Chapter 5 - Behind the fog mask

"The Art of Fog Echoes"

Karen's cold laughter echoed, a sinister glint in his eyes as he whispered,

"Terra... Round Two begins now."

The air froze for a few seconds, as if nature itself were holding its breath, then his voice boomed,

"First Form: Veil of Illusion!"

In a flash, the fog erupted from beneath Karen's feet, spreading throughout the space. Karen's body vanished, his breathing ceased, and his presence disappeared completely from everyone's senses. But the "field" did not disappear; it remained a barrier surrounding the space.

Terra took a step back, his face registering surprise. "He's using... Fog Echoes? What does that even mean?" He turned quickly to his students, his voice commanding, "Yara, Ratsu, Ren... stay behind me!"

Yara approached Ren anxiously. "Ren, can you move?" Ren, examining his body, replied,

"Yes... I think so." He looked at his wound in astonishment; the bleeding had completely stopped. "It seems the Commander's Resonance Field is accelerating my healing," he thought to himself in amazement. "What power!"

Suddenly, the fog shifted violently, and Karin's voice came from all directions: "Second Form: Mirage Reflection!"

In a flash, Karin materialized directly behind Tera. A lightning-fast "Echo" shot flew, almost splitting the air. Tera deflected it with his blade with great difficulty, so much so that the force of the impact sent him sliding half a meter to the ground before his sword cracked under the pressure.

"Commander?!" Ratsu cried out in terror.

Tera gritted his teeth, and in that critical moment, he understood the harsh reality he faced. His "Resonance" technique had been invented to counter noise; it imposed absolute "determinism" on chaotic vibrations, forcing them into control. But the "echo" Karen was using now was a uniform, pure, and shared vibration—just like the resonance his students used.

Tera looked around bitterly. Yara, Ratsu, and Rin—they all used "echo." If Tera directed the "determinism" of his field to crush Karen's resonance, his students would become direct targets of his power, and their souls would be crushed along with their enemy. If he abolished that determinism, he would leave Karen free to move within the fog.

Karen reappeared in the fog, mockingly:

"Now you understand the dilemma, Tera? Your field doesn't distinguish between enemy and disciple!" He followed this with a manic laugh: "And that's what makes the resonance... incomplete!"

Tera made up his mind with a hard expression. Suddenly, the crushing power that had weighed everyone down dissipated, and the pressure within the field dropped. Only the outer barrier remained; it had become a "field without determinism." Yara gasped, "The field... it's changed." At that moment, Ren fell to his knees, his wound bleeding profusely again. He whispered weakly, "The leader... he canceled the Inevitability to protect us."

Tera advanced toward Karen with heavy steps, his breath rising like steam. "I won't kill you, Karen... you're a traitor, and I want to know who you really are, who lurks behind that mask."

Karen retorted with a devastating attack: "The Third Form: Daggers of Mist!" The surrounding mist transformed into sharp shards, raining down from every direction. Tera began to block and maneuver, but his body was giving way. Sweat poured from his brow, and his arm trembled violently. Maintaining the field barrier without using the Inevitability drained a tremendous amount of resonant energy, but his desire to uncover Karen's identity and prevent his escape was stronger than his pain.

Karen smiled maliciously: "I was drained faster than I expected," then delivered another blow that made Tera stumble backward.

"Commander!" Ratsu shouted, but Tera raised his hand firmly. "Don't interfere!" He fixed his gaze on Karin's eyes. "Even without certainty... you're still within my domain."

Karin laughed, and a fog began to wrap around Tera like a cold shroud. "True... but now you're nothing but prey in this domain. This time... I have the upper hand!"

The fog surged down, enveloping Tera, whose strength completely failed him. His limbs grew heavy, and the echo in his veins gradually faded. Karin struck him with a final blow. "This is the end of you... die!"

A total silence fell. Tera felt detached from reality, as if time had stopped. "What is this? Am I dying?" he wondered to himself as his memories flashed before his eyes. "So... this is how my story ends?" The fog of battle dissipated, and time transported him back to a distant day... dry land, the sun bidding farewell to the horizon, and a man standing tall and unyielding. "Satoshi Shigami."

Shigami stood with his back straight, his sword seemingly an extension of his body. Tera stood a step behind him, a student observing and learning. That day, Tera's voice was filled with hesitation: "How do you always know when to fight... and when to retreat?"

Shigami didn't turn around, but continued to watch the sky meet the earth, then said calmly, "True strength, Tera... isn't in victory." He finally turned to him with a serene smile that filled the soul with tranquility, his eyes having witnessed enough endings to understand the value of beginnings.

Shigami placed his hand on Tera's shoulder and said in a tone that weighed his words with the weight of blood: "If you want to protect those you love... you must be prepared to sacrifice what is most precious to you... even if it's your life."
