Chapter 10 - chapter Ten

Minsoo stepped toward him slowly, as though any sudden movement might shatter the fragile moment between them. Tears rested in the corners of his eyes, silent evidence of a pain too deep for words. With gentle care, she lifted her hand and wiped them away, her touch soft and trembling against his skin. Without speaking, she wrapped her arms around him and held him close, offering warmth where sorrow had taken root.

For a long moment, neither of them moved. The world outside faded into quiet distance, leaving only the faint sound of breathing and the steady rhythm of two wounded hearts learning the language of comfort. In that stillness, time itself felt suspended, as if even fate was waiting to see what choice love would make.

"I am so broken… my heart is hurting," he whispered, his voice unsteady against her shoulder.

Minsoo did not trust herself to answer. Words felt too small for what she felt, too fragile to carry the truth hidden inside her chest. Instead, she slowly patted his back, each gentle movement a promise of presence, patience, and care. Her silence spoke more tenderly than any confession.

Gradually, the tension left his body. Exhaustion, both emotional and physical, settled over him like falling snow. Still holding her, he drifted into sleep, his breathing soft and even, like a child who had finally found safety after wandering too long in darkness.

Minsoo remained there, unmoving, listening to the quiet rise and fall of his breath. A deep sadness spread through her heart, heavy and unavoidable. She wondered when comfort had become something dangerous, when kindness had begun to feel like love.

Carefully, so she would not wake him, she slipped from his embrace and stepped away. For a brief moment, she looked back at him, her eyes filled with emotions she could not name. Then she turned and left the room in silence.

That evening, the palace corridors glowed beneath the fading colors of sunset. Golden light stretched across polished floors, painting long shadows that seemed to follow her wherever she walked. Each step felt heavier than the last, burdened by thoughts of two worlds pulling her in opposite directions.

Soon, she encountered Insu.

A small spark of hope appeared in her eyes.

"Have you seen the book I told you about?" she asked softly, almost afraid of the answer.

Insu's expression turned apologetic as he shook his head. "No. I searched carefully, but I found nothing that matches your description."

Disappointment passed across her face like a quiet cloud covering sunlight. She lowered her gaze, hiding the ache she felt growing stronger each day the book remained missing.

Before either of them could speak again, the king appeared at the far end of the corridor. His eyes settled on the two of them standing together, speaking in low voices. Something unfamiliar stirred within him, subtle yet sharp enough to tighten his chest.

Jealousy.

He called Insu aside and asked what they had been discussing. When Insu explained it was about Minsoo's missing book, urgency replaced the king's calm expression. Without hesitation, he ordered the guards to summon her to his chamber.

When Minsoo entered, the atmosphere felt heavy with unspoken emotion. The air itself seemed aware that something important was about to change.

He looked at her for a long time before speaking.

"Why do you need this book so desperately?" he asked quietly.

She hesitated only briefly. Then she chose honesty, even though truth felt like a blade that might wound them both.

"It is a magic book," she said. "It brought me into this world. And I need it… to return home."

Silence followed, deep and suffocating.

The king felt as though the ground beneath him had vanished. "Are you willing to leave me here alone and go?" he asked, his voice barely holding together.

"Yes," Minsoo answered, though the word weighed heavily on her heart. "That is why you must keep your promise and help me find it."

Pain moved across his face, raw and unguarded. "Even with the feelings I have for you, you would still leave everything behind?"

Minsoo could not answer. Her silence became the truth neither of them wanted to face.

Fear surged inside him, powerful and uncontrollable. "I love you," he cried. "Please… do not do this to me."

The confession broke through the walls she had tried to keep strong. Emotion flooded her chest, warm and frightening at the same time.

"Even if I return to my world," she whispered, "I promise I will come back to you."

Tears filled his eyes. Slowly, gently, he placed his hands around her waist and drew her closer, as if afraid she might disappear between one heartbeat and the next.

"And even if you do not return," he said softly, "I will find a way to your world, because I cannot live without you."

Minsoo froze, overwhelmed by feeling. She lifted her hands toward his face, uncertain, caught between fear and longing. He saw the doubt in her eyes and brushed her hair back tenderly, his fingers resting lightly near her neck.

Their eyes remained locked together. The silence between them felt sacred, filled with everything they could not say aloud.

Then, slowly, he kissed her.

The kiss was gentle yet deep with emotion, carrying confession, promise, and fragile hope. Time seemed to pause, allowing only the quiet truth of their hearts to exist.

When they finally parted, neither moved for a moment.

He walked her to her room in silence. At the doorway, he pressed a soft kiss to her forehead. "Goodnight, Minsoo," he whispered.

By then, Insu already understood. The king had fallen completely in love.

When the king returned, Insu teased him without mercy, calling him a lover boy until he reached his chamber. Each time Minsoo's name was mentioned, a faint blush warmed the king's face, revealing happiness he could no longer hide.

