Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: Cocoyasi Village (Bonus Chapter)

Cocoyasi Village felt familiar.

Not because Ryu had ever set foot in it before—but because it sat too close to home.

The shoreline curved gently, water lapping against the docks with lazy familiarity. Orange trees swayed inland, their scent faint but unmistakable, carried by the breeze like something borrowed from a place Ryu *did* know. Fishing boats bobbed in place, ropes creaking softly, paint chipped and sun-worn in the same way villages near Gosa always were.

Close enough to matter.

Different enough to feel wrong.

Ryu stood at the rail as the ship slowed, eyes scanning the village with quiet focus. His Observation stretched outward—not sharp, not probing, just *open*. He felt people before he saw them. The subtle weight of attention. The slight tightening of air where conversations stopped too quickly.

Someone here mattered.

"Same sea," Kenji muttered beside him. "Different tension."

Aira adjusted the helm, already reading the mood of the port. She didn't need Haki for that. Ports like this survived by pretending trouble passed them by—and Cocoyasi was pretending too hard.

They docked without ceremony.

No greeting. No challenge. A few villagers glanced over, then quickly looked away. Others pretended to be busy, hands moving faster than necessary as nets were mended and crates shifted.

Ryu stepped onto the dock.

The wood felt solid beneath his boots. Real. Grounded.

And heavy.

"Stay with the ship," he said quietly to Aira.

She nodded once. "I'll be ready."

Kenji rolled his shoulders, the red-hilted sword resting comfortably at his side. "Let's not drag this out."

They walked into the village.

Every step felt like crossing an invisible line. Ryu could feel the pressure now—not hostile, not aggressive. Controlled. Like a presence that didn't bother hiding.

A man sat near the edge of the square, back to them.

He was massive.

Even seated, he was taller than most men standing. His coat hung loosely across broad shoulders, weathered and functional rather than decorative. No Marine insignia. No bounty hunter markings. Just a man who didn't need symbols to announce what he was.

Ryu stopped.

Kenji did too.

The man didn't turn.

"You're early," he said calmly.

The voice was steady. Measured. Not surprised.

Ryu felt it immediately—clear and unmistakable.

This was him.

"Hale," Ryu said.

The name settled into the air like a drawn blade.

The man rose slowly, unfolding to his full height. Up close, he was even larger—nearly three meters tall, built like something carved rather than grown. His face bore scars earned, not flaunted. The kind that came from surviving things that should have killed him.

His eyes were sharp.

Not cruel.

Assessing.

"So you remember," Hale said. "Good."

Kenji's hand rested near his sword. "Hard to forget someone who nearly crushed your ribs."

Hale glanced at him briefly. "You healed."

"Barely," Kenji replied.

Hale's attention returned to Ryu. "You shouldn't be here."

Ryu met his gaze evenly. "Neither should you."

A few villagers slowed their steps. Others backed away entirely.

Hale exhaled once, slow. "You've grown."

"Yes," Ryu said. "Because you left us alive."

Hale's jaw tightened—not in anger, but irritation. "That wasn't mercy."

"Then what was it?" Kenji asked.

Hale turned slightly, looking out toward the sea. "Assessment."

Ryu felt something sharpen—intent settling into place.

"You weren't pirates," Hale continued. "You didn't fight like criminals. And you didn't kill when you could have."

He looked back at them. "People like that don't die easily. I wanted to see if that was true."

Kenji scoffed. "So we were an experiment."

"No," Hale said flatly. "You were a risk."

Silence stretched.

Ryu stepped forward. "You broke us," he said. "You didn't have to. But you did."

Hale didn't deny it. "Yes."

"And now we're here," Ryu continued. "Not for revenge. Not to kill you."

Kenji frowned slightly but didn't interrupt.

"We're here," Ryu said, "because we won't walk away from that."

Hale studied him for a long moment.

Then his gaze dropped—to Ryu's sword.

The black hilt.

His eyes narrowed.

"…Interesting," Hale murmured.

He shifted his attention to Kenji.

And paused.

The red-hilted blade.

Hale's expression changed—not fear, not surprise. Recognition.

"Those swords," he said quietly.

Kenji tilted his head. "What about them?"

Hale took a step closer. The air thickened.

"Skilled-grade," he said. "Both of them."

Ryu stiffened. "You recognize them?"

Hale nodded once. "Not by name. By workmanship."

His eyes returned to Ryu. "That blade has tasted real hands."

Kenji smirked. "You saying you're impressed?"

"I'm saying you don't stumble into weapons like that," Hale replied. "Someone trusted you."

Ryu didn't respond.

Hale straightened. "So. You came back stronger. Armed better. And still think this ends without blood."

Kenji's smile faded. "We didn't say that."

The pressure snapped.

Hale moved.

No warning. No flourish. Just a step that devoured distance and a fist that came down like judgment.

Ryu felt it *before* it happened.

He moved.

Barely.

The blow grazed past him, cracking stone behind with a thunderous impact. Villagers screamed and scattered.

Kenji drew his sword in one smooth motion.

Steel rang.

Hale's forearm met the blade—and *stopped it*.

Armament hardened, dense and immovable.

Kenji's eyes widened. "—!"

Hale shoved him back, sending him skidding across the ground.

Ryu stepped in, knives flashing. He coated his arms instinctively this time, the weight settling without resistance.

He struck.

Hale blocked.

Once. Twice.

The third hit landed—*just* enough to draw blood.

Hale looked down at the cut on his arm.

Then he smiled.

"Good," he said.

The fight exploded outward.

And somewhere at the edge of the village, Aira watched the first clash unfold—hands already moving, eyes cutting toward the Marines beginning to gather near the docks.

Cocoyasi had never known them.

But by the end of the day, it would never forget them.
