"The hardest battles aren't fought with swords or claws—they're fought in the space between heartbeats."OPENING SCENE - TRAINING GROUNDS (Dawn)
Day 3 at the Valdric Estate
5:47 AM
Elena had never been a morning person.
In her normal life—past life, her mind corrected—she'd hit the snooze button at least three times before dragging herself out of bed. She'd stumble to school with coffee-stained shirts and homework finished in homeroom.
But that girl was dead.
The girl standing in the Valdric estate's training grounds at dawn, wearing borrowed athletic gear and facing two supernatural predators, was someone else entirely.
Someone who bled roses and conjured fire.
Someone whose very existence could start or end a war.
Someone who was currently getting her ass kicked.
"Again," Damien commanded, not even breathing hard despite having just thrown her across the mat for the eighth time.
Elena groaned from her position on the ground. "Can we maybe take a break? I'm pretty sure I've broken ribs. Multiple ribs. Possibly all of them."
"Your ribs are fine," Kael said from where he leaned against the wall, arms crossed, watching with barely concealed amusement. "You heal faster now. One of the perks of being... whatever you are."
"Gee, thanks for the pep talk, wolf boy."
Kael grinned. "I thought we agreed on using actual names."
"That was before you let him throw me around like a rag doll for the past hour."
"It's been twenty minutes," Damien corrected, offering her a hand up. "And if I was actually trying to hurt you, you'd know it."
Elena took his hand, ignoring the way her skin tingled at the contact. His grip was firm but gentle, pulling her up effortlessly. She noticed things like that now—how controlled his strength was, how careful he was with her despite being capable of crushing stone with his bare hands.
"Your stance is wrong," he said, moving behind her. "Here."
His hands settled on her hips, adjusting her position. Elena's breath caught. He was close—too close. She could smell him, that unique mixture of sandalwood and something darker, older. Dangerous.
"Feet wider," he murmured near her ear. "Center of gravity lower."
His hands slid to her arms, positioning them.
"Like this?" she asked, her voice coming out breathier than intended.
"Perfect," he said softly, and she wasn't entirely sure he was talking about her stance.
A growl from across the room made them both freeze.
Kael had pushed off from the wall, his golden eyes flashing with barely controlled anger. "If you're done groping her, maybe we could get back to actual training."
Damien stepped back slowly, deliberately. "Jealousy doesn't suit you, wolf."
"Neither does taking advantage suit you, parasite."
"ENOUGH!"
Both men turned to stare at Elena, who had literal flames dancing around her clenched fists.
"This," she said, gesturing between them with fire-wreathed hands, "this is exactly what we talked about. No fighting. No jealousy. We work together or not at all."
The flames grew higher.
"Elena," Damien said carefully, "you need to calm down."
"Don't tell me to calm down!"
The fire spread up her arms.
"Elena," Kael said, moving closer despite the heat, "your eyes are glowing."
"What?"
He pulled out his phone, turning on the camera and flipping it to face her.
Elena gasped.
Her eyes weren't just glowing—they were shifting colors. Silver to gold to red and back again, like a kaleidoscope of supernatural power.
And behind her, spreading from her shoulders like wings made of light, were shadows that shouldn't exist—dark on one side, bright on the other.
"What's happening to me?"
"You're manifesting," a new voice said from the doorway.
They all turned.
A woman stood there—tall, elegant, with dark skin and silver hair that fell to her waist. Her eyes were ancient, older than Damien's, holding knowledge of centuries.
"Selene," Damien said with surprising respect. "I didn't know you were coming."
"The Council sent me," she replied, entering the room. The very air seemed to shift around her, recognizing power. "When they heard about the Blood Rose finally revealing herself, they insisted on proper instruction."
"And you are?" Elena asked, the flames slowly dying down as curiosity replaced anger.
"Selene Nightshade. Witch. Keeper of the Ancient Prophecies. And, as of now, your teacher."
She circled Elena slowly, examining her like a specimen.
"Fascinating," she murmured. "The blood signature is unlike anything I've seen. Vampire, werewolf, human, and... something else. Something older."
"Older than vampires and werewolves?" Kael asked skeptically.
