On Little New Year's Day, Yuan Si and her mother made a table full of delicious food and even steamed a special pot of rice.
Ever since Yuan Si's trip to Su Country, the family had had plenty of white flour to eat. However, she hadn't bought much rice in Su Country, so it was only enough for an occasional treat.
"Little Si!" the old woman called out affectionately to her youngest daughter, who was burying her face in her bowl. Her eyes held both gratification and melancholy.

"The New Year is just around the corner," her mother began. "Our family is doing pretty well now, so I was thinking of visiting your two older sisters. What do you think?" The old woman now deferred to her youngest daughter on all matters. Since Yuan Si was the one who had brought their family this prosperity, she felt she had to ask for permission to give some things to her other two daughters.
