He walked down the dark alley, only the moonlight giving some illumination to the darkness. He was Jay Smith, a Null—this label was given to anyone who was not able to awaken a talent. Those with powerful talents are the ones able to rule this world.
Talents alone are not what make one powerful; it is a person's proficiency in using their said talent. Proficiency is graded from Tier One to Ten. The highest humanity has produced is Tier Nine; Tier Ten is a myth. This has been the case since the Void opened up, letting countless monsters pass through.
Awakened humans make their way into the Void breaches to seal them, and the only way to do so is to defeat the Void Boss. These breaches also have levels, graded from One to Ten. The highest to ever be closed was a Tier Eight gate, which led to the majority of Europe being wiped out before it was contained. It took another fifty years before it could be closed.
The man who spearheaded this expedition was the leader of the Earth Faction, the largest faction in the world. They are the new government after the Void breaches; the old world governments failed, which led to anarchy. Now they represent order on the current Earth.
There are other factions, like the Red Cross and the Bloodhounds, which form the Big Three. Other factions are either subordinates or are sponsored by these factions.
It has been three hundred years since the first Void gate opened, and the world has changed as much as one would expect. Power means everything. Though the Big Three try to bring normalcy back, they could not stop the prejudice against Nulls. In some places, they are seen as bad luck.
Unfortunately, Jay lives in such a place.