Selene's lips curved in a mysterious smile. "Oh, young alpha. You think your species are the oldest? How charmingly naive. There were things walking this earth before the first vampire was turned, before the first wolf howled at the moon."
"What kind of things?" Elena asked.
"The kind we pray never wake up," Selene replied. "But that's a lesson for another day. Today, we focus on control. You nearly set the training room on fire because of emotional distress. What happens when you're in public? When you're around humans?"
Elena paled. "I could hurt someone."
"You could kill everyone in a three-block radius if you have a bad enough day," Selene said bluntly. "Power like yours doesn't come with an off switch. It's always there, always waiting to explode."
"So what do I do?"
"You learn. You train. You master yourself before your power masters you." Selene waved her hand, and suddenly the training room transformed. The mats disappeared, replaced by symbols drawn in light on the floor. Candles appeared in a circle, floating in mid-air. "We begin with meditation."
"Meditation?" Elena said doubtfully. "I was kind of expecting something more... magical."
"Child, meditation IS magical. It's the foundation of all control. Sit."
Elena sat in the center of the circle.
"You two," Selene said, looking at Damien and Kael. "Out."
"We're not leaving her," Damien said flatly.
"She's not safe alone," Kael agreed.
Selene laughed—a sound like wind chimes in a storm. "She's with me. She's safer than she's ever been. Besides, your presence is... distracting her. I can feel her energy pulling toward both of you. It's interfering with the lesson."
Both men looked at Elena.
"It's okay," she said, though part of her didn't want them to go. Their presence, despite the tension, had become comforting. "I'll be fine."
They left reluctantly, shooting each other warning glares as they went.
When they were gone, Selene sat across from Elena.
"Now," she said, "tell me about the dreams."
"How did you—"
"I'm a witch, child. I know things. The dreams started three months ago, yes? Always with blood, always with eyes watching you?"
Elena nodded.
"Those weren't dreams. They were memories."
"Whose memories?"
"Your mother's."
Elena's heart stopped. "My birth mother?"
"Yes. She was... remarkable. I knew her, briefly, before she disappeared. Before you were hidden."
"You knew her? What was she like? What was her name? Why did she—"
"So many questions," Selene interrupted gently. "And I have so few answers. Your mother was careful. She erased herself from existence to protect you. But the dreams... traumatic memories sometimes pass through blood, especially blood as powerful as yours."
"So she experienced what I've been dreaming?"
"Most likely her final days. Before she hid you. Before she and your father made the ultimate sacrifice."
"They're dead?"
Selene hesitated. "That's... complicated."
"Everything about my life is complicated!"
The candles flared higher.
"Control," Selene said firmly. "Emotion is power, but uncontrolled emotion is destruction. Close your eyes."
Elena obeyed.
"Breathe. In through the nose, out through the mouth. Feel your heartbeat. Feel the blood in your veins."
Elena breathed.
"Now, deeper. Feel beyond your body. Feel the energy around you. The life force of every living thing."
At first, Elena felt nothing.
Then—
Oh.
It was like opening eyes she didn't know were closed. She could feel everything. Selene's ancient power, thrumming like a deep bass note. Damien somewhere in the house, cold and controlled but with an undercurrent of worry. Kael, pacing outside, his energy wild and warm.
And beyond them—
Mia, still asleep in her guest room, dreaming of normal things.
The forest, teeming with life.
The town in the distance, thousands of heartbeats.
And something else.
Something watching.
Something wrong.
Elena's eyes snapped open. "There's something out there."
Selene nodded grimly. "You feel it too. It's been circling the estate for days, testing the boundaries."
"What is it?"
"We don't know. It's shielded, hidden. But it's old. And it's focused on you."
"Should we—"
"No. It can't enter. The wards are too strong. But Elena..." Selene leaned forward. "This is why you need to learn control. Things are coming. Dark things. Ancient things. Things that have waited centuries for you to reveal yourself."
"Why? What did I do?"
"It's not what you did. It's what you are. What you represent. The prophecy isn't just about uniting vampires and werewolves. It's about something bigger. Something that was broken long ago that only you can fix."
"Or destroy."
"Yes. Or destroy."
