Chapter 186 - A Pulse That Refused to Die

"Gone? How? Why, how could this happen…?" His voice washed away into the sound of rain and sirens.

Inside the house, Kaivan knelt beside his mother. When the paramedics began placing her body into a black bag, he screamed and thrashed.

"What are you doing?! Don't cover her! She can't breathe!"

He grabbed one of the paramedic's hands.

"Mom… please… don't cover her! She's still alive! She's just sleeping…!" His shaking fingers held onto the white cloth wrapping around her.

Felicia burst through the police line. Seeing the scene, she froze. Kaivan, usually quiet, shy, now looked like a child who had lost the entire world. She rushed to him and embraced him tightly.

"Kaivan… enough… please calm down," she whispered, trying to steady his trembling body.

But Kaivan struggled in her arms.

"Let go, Felicia! I have to help Mom and Sis!" His voice was hoarse, his whole body shaking with sobs.

A police officer stepped closer, voice unsteady.

"Kid… your mother and sister are gone… We found your mother in a terrible state…" He lowered his head, unable to meet Kaivan's shattered gaze.

Felicia stiffened.

"Gone…?" she whispered, collapsing as tears streamed down her face. She held Kaivan tighter.

"Kaivan… I'm so sorry… I'm so, so sorry…"

Moments later, another car arrived. Livia stepped out with her father, both stunned by the scene of ambulances and police vehicles.

Her father hurried to the nearest officer.

"What happened? Are these children alright?" he asked, voice full of worry.

The officer let out a tense breath.

"Sir, are you their guardian? We need an adult to accompany them. They're too young to face this alone."

Livia's father looked toward Kaivan, who trembled in Felicia's embrace.

"Yes. I know him. I'll stay with them," he said firmly, placing a hand on the officer's shoulder.

Suddenly, a shout erupted from inside the house.

"Oxygen and the defibrillator! Now! She still has a pulse!"

A paramedic knelt beside Teh Kira.

"There's a weak heartbeat! Cover the head wound and move her to the hospital immediately!" he commanded.

Kaivan's breath stopped. With the last of his strength, he ran toward them.

"Teh Kira… please… wake up… Kaivan is here!" he cried, gripping her cold hand.

"Don't leave me… please… I have no one else left…"

The paramedics attached the oxygen tube, moving quickly to stabilize her condition. "We have to move! Get her to the ambulance!" the team leader shouted.

Felicia stood beside Kaivan, her eyes red. She held his blood-stained hand tightly. "Kaivan… let them help her. We'll follow to the hospital," she whispered, trying to sound calm even though her voice trembled.

Kaivan nodded weakly. Staggering on his feet, he followed the medics carrying his sister away. Felicia's arms around his back and the worried looks of their friends made the world around him feel frozen, silent, and painfully hollow.

That night, Hasan Sadikin Hospital was wrapped in tension. Rain kept pouring over Bandung, darkening the already somber night. In the cold, antiseptic-scented waiting room outside the operating theater, a group of teenagers sat in heavy silence. Radit, Frans, Zinnia, Isabel, Livia, and Felicia kept their eyes on the tightly shut door. The indicator light above it blinked softly, yet every blink struck their chests like a blow.

Kaivan sat at the far end of the room, apart from the others. His face was pale, his eyes empty as they stared at the floor. It felt like the world inside him was collapsing. The footsteps of nurses and the hum of medical machines blurred into distant echoes.

Soon, Raphael and Ethan arrived, breathless and anxious. Raphael immediately asked, "How is she?" His voice strained with worry.

Zinnia looked up, her eyes swollen. "Teh Kira is still in surgery," she said quietly. "All we can do is wait… and hope."

Raphael nodded, trying to stay strong. Prayer was all they had left. Ethan glanced at Kaivan, frozen in despair, then sat beside him and gently tapped his shoulder.
