Chapter 3 - ARC I: Episode 3:

🩸🪽 DARK ARCHANGEL

Episode 3:

When Heaven Began to Whisper

Morning came softly beneath the bridge.

It wasn't the kind of morning that arrived with sunlight and promise. It crept in slowly, gray and damp, carrying the distant sounds of the city waking up—cars passing, vendors calling out, footsteps rushing somewhere important.

Seo Jun woke with his cheek pressed against something warm.

For a brief, confused second, he thought he was dreaming.

Then he heard breathing.

Slow. Steady. Close.

Jun froze.

His eyes fluttered open.

Azael was still there.

Still sitting against the stone pillar, still wrapped in his dark coat, still very much real. His head rested slightly against the wall, silver eyes half-lidded, watching Jun like he hadn't looked away all night.

"You didn't leave," Jun whispered.

Azael tilted his head. "I told you I would return."

"No," Jun said, smiling sleepily. "I mean… you stayed."

Something soft flickered across Azael's face. "You fell asleep."

Jun flushed and pushed himself upright quickly. "S-sorry! I didn't mean to—"

"You were cold," Azael said simply. "So I remained."

Jun stared at him.

No one had ever stayed because Jun was cold.

"Oh," Jun murmured, heart thumping strangely. "Thank you."

Azael nodded, as if this was the most natural thing in the world.

Jun stretched, wincing slightly as bruises protested. Azael noticed immediately.

"Does it hurt?" he asked.

"A little," Jun admitted. "It's nothing new."

Azael frowned. The expression looked out of place on a face made for authority. "It should not be normal."

Jun laughed softly. "For people like me, it is."

Azael did not like that answer.

They spent the morning together.

Jun showed Azael where he washed his face using a cracked mirror and a bottle of water he kept hidden. Azael watched intently, fascinated by the mundane rituals of survival—how Jun rationed soap, how careful he was not to waste even a drop.

"You live like every small thing matters," Azael said.

Jun shrugged. "Because it does."

Later, Jun led him through narrow streets, past familiar corners where Jun was greeted with nods and cautious smiles. Some people noticed Azael immediately—his height, his presence, the way the air seemed to hush around him.

"Is he your brother?" an old shopkeeper asked Jun.

Jun hesitated, then glanced up at Azael. "Um… something like that."

Azael said nothing, but something warm curled in his chest at the word.

They shared street food—Jun insisted, even when Azael tried to refuse. He watched Jun eat, the way he savored each bite like a small victory, and found himself smiling without realizing it.

"What?" Jun asked, catching him.

"You are… alive," Azael said.

Jun blinked. "Aren't you?"

Azael did not answer.

As the day wore on, Azael felt it.

A pressure.

Subtle at first, like a distant hum beneath his thoughts. A disturbance in the divine order. His presence on Earth was being noticed.

Heaven was counting.

Azael stopped suddenly, hand reaching out to catch Jun by the wrist.

Jun stumbled back into him. "What's wrong?"

Azael's wings shuddered beneath his skin. "We are being watched."

Jun's smile faded. "By who?"

Azael looked up at the sky.

Jun followed his gaze—and shivered, though the sky looked normal.

"I don't see anything," Jun said.

"That does not mean they are not there."

Jun swallowed. "Are… are you in trouble because of me?"

The question hit harder than any blade.

Azael turned fully toward him. "You are not a burden."

Jun laughed weakly. "Everyone says that right before leaving."

"I am not everyone."

Jun looked at him for a long moment, searching his face like he was afraid of believing too much.

Then he nodded. "Okay."

Just like that.

The trust made Azael's chest ache.

That night, they returned beneath the bridge.

Jun spread out his thin blanket and hesitated. "You can sit… closer. If you want."

Azael did not hesitate this time.

They sat shoulder to shoulder. Jun leaned in gradually, testing boundaries. When Azael didn't pull away, Jun rested his head against Azael's arm.

"You know," Jun said softly, "when I was younger, I used to pray every night."

Azael stilled. "What did you pray for?"

Jun smiled sadly. "At first? For my parents to come back. Then for food. Then for the pain to stop."

"And now?"

Jun's voice dropped to a whisper. "Now I pray you don't disappear."

Azael closed his eyes.

He had never been prayed to directly before.

Jun yawned. "Can I ask you something?"

"Yes."

"Are you lonely?"

Azael opened his eyes.

"I was," he said honestly. "Before you."

Jun smiled and reached for Azael's hand.

This time, Azael did not flinch.

Their fingers intertwined naturally, like they had always known where to go. Jun's hand was warm, calloused, real.

Azael felt his wings stir violently, aching to unfurl.

"Your hand's shaking," Jun said.

"I am afraid," Azael admitted.

Jun squeezed his fingers gently. "Me too."

They stayed like that for a long time, listening to each other breathe.

Far above them, a ripple of golden light passed unseen.

A voice echoed through Heaven's halls.

"The archangel lingers."

Another voice answered.

"Then he must be tested."

Jun drifted to sleep first.

Azael stayed awake, watching over him, memorizing the curve of his lashes, the way his lips parted slightly when he breathed.

"I will protect you," Azael whispered, a vow not meant for mortal ears.

Above the city, unseen eyes opened.

Heaven had begun to whisper.

And soon—

It would speak aloud.
