Chapter 1 - CHAPTER 1 — THE HOUSE ON BRIAR LANE

The house on Briar Lane had been empty for sixteen years.

It stood at the far edge of the town of Marrowick, where the road cracked into weeds and the streetlights stopped caring. People passed it without looking, but everyone knew its story. A pastor had lived there once with his family. Neighbors remembered hymns drifting through the windows at night, gentle and warm. Then one night, the hymns grew louder. Not joyful—desperate. By morning, the house was silent. No one ever saw the family again.

There were no bodies.

Only overturned crosses and doors left open as if something had walked out wearing their voices.

When Evelyn Carter, a Christian counselor specializing in spiritual recovery, bought the house, even the realtor hesitated handing over the keys.

"Some homes keep prayers," the old man said quietly. "And some choke on them."

Evelyn smiled politely. She believed in restoration, not fear. To her, faith meant light entering darkness, not running from it.

The first evening she moved in, rain whispered against the roof. She unpacked her Bible, journal, and silver cross. The house smelled of dust and something older—like cold candle wax mixed with soil.

At exactly 3:11 a.m., Evelyn woke suddenly.

Not from sound.

From awareness.

Her bedroom felt watched.

She sat up. Moonlight spilled across the wall. Her wooden cross hung there—

—upside down.

Not fallen.

Turned.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

The air shifted.

And the house exhaled.
