Chapter 16 - Into The Rift

The air in the Rift Zone was charged with an unnatural energy that prickled against Akira's skin. The jagged landscape stretched before them, fractured and glowing with fissures of radiant blue light. In the distance, shards of floating rock drifted lazily in the air, defying gravity.

Teams scattered across the chaotic terrain, their sigils lighting up as skirmishes broke out almost immediately.

"Stick together!" Akira called, his flaming blade materializing in his hand. He scanned the battlefield, trying to make sense of the shifting terrain. "We need to secure a position before we're surrounded."

"This way," Mira said, already moving. Her shadowy sigil flickered around her like a protective cloak. "There's a high ridge to the east. It'll give us the advantage."

Kazuki smirked, sparks dancing along his fingertips as he jogged beside her. "Good call, shadow-girl. Let's hope the locals don't mind us crashing their party."

Rika brought up the rear, her barrier shimmering faintly around her. "I'll cover us from the back. Just keep moving."

The team moved swiftly, weaving through jagged rocks and glowing fissures that pulsed ominously beneath their feet. The ground occasionally trembled, a reminder of the unstable nature of the Rift Zone.

As they reached the ridge, Mira signaled for them to stop. "We're not alone."

Akira crouched beside her, his flames dimming as he peered over the edge. Below, another team was setting up a defensive position around a glowing objective marker—one of several scattered throughout the zone.

"We need that marker," Rika said, her voice low. "But they're dug in."

Kazuki grinned. "No problem. I'll hit them with a little thunder and lightning, soften them up for you guys."

Akira shook his head. "No. If we charge in we'll just waste energy and draw attention. Mira, do you see a weak spot?"

Mira nodded, her eyes narrowing as she studied the enemy team. "Their leader—tall guy with the glowing spear. He's calling the shots. If we take him out, the others will scatter."

"Alright," Akira said, flames sparking to life in his hands. "Kazuki, you distract them. Rika, cover us. Mira and I will take out the leader."

Kazuki gave a mock salute. "Consider them thoroughly distracted."

The attack began with a crackling burst of electricity. Kazuki's lightning arced through the air, forcing the enemy team to scatter.

"Contact!" one of them shouted, raising a shimmering shield as the lightning struck.

Rika moved quickly, raising her barrier to deflect a counterattack—a barrage of glowing projectiles that shattered harmlessly against her shield. "Keep it coming!" she called, her voice steady.

Mira slipped into the shadows, her figure blending seamlessly into the jagged terrain. Akira followed, his flaming blade flickering softly as they circled around the enemy team.

"There," Mira whispered, pointing to the leader—a tall boy wielding a glowing spear. He barked orders to his teammates, his movements precise and commanding.

Akira nodded. "Let's take him together."

They moved in unison. Mira's shadowy tendrils lashed out, wrapping around the leader's legs and pulling him off balance. He barely had time to react before Akira closed the distance, his blade igniting in a fiery arc.

The leader blocked with his spear, the clash sending a shockwave of heat and energy through the air. "You're out of your league, rookie," he growled, pushing back with surprising strength.

Akira gritted his teeth, holding his ground. "We'll see about that."

The leader thrust his spear forward, the glowing tip crackling with energy. Akira sidestepped, his blade slicing downward in a controlled strike. The flames scorched the spear's shaft, forcing the leader to retreat.

Mira struck from the shadows, her tendrils darting out to seize the leader's arm. He struggled, but her grip held firm. "Now, Akira!" she shouted.

With a surge of power, Akira swung his blade, the flames roaring as they connected. The leader's Sigil flickered and shattered, his spear dissolving into sparks. He fell to the ground, defeated.

The rest of the enemy team faltered, their formation crumbling without their leader. Kazuki capitalized on the chaos, his lightning scattering them as they fled into the Rift Zone.

"Objective secured!" Rika called, lowering her barrier as the team regrouped around the glowing marker.

Akira took a deep breath, extinguishing his blade. "Good work, everyone."

Kazuki sauntered over, grinning. "Not bad, flame-boy. Looks like we're starting to figure out this teamwork thing."

"Don't get cocky," Mira said, though there was a faint hint of approval in her voice.

Rika scanned the horizon, her expression wary. "That was too loud. Other teams will have heard the commotion. We need to move before they show up."

Akira nodded. "Let's go. The next marker isn't far."

As they moved deeper into the Rift Zone, the terrain grew more unstable. The glowing fissures widened, emitting pulses of energy that made the ground tremble. Strange shadows moved at the edges of Akira's vision, vanishing when he turned to look.

"This place feels… wrong," Rika said, her voice uneasy.

"It's the boundary," Mira said. "It's weaker here. Reality is starting to blur."

Kazuki frowned. "Great. As if this trial wasn't hard enough already."

Akira didn't respond. His focus was on the horizon, where a massive glowing rift split the sky. Energy crackled around its edges, and the air seemed to hum with raw power.

"That's the final marker," he said, pointing.

"And the most dangerous," Mira added. "Every team left in the trial will be converging there."

Kazuki's grin widened. "Good. Let's give them a show they won't forget."

Rika rolled her eyes. "You're impossible."

Akira tightened his grip on his blade, his flames sparking to life. "This is it. The final push. Stay sharp, and watch each other's backs."

As they approached the glowing rift, the ground shook violently, and a deafening roar echoed through the Rift Zone.

From the shadows emerged something massive a creature of pure energy and darkness, its eyes burning with malevolent light.

"What the hell is that?" Rika gasped, raising her barrier.

Mira's voice was calm but tense. "The boundary's breaking down. That thing is a Rift Beast."

Akira's flames flared as the creature advanced, its monstrous form radiating power. "Then let's take it down."
