"Finn Hawthorne!" Faye Vaughn's heart clenched as she watched him sink. Without a second thought, she stripped off her bulky coat, did a few seconds of warm-up stretches, and plunged into the river.
As expected, the winter river water was freezing. Faye Vaughn shivered the moment she entered.
She paddled forward and seized Finn Hawthorne's arm.
But he was still sinking.
"Are your feet tangled in the weeds?" Faye Vaughn didn't understand. The harder she pulled, the heavier he seemed to get, until he was about to drag her down with him.
To prevent them both from drowning, Faye Vaughn let him go.
She took a deep breath and dove underwater.
'If his feet are tangled in something, I won't have the strength to just pull him up. I have to dive down and see what it is.'
Saving him was all that mattered; Faye Vaughn didn't give it a second thought.
The river looked clear and shimmering, but it was actually quite murky.
