Chapter 16 - An Encounter with Ronan

Thalia's POV

"Where are we going?" I asked the lady that Kade had asked to accompany me.

"To the pack healer." She responded nonchalantly.

I couldn't help but pick up the boredom in her tone. She might not have wanted it to come out, but there was also some passive aggressiveness from just the way she didn't even bother to look at me.

As we walked towards the enormous castle that was the pack house, she didn't even bother to check if I was following her.

Her eyes were looking straight forward, and she couldn't give a damn about where I was.

My initial thought was to make a run for it.

But, where would I go?

It's not like I could just find a place to hide.

I was in the biggest pack of land, getting to the border would have probably taken me days.

And let's not be stupid. Kade would have his tracking wolves on me in no time.

Even as I glanced behind my shoulder, looking at the crowd that was in the distance, I could hear them celebrating.

"Great, just when I leave is right about the time when the party gets interesting." The maid mumbled under her breath.

I honestly don't think that she knew that she was loud enough for me to hear her, but since she didn't react or even look back, I guess she just brushed it off.

However, I noticed something in the distance.

Two men, guards that I had seen around Kade before.

If I were to take a guess, they had to be elite warriors who were tasked with always looking out after Kade.

But they weren't with him this time.

They were following us. I was certain about that.

'Kade really sent out his guards to make sure that I don't do anything stupid.' I said to myself.

But even as I thought about it some more, another realization struck me.

'Or perhaps he sent them to make sure that no one does anything stupid.'

Both made perfect sense.

And I guess that's why the maid couldn't give a damn about whether I was actually following her or not.

She must've known that Kade couldn't just send us to the pack healer without anyone watching over us.

However, just as I was about to walk through the doors to the castle, a familiar feeling of dread run down my spine.

I felt in in every fiber of my being, and it was a feeling that I could never forget, even if a hundred years were to pass.

I quickly snapped my head around and looked in the direction that led to the side of the pack house.

The lighting wasn't that great, but I couldn't help shake the feeling that something.....someone, was watching me.

Behind the shadow of one of the statues that surrounded the pack house, I was certain that someone was standing there.

"Are you going to stand there forever or why?" The maid asked me.

However, I couldn't care less about what she had asked me since I was more concerned with the overwhelming uneasiness that was coursing through my veins.

Turning my head back to where the two warriors had been, I could tell that they had picked up on something.

They had literally stopped in their tracks and were eyeing the shadows that I was looking at.

The distance between me and them was short...however, the distance between me and the shadows was shorter.

For a couple of seconds, I could tell that we were calculating the possibility of whether the guards could make it to where I was standing, before whatever was in the shadows made it to where I was standing.

However, I wasn't just taking a wild guess on who might have been standing in the shadows like some wild guessing game.

No. I knew for sure who was standing there.

And as he slowly walked out of the shadows and into the light, he just confirmed my assumptions.

Standing at over six feet tall, with broad shoulders and a face that was imbedded into my brain, it was none other than Alpha Ronan.

From my peripheral vision, I saw the guards take a step forward and then stop.

It was justified. They were confused as to whether Ronan was a threat or not.

On the other side where the maid stood, I heard a gasp of shock leaving her lips.

And before anything happened, I somehow wanted to understand why he would take such a risk to find me.

The guards were about to make their move when I raised my hand and signalled for them to stop.

I didn't expect them to heed to my signal, and they didn't.

They started walking towards us, and from the way they moved, I guessed that they were panicking.

I was still looking at Ronan, who didn't seem bothered by the fact that Kade's men were approaching him.

Not me.

They were moving towards him.

He was a threat according to them.

"Stop!" I ordered.

They stopped in their tracks for a second as I turned my attention to them.

This didn't last long as they were immediately on the move once again.

I could have used my assertive voice and tried to play the Luna card. But even I knew that my word couldn't overrule Kade's orders.

They weren't going to listen to my order and ignore their Alpha's.

And because of that, I had to use a different tactic.

"Stop..... please..." I pleaded with them, using a much softer tone with the hopes of trying to reach them.

I didn't expect it to happen, but they actually stopped.

"I'm sure he is on his way out of here." I added as I looked at Ronan.

As much as I would have wanted them to do whatever they had planned to do, I didn't feel like it was necessary.

I had had a long day, and with the run in with the elders, I wasn't ready for anymore commotion.

Especially since I could tell that whatever was going to happen, might result in bloodshed.

And I also wasn't sure that the two guards could go toe to toe with Alpha Ronan.

I would have given anything to watch him get into a fight, perhaps get injured or even worse, but no one knew him like I did.

He was the Alpha of the Shadowmoon Pack for a reason.

There was absolutely no way that such a man could be bested by only two men, regardless of how good they were.

They wouldn't stand a chance.

And to avoid all that, I figured that he hearing what he had to say was the best and fastest way to get him going without any drama.

I went down the stairs slowly and stood at the last two, just a few feet away from where Ronan stood.

The guards were alert, but I figure that they also saw no chance in beating Ronan, even if they would try to go after him at the same time.

"So this is what you want?" He asked me, looking at me like I had made the biggest mistake of my life.

"This is the life that you picked over me? With Alpha Kade?" He questioned, his voice getting higher, and harder to hide the anger and disgust that he had for me.

"I would do it again, as long as it meant getting away from you." I answered him, knowing that it would trigger him.

Ronan wasn't a man that took any kind of loss lightly.

"You really don't know what you've done. He is no better than me, if not worse." He lamented.

My brow went up in surprise as I stared at him in disbelief.

"Look at you, trying to tell me what's good and bad for me.

Of all the people, you are the last one that I expect to have a moral compass and trying to tell me what's right and wrong for me." I fired back at him.

Before he could say anything, I added, "For the first time since I've known you, you have admitted that you are a problem."

That was just me pulling at his nerves, and it was working like a charm.

He was really trying his best to hold it together, but that might have just been enough to send him over the edge.

"You're going to regret this Thalia! And when you come crawling back to me...."

"Enough with your self-absorbed bullshit. I'm never coming back to you. I'd rather die than to even think of coming back to that hell hole!" I snapped and cut him off.

His audacity to think that he had any kind of say and clue as to what was right and wrong for me is what set me off.

I couldn't believe just how much his ignorance to reality had made his head swell up.

"This is the last time that you're going to see me Ronan. You had enough time to give me hell.

And now, you've lost." I said to him with a smile.

If anything, those were going to be my last words to him, and I knew that they would burn deep.

And it's not as if I expected him not to want to have the final say.

I mean, it's Ronan we're talking about. I could read him like clockwork.

So, as I turned around and started walking up the stairs, leaving him where he stood, I wasn't surprised when he called out my name,

"Thalia..."

I paused, but didn't look back.

"Let's see how long this will last..... especially since you'll never get your wolf back."
