Laila turned to see who had entered the room. Her eyes widened when she saw Luke standing there with a blank expression.
"Still crying?" he asked, closing the door behind him.
Laila sat with her knees drawn up, her eyes red and swollen from all the tears she had shed earlier with her mother.
"Do you need something?" she asked, trying to sound grumpy, but her voice came out soft and adorable after all the weeping.
"Nothing. I just came to check on you," Luke said. He walked over and sat on the other side of the bed, leaning against the wall.
A brief silence settled over the room.
Laila stared straight ahead. Every thought from earlier rushed back—the way Caleb had looked at her, the words she had spoken… everything.
Then, in a quiet voice, she muttered, "You must think I'm a greedy woman who would leave her mate just for a comfortable life, right?"
"Oh, yes. That's true," Luke confirmed without hesitation, startling her.