They sat in silence for a moment.
"I'm scared," Elena admitted quietly.
"Good," Selene said. "Fear keeps you careful. Fear keeps you alive. But don't let it control you." She stood. "That's enough for today. We'll continue tomorrow."
"That's it?"
"You opened your supernatural senses for the first time and didn't explode anything. That's progress." Selene headed for the door, then paused. "A word of advice?"
"Yeah?"
"The two boys—men—whatever you want to call them. They both love you. Genuinely, desperately, completely. That kind of love is rare. Don't throw it away lightly."
"I have to choose one."
"Do you? Who made that rule?"
Elena blinked. "But... they hate each other."
"They think they do. But I watched them today. They work well together. They balance each other. And they both balance you." Selene smiled mysteriously. "The prophecy speaks of unity, child. Perhaps it means more than just species coming together."
She left before Elena could ask what she meant.
SCENE 2 - THE GARDEN (Afternoon)
Elena found Mia in the garden, sprawled on a bench with a book, looking surprisingly at peace for someone whose life had just been turned upside down.
"Hey," Elena said, sitting beside her best friend.
"Hey yourself, fire hands." Mia closed the book—a vampire romance novel, Elena noticed with amusement. "How was training?"
"Painful. Confusing. Apparently I have supernatural senses now."
"Cool. Can you read minds?"
"No."
"Lame."
They sat in comfortable silence for a moment.
"Are you okay?" Elena asked. "Really okay? Not just pretending-everything-is-fine okay?"
Mia sighed. "Honestly? I don't know. Three days ago, my biggest worry was passing calculus. Now I know vampires and werewolves exist, my best friend is some prophesied chosen one, and I'm living in a vampire mansion because it's too dangerous to go home."
"I'm sorry. This is all my fault—"
"Stop." Mia turned to face her. "This isn't your fault. You didn't ask to be... whatever you are. You didn't ask for any of this."
"But you're in danger because of me."
"I'm alive because of you. Because of them." Mia nodded toward the house. "Do you know what Damien did? When those rogues took me?"
Elena shook her head.
"He tore them apart. Literally. I watched him rip a vampire's head off with his bare hands because it touched me. Because I was your friend and that made me important to him."
"He did that?"
"And Kael—his pack has been watching my family. My annoying little brother. My parents. Making sure they're safe. They don't even know me, but they're protecting my entire family because I matter to you."
Elena felt tears prick her eyes. "They're good men."
"Men? Elena, they're not men. They're forces of nature. And they're both completely, ridiculously, obsessively in love with you."
"It's not love. It's the prophecy, the mate bond—"
"Bullshit." Mia rarely cursed, so when she did, Elena paid attention. "I see how they look at you. How they look at each other when they think no one's watching."
"They hate each other."
"Do they? Or do they hate that they both want the same thing?" Mia picked a flower from the garden—a red rose. "You know what I think?"
"What?"
"I think they're more alike than they want to admit. Both leaders. Both protective. Both walking around with centuries of loneliness—"
"Kael's only twenty-three."
"In human years. But werewolves mature faster, right? He became Alpha at eighteen. That's five years of carrying an entire pack on his shoulders. That ages a person."
She had a point.
"So what do I do?"
"You follow your heart."
"My heart wants both of them."
Mia shrugged. "Then have both."
"Mia!"
"What? It's the twenty-first century. Polyamory is a thing. And you're literally a magical being who shouldn't exist. Maybe normal rules don't apply to you."
Before Elena could respond, a scream pierced the air.
Both girls jumped up.
"That came from the house," Elena said, already running.
They burst through the back door to find chaos.
Kael was on the ground, convulsing, his body shifting between human and wolf uncontrollably. Bones cracked and reformed. Fur sprouted and receded. His eyes flickered between gold and human brown.
"What's happening?" Elena dropped to her knees beside him.
"Poison," Damien said grimly, holding Kael's shoulders to keep him from hurting himself. "Wolfsbane, but modified. Someone's been experimenting."
"Who?"
"Does it matter right now? We need to help him!"
Selene appeared, her face grave. "Move aside."
She knelt beside Kael, her hands glowing with silver light as she passed them over his body.
