She knew it was safest to stay inside, but this was the fourth day with no news. Her patience was clearly wearing thin.
Liang Wan made up her mind and headed for the outer room. But just as she reached the door, it opened.

As usual, she didn't say another word, simply lowering her eyes obediently and leading her out.
The ornate eaves of the pavilion were veiled in the gossamer morning light, casting a pale golden halo over everything. Beneath the covered walkway, a few maids were sweeping, the SHUSH-SHUSH of their brooms making the courtyard's flowers and trees seem preternaturally still.
This was the first time Liang Wan had stepped out of the pavilion in all the days she had stayed here. 'I wonder how they've been searching for me outside,' she thought. 'Where is he taking me now?'
