The local hospital was on the smaller side. Finn Hawthorne rushed around, finally managing to get Faye Vaughn settled into a private room.
She'd undergone various tests, but the results weren't back yet.
"I already gave her a fever reducer, so why isn't her fever going down?" Finn Hawthorne asked the nurse, his sharp features etched with anxiety.
The nurse comforted him, "Please try not to worry. Let's wait for the results for the doctor to review."
But it was hard for Finn Hawthorne not to worry.
It was his careless joke that had put Faye Vaughn in this state.
She lay on the hospital bed, her face an abnormal shade of red, her eyes shut tight. She hadn't regained consciousness at all.
Finn Hawthorne touched her forehead again. The heat was alarming.
"What's her temperature?" Finn Hawthorne asked the nurse for the umpteenth time.
"We just took it three minutes ago. 104 degrees," the nurse replied patiently.
His heart ached every time he heard the number.