"The poison is aggressive," she said. "It's attacking his ability to shift, trapping him between forms. If we can't stop it..."
"What?" Elena demanded.
"He'll be stuck. Neither human nor wolf. The pain will drive him insane, and eventually..." She didn't finish.
"No." Elena's hands burst into flames. "No, there has to be something—"
"Your blood," Damien said suddenly. "Your blood heals. We saw it with the roses."
"That's dangerous," Selene warned. "We don't know how her blood will interact with werewolf physiology."
"We have to try," Elena said, already looking for something sharp.
Damien's fangs extended. "Allow me."
He took her wrist gently, his eyes asking permission.
Elena nodded.
His fangs pierced her skin—a sharp pain followed by an odd numbness. Blood welled up, darker than normal blood, with an almost luminescent quality.
"Kael," Elena said, lifting his head. "You need to drink."
Even in his agony, his wolf rebelled at the idea of drinking blood—a vampire act.
"Please," Elena whispered. "I can't lose you. Not when I just found you."
His eyes met hers, gold and brown swirling together.
He drank.
The effect was immediate.
His convulsions stopped. His body solidified into human form. The gray pallor of his skin faded back to healthy tan.
But something else happened too.
A bond snapped into place.
Elena gasped, feeling it like a physical thread connecting her to Kael. She could feel his emotions—relief, pain, and overwhelming love.
"What did you do?" Selene breathed.
"I saved him," Elena said.
"You blood-bonded him. That's... that's a vampire ritual."
Everyone turned to stare at Damien, who had gone very still.
"She shared her blood with him," he said quietly. "Created a connection. It's not a full vampire bond, but..."
"But what?" Elena asked.
"But it's permanent. You're connected now. Forever."
Kael sat up slowly, his eyes fixed on Elena with an intensity that made her shiver.
"I can feel you," he said wonderingly. "In my mind. In my soul."
"I can feel you too."
Damien stood abruptly and walked out.
Elena started to follow, but Selene stopped her. "Let him go. He needs time to process."
"Process what?"
"You just gave the werewolf what every vampire dreams of—a blood bond with the person they love. It's intimate in ways you can't imagine."
"But I had to save him—"
"And you did. But actions have consequences, child. Especially actions involving blood."
SCENE 3 - THE ROOFTOP (Sunset)
Elena found Damien on the highest tower of the estate, standing at the edge like he was contemplating flight.
"You could have stopped me," she said softly.
"No," he replied without turning. "I couldn't watch him die. Not when you..." He trailed off.
"When I what?"
"When you love him."
"I love you too."
He turned then, his eyes darker than she'd ever seen them. "Do you? Or do you love the idea of me? The dangerous vampire prince who's obsessed with you?"
"That's not fair."
"Isn't it?" He moved closer, his presence overwhelming. "You don't know me, Elena. Not really. You know the version I show you. The controlled, protective guardian. But underneath..." His fangs extended slightly. "Underneath, I'm a monster."
"You're not—"
"I've killed thousands. Fed on innocents. I've done things that would make you run screaming."
"That was before."
"Before what?"
"Before me."
He laughed bitterly. "You think you can redeem me? Save my soul?"
"I think you've already saved yourself. Every day you choose not to be that person anymore."
"And what happens when I can't choose anymore? What happens when the hunger takes over?"
Elena stepped closer, close enough to touch. "Then I'll bring you back."
"You can't—"
She kissed him.
It wasn't gentle. It was desperate, fierce, trying to prove something words couldn't express.
Damien froze for a heartbeat, then his arms wrapped around her, pulling her against him. The kiss deepened, centuries of loneliness and hunger poured into this one perfect moment.
When they finally broke apart, both were breathing hard.
"Elena," he whispered against her lips.
"I choose both," she said.
He pulled back, staring at her. "What?"
"I choose both. You and Kael. I can't... I won't choose between you. I know it's selfish and impossible and probably insane, but—"
"The prophecy," he said slowly. "Unity of all species."
"Maybe it means more than just peace between vampires and werewolves. Maybe it means... this. Us. All of us, together."
"Kael will never agree to that."
"Won't I?"
