to the barrier otherwise the barrier would not even last more than a second. The chakra required to sustain a good barrier is a lot and something an ordinary shinobi could not pull off."
'Probably that's why the Four Crimson Ray Formation barrier jutsu could only be used by four Hokage class shinobi. Because they are the only ones that could provide enough chakra to sustain it.' Shunsui thought
Torifu continued, "But there are barrier ninjutsus for a single shinobi too which can be used with both tags or just hand signs like a normal jutsu."
Torifu then took a pause as he remembered something important. "Some barrier ninjutsu absorb chakra from the surroundings instead of Fuinjutsu tags. Do you know about the sensory barrier surrounding our village?"
"Yes it warns us of anyone trying to intrude the village and keeps a track of every person chakra signature so if someone in the village disappears the sensory department is alerted for a potential threat in the village," Shunsui said having read this in the academy. He remembered the lessons clearly from his time there.
"The barrier only role is to sense all the people in Konoha so it can survive with chakra that is absorbed from surroundings. What I mean to tell you is, another method that barrier ninjutsu can be used is by having Fuinjutsu tags that absorb ambient chakra and use it to form barriers," Torifu said.
Shunsui's mind was already racing as he absorbed the information. 'What of a barrier that could absorb chakra from attacks to sustain them or even use those attacks against the enemy.'
An idea was forming in Shunsui's mind. He was going to work on his own barrier ninjutsu. A barrier jutsu inspired by the Shikai of his counterpart's friend in the Bleach verse.
And he already had a name for it: Hanjō Kekkai, the repulsion barrier. But that was for much later when he knew even the ABC of barrier ninjutsu. "Umm, do you know any barrier jutsus with hand signs that I might be able to learn?" Shunsui asked politely.
"You are lucky that the Akimichi clan is the best clan in the village when it comes to barrier ninjutsu." Torifu smiled with clear pride in his clan's skills.
"While I would not normally teach it to outsiders, the fact that you are Choza's student and an orphan thus unlikely to give Akimichi clan secrets to another clan, I am open to teaching you some of the hand sign based barrier ninjutsu if that is what you wish to learn."
"I am in your debt Akimichi san," Shunsui said bowing deeply, knowing how big of a deal it was for a clan head to share clan exclusive jutsus with an outsider. Sharing such knowledge showed great trust.
"Do not sweat it. You are the village's next generation and well, even my sensei, Lord Second did not hoard his jutsus. He openly shared them for any villager who had the potential to learn them," Torifu said with nostalgia in his voice. "Now let us start."
Torifu began the practical lesson by showing Shunsui the basic hand signs for a simple protective barrier. He demonstrated slowly so Shunsui could copy the movements exactly.
Shunsui watched carefully and practiced each sign with focus.
And for the next one month all Shunsui did was learn barrier ninjutsu, try and fail at creating different new barrier ninjutsus and learn how to effectively use barriers in fighting.
Also, he made sure to keep his Shikai active at all times. While people might think, it was just a easy thing. It was not. Having his Shikai activated at all times was very exhausting for him but he managed to preserve.
Shunsui even believed that using his shikai at all times without getting exhausted or tired was the first step towards achieving....Bankai.
