Synopsis
Knox was born an alpha, strong, feared, and meant to lead. But his blood carried a curse, one that appeared once in every generation. This time, it chose him. When the sickness awakened, it stole his control and turned his greatest love into his deepest regret. Sarah, the woman he was betrothed to, the woman he loved and protected, died by his own hands. His people did not forgive him. His family, his friends, and the community of Avalon turned their backs on him. They saw only the monster, not the man who was broken by what he had done. So Knox left. He walked away from his title, his home, and everything he once knew, choosing exile over the risk of hurting anyone ever again. For three years, he lived alone in a small cottage hidden far from the world. He spoke to no one. He trusted no one. Loneliness became his sentence and he accepted that this was all his life would ever be, he believed he was meant to be alone. Forever. Until fate crossed his path with a woman who should not exist in his colorless world. She arrived as an accident; a life placed in his hands when he least expected it. Saving her was easy. Letting her stay was not. What happens when a man who has lost everything is given one more chance?

Chapter 1 - THE ENCOUNTER

I heard the sound of a car engine, growing louder as the driver was trying to get it out from a place it was stuck. I sighed and became annoyed at the disturbance. I had chosen this place specifically because it was far away from any human activity. But it seemed that even in the middle of nowhere, I couldn't escape the presence of others.

I stepped outside and shielded my eyes from the bright headlights as a woman stumbled out of the car. "Thank God," she said, relief evident in her voice. "I thought I was going to be stuck out here all night."

I frowned, taking in her appearance. She was attractive, there was no denying that, but I had no interest in getting involved with humans anymore. They only brought trouble.

"What are you doing out here?" I asked, my tone unpleasant.

She looked taken aback by my unfriendly tone. "I, uh, my car went off the road, and I couldn't get it out. I was hoping you could help."

I sighed; my wolf perked up inside me, but I kept him at bay. I don't blame him, though. Her scent was intoxicating, and her voice sent shivers down my spine, making me react.

She had a very distinct scent, a scent I couldn't quite place. She had long black hair that went to her waist, bright brown eyes, and smooth creamy skin. Her breasts were small but perky, and I knew they would fit nicely in my hands. Her ass was round and plump, and her legs were toned and slender.

"Fine. Let me take a look." I answered her against my better judgement.

When I approached her, she smelled of honey and vanilla, and it made my mouth water. I hadn't had sex in years, and her scent alone was enough to make my cock stand to attention.

I walked over to the car and assessed the situation. It was going to be a pain in the ass to get it out of the ditch, but I could manage it.

"Get in the car and put it in neutral," I instructed.

She did as she was told, and I got to work, using my werewolf strength to push the car back onto the road. Once it was clear, I stepped back and wiped the sweat on my face with my shirt.

"Thank you so much," she said, a relieved smile on her face.

I nodded, not trusting myself to speak. There was something about her that was drawing me in, and I didn't like it. I needed to get rid of her as soon as possible.

"Well, your car is back on the road. You should be able to make it home from here," I said, turning to leave.

"Wait!" she called out, desperation in her voice. "I can't just leave without thanking you properly. Please, at least tell me your name."

I hesitated, torn between my desire to be left alone and the look of earnest gratitude on her face.

"Knox," I finally said. "My name is Knox."

She smiled, a warm, inviting smile that made my heart race. "Thank you, Knox. I'm Adriana. It was nice to meet you, and thank you so much."

She hesitated for a moment and then continued. "I'm looking for a place to stay for the night. I can't go back to town like this. I don't think I can drive to town tonight, so I was wondering if you knew of any cabins or anything around here."

I knew of a few places in the area, but I wasn't sure if I should tell her about them. She was a human and a woman, and she shouldn't be out here by herself. It wasn't safe, especially with all the wildlife around. But I also realized that I couldn't just leave her here to fend for herself.

It is a very odd feeling to have for a woman I just met, a human woman. Well, I decided to take her back to my cabin. It was the closest place, and I could keep an eye on her there. "I have a cabin not far from here. You can stay there if you want."

She looked at me in relief but also warily, like she wasn't sure if she could trust me. But then she nodded and followed me through the forest. We walked in silence for a while, and I could feel her eyes on me. She was curious about me, and I couldn't blame her.

After a while, we arrived at my cabin. It was small, but it was comfortable. I had a fireplace for heat, a small kitchen, and a loft for sleeping. Adriana looked around curiously, and I could tell she was impressed. "This is really nice," she said, setting her backpack down on the floor. "Thank you for letting me stay here."

I nodded and grunted in response. I do not know how we were going to make it till morning, because this feels like a case of a predator and prey, and she may be safe from the predators out there, but she is stuck with the biggest predator in here.

But more than that, there is a need, a feeling to touch her hair, her face, to kiss her lips. My wolf has been restless since we met her, and I hope I'm able to control him till it's morning so she can be on her merry way.

I took one of my shirts from the cupboard and handed it to her. It was dry, thick, and far too big for her, but she accepted it with a quiet thank you. Her fingers brushed mine for a second, and that small contact sent something sharp through my chest. I turned away before she could notice.

"The bathroom is through that door," I said, pointing down the short hallway. "You can clean up. I'll boil some water."

She nodded and disappeared inside. The door closed, and the cabin felt smaller than it ever had. I filled a pot and set it on the stove, keeping my back straight and my breathing slow. Her scent was everywhere now. Soft. Warm. Human. It wrapped around me like smoke, sinking into my skin, stirring something I had kept buried for years.

"This is dangerous," I told myself.

When the water boiled, I poured it into a basin and left it by the door for her. I did not knock. I did not speak. I sat by the fireplace and stared into the flames, forcing my wolf to stay still. He paced inside me, restless, alert, and drawn to her presence in a way that made no sense. It was an odd feeling to have for a woman I had just met. A human woman.

She came out later, clean, wrapped in my shirt. It hung off her shoulders, the hem brushing her thighs. I looked away quickly and handed her a cup of warm tea. She smiled at me in gratitude.

"You can take the bed; I would take the couch," I told her as I took the pillow. "No, please, I can't have you uncomfortable in your own house," she replied to me.

"I insist," I told her as I set the pillow on the couch and lay on it. She protested softly but then accepted it and climbed onto my bed. I knew her scent would be on my sheets and pillow by morning. I did not sleep. I listened to every sound. The wind, the fire, her breathing. I listened to her breathing, breathed in her scent, and felt relaxed for the first time in three years. Was it because I have not been with a woman for years? What about this woman is making me lose every ounce of control I have?