The next morning, whispers spread through the palace like wildfire. Servants murmured behind careful smiles. Guards exchanged knowing glances. Rumor grew into certainty.

The king had kissed Minsoo.

And somehow, the news reached Miya.

Cold anger filled her heart. That very night, she secretly summoned the king's uncle to her chambers. When he arrived, she spoke without hesitation.

"We must get rid of Minsoo quickly. If we wait any longer, I will lose my chance to become queen."

He told her to be patient, that a plan was already forming and would soon be revealed. Beneath his calm voice, darker ambition waited.

He stepped closer and pulled her toward him. Miya did not resist. She already understood the silent bond between them, built not on love but on shared desire for power.

"You want something," she murmured.

A slow smile answered her.

Candlelight flickered as shadows moved across the walls, and the world outside disappeared into silence. What passed between them was not tenderness but ambition wrapped in secrecy, two hearts joined by hunger for a throne.

Beyond the closed doors, unseen eyes had already noticed. Her loyal court lady knew the hidden truth.

Miya had never loved the king. The throne was all she desired.

And the only man she willingly trusted was the king's uncle.

Together, they were planning something far more dangerous than betrayal.

They were planning to take the throne.

Far away in her quiet chamber, unaware of the storm gathering around her, Minsoo stood beside the window and looked at the night sky. Stars shimmered like distant memories, reminding her of a world she might soon return to.

Yet her heart no longer belonged to only one world.

It was divided.

And somewhere deep inside, she feared that whichever path she chose would break her forever.

Sleep did not come easily that night. Every time Minsoo closed her eyes, she felt again the warmth of his embrace and heard the fragile honesty in his voice. Love, once distant and impossible, now stood directly before her, asking for an answer she did not know how to give.

She wondered whether destiny could truly belong to two worlds at once, or whether every miracle demanded a sacrifice.

Across the palace, the king remained awake as well. Papers lay untouched before him, their contents meaningless compared to the storm inside his heart. For the first time in his life, power felt small. Authority felt empty. None of it mattered if she disappeared.

He walked slowly to the balcony and looked toward the same sky Minsoo watched. Though distance separated them, the silence between their hearts felt shared.

"I will not lose you," he whispered into the night, as if the stars themselves might carry his promise to her.

Days passed, yet tension quietly grew within the palace walls. Servants spoke more carefully. Guards watched more closely. Beneath ordinary routine, invisible threads of conspiracy tightened.

The king's uncle moved with patience, meeting loyal supporters in secret corridors and shadowed gardens. Every conversation sounded harmless to listening ears, yet each word carefully built the foundation of betrayal.

Miya, meanwhile, perfected her mask of innocence. Before others, she appeared gentle and obedient. Alone, her eyes reflected only ambition. She believed the throne was not something to be earned, but something to be taken.

One evening, her court lady gathered the courage to speak.

"My lady… this path is dangerous," she whispered. "If the truth is discovered—"

"It will not be discovered," Miya replied calmly. "And when I become queen, loyalty will be rewarded."

The warning faded into silence. Fear, once spoken, could not survive where ambition ruled.

Unaware of the depth of danger surrounding her, Minsoo continued searching for the missing book. Each failure tightened the knot of uncertainty in her chest. Returning home had once been her only wish. Now, the thought of leaving felt like tearing her own heart in two.

Insu watched her growing sadness with quiet concern. Though he said little, he began searching more urgently than before, determined to find any clue that might help her.

Because even he could see the truth.

If the book appeared, everything would change.

And if it did not, the palace itself might become the place where love and tragedy met.

One afternoon, as Minsoo walked through the royal garden, a strange feeling passed through her, brief yet unmistakable. The air seemed to shimmer, as though something unseen had stirred.

She turned quickly, but nothing was there.

Still, her heart began to race.

Somewhere, somehow, destiny was moving again.

And whether it would lead her home… or deeper into this world of love, power, and danger…

no one yet knew.

That night, clouds slowly covered the stars, hiding their light from the earth below. The darkness felt like a warning whispered by fate itself.

Within his chamber, the king finally allowed exhaustion to pull him into uneasy sleep, yet even in dreams he searched for her, afraid that morning might take her away.

Minsoo, too, lay awake until the quiet hours before dawn. When sleep finally came, it carried no rest, only questions waiting for answers the future had not yet revealed.

Beyond them both, hidden hands continued shaping events that would soon change everything.

Love was growing.

So was danger.

And the moment when the two would collide was drawing closer with every passing breath.

In the silence before sunrise, the palace held its breath, balanced between hope and ruin. No voice announced what was coming, yet destiny was already on its way, quiet and unstoppable.

Soon, hearts would be tested, loyalties would break, and truths long hidden would rise into the light.

And when that moment arrived, none of them would remain the same.

For now, only the fragile promise of love remained, glowing softly against the gathering shadows. Whether that light would guide them toward happiness or sorrow was a question the coming days would answer.

Until then, the night kept its secrets, and the story continued to unfold, one heartbeat at a time.

Very soon now.
