Chapter 29 - The Bullet

Lyra's POV

The walk to the SUV felt like a funeral march, but in reverse.

Damon led the way through the twisted metal of the warehouse gates, carrying Cyra against his chest like she weighed nothing. Leo and Aries walked on either side of me, their small hands gripping my jacket, their earlier bravado fading into exhaustion.

I watched Damon's back. Broad. Unyielding. The shredded remnants of his dress shirt clung to his skin, soaked in sweat and the grime of battle.

He had won.

He had the children. He had me—forced into a corner by logic and safety, but trapped nonetheless.

"This is temporary," I told myself. A mantra to keep from hyperventilating. Just tonight. Just until I can contact Starfire and get a secure extraction.

I wasn't a prisoner. I was a strategist biding my time.

And yet.

When Cyra rested her head on his shoulder, her tiny hand curling into the fabric of his ruined shirt, a pang of jealousy—sharp and irrational—knifed through me. She shouldn't be that comfortable. She didn't know him.

But her wolf did. The biology I'd fought so hard to suppress was betraying me, cell by cell.

We reached the line of black SUVs waiting at the perimeter. The drivers—Storm Pack elites—snapped to attention, eyes widening as they saw the three children. As they saw the gold in their eyes that mirrored their King's.

No one spoke. No one dared.

Damon stopped at the rear door of the lead vehicle. He turned, shifting Cyra to one arm so he could open the door for us.

For a second, our eyes met.

The gold in his irises had cooled to a simmering amber, but the possessiveness was still there. Thick. Suffocating.

"Get in," he said. Not a growl, but close.

"I can open my own door, Damon."

"Get. In."

I clenched my jaw, fighting the urge to stab him with the hidden blade in my boot. "You're enjoying this."

"Safety first, Lyra." His gaze flicked to the dark treeline surrounding the industrial park. He was scanning. Always the Alpha. Always looking for the threat I'd missed.

I ushered Leo and Aries into the backseat. They climbed in without complaint, the adrenaline crash hitting them hard.

"Come here, princess," Damon murmured to Cyra, leaning into the car to settle her into the middle seat.

He was distracted. For the first time all night, his attention was entirely focused on buckling a seatbelt, his large, lethal hands surprisingly clumsy with the delicate mechanism.

That was when I saw it.

A flash of light in the trees.

Not a camera. Not a reflection.

A scope.

Reviewing the battlefield later, I would analyze the geometry. I was standing by the open door. Damon was leaning inside. The angle was perfect for a headshot on me.

"Damon!"

The warning didn't even leave my throat before I moved to shove him.

But he was faster.

He didn't look. He didn't calculate. He didn't turn to assess the threat level or the trajectory.

He simply... shifted.

One moment, he was leaning into the car, fussing over a seatbelt. The next, he had spun around, his body expanding, shielding the entire door frame—shielding me and the children inside—with his own mass.

Thwack.

It wasn't a bang. It was the wet, meaty sound of a butcher's knife hitting a slab of beef.

Damon stiffened.

His spine arched, a guttural sound ripping from his throat that wasn't quite a roar and wasn't quite a scream. It was the sound of air being forcibly ejected from lungs.

"Daddy!" Cyra shrieked.

Time turned into molasses. Thick. Slow. Horrifying.

I saw the fabric on his back explode.

Not red only.

Smoke.

White, acrid smoke hissed from the wound between his shoulder blades, smelling of burning flesh and sulfur.

Silver.

Not just silver. Liquid silver. My tech. Or a knockoff of it.

"Drive!" Damon roared, slamming the car door shut with his good arm.

He didn't get in.

He stood there, swaying, his back to us, a living shield between the sniper and his family.

"Damon!" I scrambled for the door handle, panic clawing at my throat. "Open the door!"

"Go!" he bellowed at the driver, slapping the roof of the SUV. The metal dented under his palm.

The driver hesitated, his face pale as he looked from his bleeding King to the road.

Another shot rang out. This one pinged off the bulletproof glass right where my head had been a second ago.

Damon took that one too. It grazed his shoulder, spinning him around.

He fell against the window.

Through the reinforced glass, I saw his face.

He wasn't angry. He wasn't arrogant.

He was grey. His lips were bloodless. The gold in his eyes was flickering, dying out like a candle in a windstorm.

He slid down the glass, leaving a smear of dark, smoking blood.

"Open this door!" I screamed, jamming my finger into the driver's neck pressure point. "Open it or I kill you!"

The driver hit the unlock button, his hands shaking.

I burst out.

Damon was on his knees in the gravel. He was trying to stand, trying to keep his body between the car and the trees, but his legs wouldn't obey. The toxin was fast. Too fast.

I skidded to my knees beside him, grabbing his shoulders. "Damon. Look at me."

His skin was burning. Literally. I could feel the heat radiating through his clothes. The smell of searing meat made bile rise in my throat.

"Get... inside," he wheezed. Blood bubbled past his lips.

"Where is it?" I ripped his shirt open.

The wound was a black hole in his chest. The silver hadn't just pierced; it was spreading, eating through his veins like acid.

"Sniper..." He grabbed my wrist. His grip was weak. Terrifyingly weak. "Taking... the kids."

"Shut up," I snapped, tears blurring my vision. "Don't you dare die on me. Not now. Not when I still hate you."

He tried to laugh, but it came out as a cough that splattered blood onto my cheek.

"Take them..." His eyes rolled back, fighting to stay focused on my face. "Take them... to the Manor. Safe there."

"Damon!"

"Promise," he rasped. His fingers dug into my skin, bruising me. "Promise... home."

"Yes," I choked out. "Yes, I promise. Just stay awake!"

But the command had been given. His duty was done.

His hand slipped from my wrist.

The Alpha King, the strongest creature I had ever known, the monster who had haunted my nightmares for six years, collapsed forward into the dirt.

"Boss!" The security team was finally reacting, returning fire into the trees, swarming around us.

I didn't hear the gunfire. I didn't hear the orders being shouted.

I only heard the silence where his heartbeat should have been.

"Get him in the car!" I yelled, my voice cracking. "Move!"

Two guards hauled his dead weight up. His head Lolled back, exposing his throat. Vulnerable. Exposed.

I grabbed his legs, ignoring the blood soaking into my jeans. We shoved him into the backseat of the second SUV.

I didn't go back to the kids. I couldn't.

"Follow me," I ordered the driver of the kids' car through the comms I ripped off a guard's vest. My voice was ice. Cold, hard, and utterly ruthless. "Pattern Delta. If we lose him, I will hunt you down myself."

I jumped into the backseat with Damon.

"Manor," I told the driver. "Drive like hell."

Damon lay across the seat, his breathing shallow and ragged. The toxic silver was still hissing in his wound.

I placed my hands over the hole, trying to stem the flow, trying to hold his life inside his body.

My hands were covered in his blood.

Warm. sticky. Real.

He hadn't thought. He hadn't bargained. He hadn't asked for a contract or a submission.

He had just taken the bullet.

For six years, I had told myself he was incapable of love. That he was a creature of instinct and pride, incapable of sacrifice.

I looked at his pale face, the sweat matting his dark hair to his forehead.

I was wrong.

"You idiot," I whispered, pressing harder on the wound as the car swerved onto the highway. "You absolute, arrogant idiot."

I leaned down, my lips brushing his ear.

"If you die," I hissed, "I will raise your children to call Jax 'Daddy'. Do you hear me? Wake up!"

His finger twitched.

It was enough.

"Floor it," I shouted at the driver.

We were going to the Manor. We were going into the lion's den.

But this time, I wasn't being dragged.

I was leading the charge.
