Chapter 4 - The eyes in the Shadows

The dungeon corridors stretched endlessly, lit by faint crystals embedded in the walls. Fenrik Hayashi's boots echoed softly as he stepped forward, the Wolf Slayer Axe resting comfortably in his hands. Every instinct was alert, every sense focused. He could feel the weight of the air, the subtle shifts of pressure around him.

It wasn't the usual tension of minor dungeon enemies. No, this was something else. Watching. Waiting.

A faint movement at the edge of his vision made him halt. Shadows flickered, but there was no sound—no shuffle, no breathing, only awareness. Fenrik tightened his grip on the axe, letting the silence sharpen his mind.

Then, almost imperceptibly, figures stepped from the darkness. Four of them, moving with calm precision, stopping a few meters ahead.

Fenrik's eyes narrowed. He didn't recognize them—but he felt their skill.

The one in front crossed his arms and smiled faintly. "Names first," he said simply.

"I'm Rin," the figure added, stepping forward.

To the left, a tall figure inclined his head. "Kaito."

A woman with piercing eyes gave a slight nod. "Yuna."

The last, silent and watchful, said nothing at first, then finally: "Seiji."

Fenrik didn't lower his weapon. "You're not dungeon monsters," he said. "Nor are you trapped humans."

Rin's smile widened. "Observant. Good instincts."

Kaito stepped closer, arms relaxed. "We're here to see something. Nothing more."

Yuna's voice was calm. "A test. That's all."

Seiji's gaze never wavered. "If you pass, you'll be left standing."

Fenrik exhaled slowly. He understood. They were here to measure him—not to destroy, not to warn, only to observe.

The first strike came without warning. Rin lunged lightly, forcing Fenrik to adjust. His axe moved instinctively, parrying just enough to keep the pressure. Kaito attacked next, slower, measuring Fenrik's timing and precision. Yuna circled, precise, fast, forcing him to move in ways he hadn't yet anticipated. Seiji's approach was subtle but relentless, testing his ability to maintain balance under pressure.

Each strike wasn't meant to harm. Each clash was a question, and Fenrik answered with instinct and focus.

He felt the Wolf Slayer Axe respond under his hands, a quiet hum of anticipation. Not power, not awakening—just recognition.

A small grin tugged at Rin's lips. "Impressive," he said. "He adapts quickly."

Kaito nodded, eyes narrowing slightly. "Strong enough to survive beyond beginner trials."

Yuna tilted her head. "Not complete… but real."

Seiji finally stepped back. "Enough for now."

The four exchanged quick glances, silent understanding passing between them. Then, as if swallowed by the shadows themselves, they retreated—quietly, gracefully, leaving Fenrik alone with his thoughts.

Fenrik lowered his axe, heart still pounding. "They came to test me… and now they're gone," he muttered.

A faint wind stirred the corridor, whispering across the stones. Fenrik's eyes flicked upward, sensing something deeper, watching. He didn't know who had sent the observers, nor why, but he felt a strange mix of relief and unease.

"They're impressed," he said quietly, almost to himself. "But… why?"

Somewhere further in the dungeon, a presence shifted. Hidden, silent, yet unmistakably aware of him. Fenrik didn't see it. He wouldn't know it until later. But for now, he had passed the first measure of judgment—not through strength alone, but through instinct, control, and will.

And for the first time since entering this world, Fenrik felt a quiet surge of determination.

The dungeon was still. The air pressed heavy. Shadows shifted.

And the quiet was not peace. It was a promise.

A promise that Fenrik's path, however uncertain, was only beginning.
