Chapter 46 - Chapter 46- The whisper in the mind

Night had draped the Red Moon Pack territory in silver light.

Modern streetlights reflected off sleek black roads and glass-fronted pack mansions. Even in a place so advanced, the forest edges still hummed with ancient power.

Hazel sat alone in the mansion's expansive living room.

The kitchen lights she had used earlier were off. Nick had left hours ago after helping her understand pack hierarchy and communication.

The bracelet Gloria had given her felt warm against her wrist. Comforting. Safe.

She closed her eyes briefly, exhaling slowly.

Then the air shifted.

A chill, almost imperceptible, crawled along her spine.

Her eyes snapped open.

Her instincts screamed: someone—or something—was inside her mind.

A voice slithered inside her thoughts.

"Eclipse heir…"

Hazel froze.

Not in fear. In awareness.

She knew this.

The Devourer.

"You are learning to stand in wolf territory," the voice continued.

Hazel's fingers tightened slightly against the armrest. She refused to answer, refused to show the unease that the creature wanted to see.

"You are brave."

A pause. Then a whisper.

"Do you know why I have not attacked yet?"

Hazel's chest tightened. Show yourself, she demanded silently.

"Because breaking a Blood Alpha is far more satisfying when done slowly," it hissed.

Somewhere inside the mansion, Ryan's presence shifted.

Venom stirred. Blade hummed faintly. Ralph growled lowly, unseen but alert.

Ryan did not move. Not yet.

Psychological warfare required patience.

Hazel's voice echoed in her mind: You are afraid of me.

A cold, sinister laugh answered.

"Interesting answer… tell me, heir… do you trust the Alpha demon wolf?"

Hazel's jaw clenched. She did not respond.

"Or do you find yourself feeling… something else whenever he watches you?"

Hazel's fingers twitched slightly, but she maintained her control. Calm. Calm. Control.

"Mate bonds are dangerous when built on secrets," the Devourer whispered.

Then silence.

Outside the mansion, a soft wind rustled through manicured trees. The distant city lights glimmered normally, but the weight of the mental intrusion lingered.

Inside, Ryan emerged from the shadows of the staircase, calm yet tense. He had felt the intrusion the instant it began.

Hazel turned slightly but did not meet his eyes.

"He… spoke to me," she murmured.

"Yes," Ryan said quietly, his voice low, controlled.

Hazel's gaze drifted toward the balcony windows. "He's afraid of something."

"Yes," Ryan confirmed.

Hazel's fingers tightened around the edge of the sofa. "Of what?"

Ryan's dark eyes softened slightly. "Of you… awakening fully."

Hazel's heartbeat quickened. "I don't want to be a monster."

"You are not," Ryan said, stepping closer—but still giving her space.

Hazel swallowed, unsure whether she believed him.

The weight of the Devourer's warning pressed on her mind, but so did something else—something warmer, fiercer, unspoken.

Ryan's aura pulsed subtly in the room, controlled yet undeniable. Hazel's chest felt tight, caught between fear and something she wasn't ready to name.

And somewhere outside, in the shadows of the Red Moon territory, unseen eyes watched.

The psychological game had begun.