They both spun to find Kael standing in the rooftop doorway. He looked exhausted but determined.
"You were listening?" Damien accused.
"I can feel her now, remember? I felt her distress. I came to help." He walked toward them slowly. "And I heard what she said."
"And?" Elena asked, heart pounding.
Kael looked at Damien. Really looked at him. "You saved my life today. You could have let me die. One less rival. But you helped her save me."
"She would have been devastated if you died."
"Exactly." Kael turned to Elena. "You want us both?"
"Yes."
"And you?" He looked at Damien. "Could you share?"
Damien was quiet for a long moment. "I've lived for three centuries. I've learned that life is rarely what we expect. If the choice is sharing her or losing her..."
"It's not a choice at all," Kael finished.
They stood there, the three of them, as the sun set behind them, painting the sky in shades of red and gold.
"This won't be easy," Damien warned.
"Our species have been enemies for a thousand years," Kael added.
"People will try to tear us apart," Elena said.
"Let them try," both men said simultaneously, then looked at each other in surprise.
For the first time, Kael smiled at Damien. Not a smirk or a grimace, but a real smile. "We might actually make this work."
"We might," Damien agreed, the corner of his mouth quirking up.
Elena felt something shift in the air. Not magic, but something just as powerful.
Understanding.
Acceptance.
The beginning of something impossible.
SCENE 4 - DINNER (Night)
Dinner at the Valdric estate was an experience.
The dining room was massive, with a table that could seat thirty. Tonight, it held five: Elena, Damien, Kael, Mia, and Selene.
"So," Mia said, cutting into her steak (rare for the vampires' sensibilities, well-done for the humans), "are we going to talk about the polyamorous supernatural elephant in the room, or should we keep pretending this is a normal dinner?"
Elena choked on her water.
Kael laughed—a rich, warm sound.
Even Damien's lips twitched.
"Leave it to you, Mia, to cut straight to the heart of things," Selene said, amused.
"It's a gift," Mia said cheerfully. "So, how does this work? Do you guys, like, take turns? Is there a schedule? Monday-Wednesday-Friday for vampire boy, Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday for wolf guy, Sundays for Elena's self-care?"
"Mia!" Elena's face was burning.
"What? These are important questions! You're basically starting a supernatural throuple. There should be rules. Guidelines. A mission statement."
"She has a point," Kael said, surprising everyone. "We need to figure out how this works. The logistics, the boundaries..."
"The sleeping arrangements," Damien added dryly.
Elena wanted to crawl under the table and die.
"Can we maybe talk about this when my best friend and teacher aren't present?"
"Actually," Selene said, "this is relevant to your training. Your power is tied to your emotions. These two," she gestured at Damien and Kael, "affect your emotions more than anything else. We need to understand the dynamic to help you control your abilities."
"Plus, I'm not missing this conversation," Mia added. "This is better than any reality show."
Elena looked at Damien and Kael. "Are you two okay with this?"
They exchanged a look.
"We agreed to try," Damien said.
"That means talking about it," Kael added. "Even the uncomfortable parts."
"Especially the uncomfortable parts," Selene said. "Now, let's start with the obvious. You're blood-bonded to Kael. That creates a permanent psychic connection. You'll feel each other's emotions, sometimes see each other's thoughts."
"What about Damien?" Elena asked.
"I could create a similar bond with you," Damien said carefully. "But it would require you to drink my blood."
"That would make her part vampire," Kael said, tensing.
"Only partially. She wouldn't turn, but she'd gain some abilities. Heightened senses, faster healing, perhaps limited compulsion resistance."
"And the mate bond?" Elena asked Kael. "How does that work?"
"It's..." Kael struggled for words. "It's like gravity. You're the center, and everything in me orbits around you. I can fight it, but it's always there. The need to protect you, to be near you, to..." He cleared his throat. "To claim you."
"Claim?" Mia asked with interest.
"Werewolf mating involves a claiming bite," Selene explained clinically. "Usually on the neck. It marks the mate as taken, bonds them permanently."
"And vampires?" Elena asked.
"We have something similar," Damien said. "An eternal bond. Blood exchanged during... an intimate moment. It ties souls together permanently."
