Chapter 1 - Footsteps

Emily heard footsteps in the hallway. She wasn't expecting her son till next morning, however, her son might have changed his mind after all and came back home, she thought. "Ethan, honey is that you?" she called out to her son. When she received no response, she came out of her bedroom and walked down the hallway while switching on the lights. She opened the door of the guest room on her left and flipped on the light but, it was empty. Closing the door behind her, she checked the other guest rooms and they were also empty. All the while, she felt someone was watching but, she shook off the feeling and move on to the room they (she and Stanley, her late husband) had been preparing for their second child. That room is one room Emily doesn't like to enter unless she was depressed and needed time to sort herself out and calm herself down. The baby they were expecting hadn't been born as Emily had suffered a fall and miscarried the baby in her seventh week. The room always brought tears into her eyes despite all these years so she managed to avoid it as often as possible. Now, she just have to take a quick peak into the room to see if Ethan is in there. With trembling hands, she opened and took a shaky but deep breathe before switching on the light. The last time she had been to this room was when Stanley had died and a year or two later, she had kept it shut, without a key though. She stayed there for a minute or two before stepping fully inside the room. There was a baby's cradle and a sofa with matching baby wardrobe in the corner of the room. There was also a dressing table with a complimenting chair. Emily moved slowly towards the cradle and touched a shaky hand on the post. It was dusty. Everything in the room was very dusty and there were cobwebs on the ceiling and on the dressing mirror and the walls. She moved to the wardrobe and yanked it open.....dust and cobwebs greeted her and she sneezed from the impact but didn't back away. The baby items they had bought for the baby, ranging from duvet to baby clothes and toys were all still in the wardrobe. She and Stanley had planned to give them as charity but, they couldn't bring themselves to the task and, she had completely forgotten to give them out later since Stanley had passed away three months later. Looking at them now thought, she knew she has to let these things and the baby also go.....completely. She had managed to let Stanley go about a year ago so, this actually, should be easier. Right now, the pain at losing the baby isn't as acute as it were before. First thing tomorrow, She'll call up the Social Service Vent 'SSV', a charity organization half owned by her cousin, Maximo to come over and see what they can get from the lot. She was about to close the wardrobe when she sensed a presence but when she turned around, she was the only person in the room. A little sense of foreboding settled over her but she shook it off, quickly shut the wardrobe closed and moved out of the room, while closing the door behind her with a tad.
