Chapter 96 - Names Pulled From Water

No one gave a speech.

There was no time for it.

And if there had been, I think all of us would have hated it.

The archive war turned, almost instantly, from defense to salvage.

The black pulp water in the sub-basement was no longer feeding the wheel, but it was still doing what water and time always do to paper:

breaking memory down into something harder to hold.

By the time Lily and the first relay crews arrived, the old census vault no longer looked like a room.

It looked like a disaster site.

Which, functionally, it was.

The water sat knee-deep and thick with fibers.

White slurries of dissolved entries clung to pillars and corners.

Pages half-softened floated by, names lifting out of them and then fading again if no one caught them in time.