"So basically, you both want to bite her," Mia summarized.
"Crude but accurate," Selene agreed.
Elena's face was on fire. "Can we talk about something else? Please? Like the person who poisoned Kael?"
The mood immediately sobered.
"The poison was delivered through the food supply," Damien said. "Someone infiltrated our security."
"Someone on the inside," Kael agreed. "The wolfsbane was specifically modified to affect me. They knew I was here."
"The question is why just Kael?" Selene mused. "If they wanted Elena vulnerable, why not poison both guardians?"
"Maybe they didn't want me dead," Kael said slowly. "Maybe they wanted me incapacitated. Unable to protect but still alive."
"To draw out Elena's blood," Damien realized. "They knew she'd try to save you."
"They wanted to see what her blood could do," Selene said. "This was a test."
"A test for what?" Elena asked.
Before anyone could answer, the lights flickered.
Then went out completely.
In the darkness, a voice echoed through the dining room. Not from any specific direction, but from everywhere at once.
"Hello, little Blood Rose."
Elena recognized it immediately. The voice from the forest. The thing that had been watching.
"Did you enjoy my gift? The poisoned wolf was quite clever, I thought."
Kael growled, his eyes glowing gold in the darkness.
"Who are you?" Damien demanded, his voice deadly.
"I'm hurt you don't remember me, young prince. But then, you were barely fifty when we last met. At your mother's funeral."
Damien went rigid.
The lights flickered back on, and everyone gasped.
Written on the wall in what looked like blood were the words:
"The sins of the parents shall be visited upon the children.
Your parents took everything from me.
Now I'll take everything from you.
Starting with the girl."
"Protective circle, now!" Selene commanded.
Everyone moved instantly, surrounding Elena.
But the presence was already gone, leaving only the bloody message and a single black rose on Elena's plate.
A rose that hadn't been there before.
"What does it mean?" Elena asked, her voice shaking.
Damien picked up the rose carefully. It crumbled to ash in his hand, but not before he saw the small tag attached to the stem.
Three words that made his face go pale:
"Remember the massacre."
"What massacre?" Elena demanded.
Damien and Selene exchanged looks.
"Twenty years ago," Selene said slowly, "there was an event. Vampires, werewolves, and witches all in one place. A peace summit."
"What happened?"
"Everyone died," Damien said flatly. "Hundreds of supernatural beings, slaughtered in one night."
"Including," Kael said, understanding dawning on his face, "a vampire queen, an alpha couple, and..."
"And a young witch and her hybrid husband," Selene finished. "The only ones who escaped were the children. Hidden before the massacre began."
Elena's blood ran cold. "My parents were there?"
"We think so," Selene said. "The timeline fits. And if they were the hybrid couple..."
"Then whoever did this," Elena said, looking at the bloody wall, "killed my parents."
"And now they're coming for you," Damien said.
"For all of us," Kael corrected. "This isn't just about Elena. It's about finishing what started twenty years ago."
"The complete annihilation of the supernatural world," Selene said.
Elena stood slowly, power crackling around her like static electricity.
"Let them come," she said, her voice carrying an edge that made everyone step back. "They took my parents. They won't take anyone else."
The lights flickered again, but this time it was from Elena's power.
"I'm done being afraid," she continued. "Done running. Done hiding." She looked at Damien and Kael. "We train harder. We get stronger. And when they come..."
Fire erupted from one hand.
Ice—somehow, impossibly, ice—formed around the other.
"We'll be ready."
Outside, thunder rumbled despite the clear night sky.
And somewhere in the darkness, ancient things stirred, drawn by the power of the Blood Rose finally embracing her destiny.
END OF CHAPTER 3Next Chapter Preview:
Elena stood in the ruined remains of what had once been a church. The vision was so real she could smell the old smoke, taste the ash in the air.
"This is where it happened," her mother's voice whispered, though the woman herself was nowhere to be seen. "This is where we died. Where you were born. Where everything began and ended."
"Mom?" Elena called out.
"Find the truth, my daughter. Find what we hid. Before he finds you."
"Who? Who's coming?"
But the vision was already fading, leaving only one word echoing in her mind:
"Brother."
