Chapter 25: Death, The Enemy of Fate.

~~~ [START]
"You told a human about us," Edward said, head turned toward Troy, who halted behind him.
"What are you talking about?"
"I can read her mind!" Edward's voice hissed like a serpent. And Troy's eyes dulled for a moment too long, but after another, a curtain click dragged him to light; it all finally made sense.
Troy stepped back. "What?"
"She was thinking about me drinking blood!"
"You read her mind?" Troy's voice questioned, completely deaf to the words that followed after his claim. Then his hands clenched, and his eyes sharpened straight.
"You broke the rules!" Edward's voice also grew sharper. "Do you even know what they'll do to us?"
But Troy's gaze was locked elsewhere. It was still lowered below him, glaring right at the tiled floor, analyzing each grain of dirt under their feet.
"Edward." A voice interrupted them from behind; it was Bella.
Bella's eyes trailed to Troy when she approached them, and just as swiftly, they turned back to Edward.
And Edward's jaw softened from her scent, but his hands clenched beneath him.
"What are you—?"
"Alice told me to come get you," Bella interrupted him. And maybe that's when he saw it, perhaps that was the moment his eyes shifted to Troy's fists.
Because right there, right at the tips of Troy's fingers, was blood. Red, and endlessly falling downward. But with it also came a strange healing, which was constantly pulling it back and realigning his torn prints. And even then, the blood didn't smell inviting in the slightest; in fact, the scent was far more soothing than anything. It was as if smelling too much would grant the embrace of sleep.
"Troy? You're bleeding?" Bella noticed. Yet even then, Troy's eyes didn't lift toward them. A fake smile just embraced his lips, then he turned.
"Yeah, it's… I'll go to the nurse's," Troy said. His steps retreated . And perhaps for the first time in his life, his throat was quenched for blood.
Edward watched as Troy vanished into the distance, and much as he would predict, the calmness he felt from Troy's blood vanished with him.
"You saw it, right?" Bella whispered beside him, her hands gripping the base of his arm and pulling it closer, her head turned upward to his face. "His blood… it… it."
"You're imagining it." Edward turned to her. "Why'd Alice send you—"
"His blood was floating, Edward! I'm not stupid." Bella cut in, letting go of Edward's arm and walking back to the cafeteria.
Edward blinked at the silence, with his crystallized lungs, for the first time in years, feeling an ounce short of nonexistent breath.
Troy wasn't thinking anymore. Because usually, if Edward tried reading his thoughts, a sum of numbers would overwhelm him, but this time, the moment Honey's name exited his lips, those numbers completely vanished, and Troy thought of nothing.
Then, before the seconds could drain longer, he also started walking away. Moving past the hallway and entering the cafeteria.
Both Honey and Gina turned their eyes to him in wonder when he returned alone. But Edward didn't even acknowledge their glances; he just walked past them and sat in his seat. Edward's eyes then shifted to Alice, who was seated beside him, but unlike last time, she wasn't smiling or speaking. She was fixated on the food below her.
"He would have killed me again, wouldn't he?" Edward asked. And everyone beside him turned their eyes to Alice like a bullet. "Honey? She's the reason—"
"Edward." Alice's words interrupted him like a knife.
Edward leaned closer. "Would he?"
But the question stumbled when, on the other side, Troy stepped in, walking to his table, with his hand covered with a bandage. Then he sat down, not even daring to glance toward them, as he continued his laughs with Gina, Honey, and Tyler, who also walked in.
"Is that why you sent Bella to get me?" Edward almost continued.
RING!
But the bell silenced him.
The irony of fate, to silence him using that whose name held a spitting resemblance.
On the other side, Gina frowned at Tyler, who blew a kiss before walking away. Troy and Honey stood up next, laughing when another kid at the door tripped Tyler, causing him to stumble to the floor.
"Unc said your truck will be repaired by Friday," Gina said, turning to Troy. "And how the freak did you break the steering wheel? I'm pretty sure a brick wouldn't do that."
Honey laughed, grabbed Gina's hand, and retreated.
"And you'll pay for my gas!" Gina shouted before her exit. "I ain't driving you around for free!"
It was a funny remark, but the smile on Troy's face was an act; he was angry.
"Troy." Bella, who suddenly approached from behind him, said.
Troy's eyes instinctively drifted to Edward's table, and much as expected, everyone was staring.
Bella's eyes then trailed to his hand, or more specifically, the one with the bandage. "You got it covered?"
"Yeah, I…" Hesitation overtook Troy before he could answer, so he shook his head, then walked past her, leaving the door.
And when Bella turned back, she was met with the eyes of Jessica, who was glancing from the far back.
"He's mine," Jessica whispered, a clear indication for her to stay away.
{ELSEWHERE}
Atop a large mansion, seated in a room so high above it that it let sunlight seep through its windows, was Carlisle, who was fully immersed in the computer screen in front of him, browsing through the folders of the broken phone that was connected to it; the same phone they got from the now-dead Stan.
And although his skin continually sparkled from the sun, it didn't seem a bother.
But then Carlisle's eyes widened when he opened a file; it was a picture of Troy, who was unexpectedly draped in full Volturi clothing. And unlike one would expect, Troy had a smile on his face, something which was between fake and genuine.
And on the palm of his hand, frozen, with its eyes still widely open, was the head of a vampire.
Dead and unreactive.
