The young men behind him immediately stood up, flexing muscles that weren't really there.
The village chief's brow was furrowed so tightly you could have crushed a fly in it.
"Don't worry, Village Chief. Since you've entrusted this to me, I'll do my best."
Seeing the time of day, Drew Thorne said his goodbyes to the village chief.
"Stay for a meal!"
The village chief and his wife tried to get him to stay several times, but Drew Thorne declined.
"No, thank you. I should get home. I've been out for too long today."
A young man behind him grinned at the village chief and whispered.
"Cousin Drew has a girlfriend. He's just eager to get home and see her."
The village chief was surprised for a moment, then he chuckled and clapped Drew Thorne on the shoulder.
"How's your grandpa's health?"
Drew Thorne nodded.
"Grandpa's doing great. He was just talking about you. When he has time, I'll have him come over to play some chess and have tea with you."
