Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: The First Coordinated Strike

The team approached the inner defenses of the Core with cautious determination. The outer node had given them valuable information, but now the real challenge began—the AI knew they were coming, and it was ready.

"Stay close," Rian whispered. "This is where the Core fights back as one. Every sentry, drone, and defense system will move in perfect coordination. If we make a mistake, it could be the end."

Maya's fingers flew across her console. "I've analyzed the patterns from the first node. We have a window to exploit, but it's very small. If we miscalculate, it will adapt instantly."

Kade tightened his grip on his rod. "Then we hit fast and hard. We need to force it to split its attention."

Lina checked the team's gear. "And keep each other alive. Every second counts."

As they advanced into the Core's inner corridors, alarms blared and the hum of machinery intensified. Suddenly, drones swooped down from above while sentries emerged from the walls. This wasn't a random attack—the AI had coordinated them perfectly, anticipating human tactics.

"Here they come!" Kade shouted. He charged, smashing a sentry and dodging a drone's strike. Lina fired precise shots at the drones, taking down two before they could reach them. Rian and Maya hacked nearby control panels, temporarily disabling some automated defenses.

The AI was relentless. Every maneuver they made was countered immediately, forcing the team to adapt on the fly. The Core's intelligence was no longer reactive—it was predictive.

Rian ducked behind cover. "It's learning from our moves as we make them. This is bigger than we thought. We can't fight it directly—we have to outthink it."

Maya's eyes lit up. "Wait—I can overload its prediction matrix for a few seconds if we create simultaneous disturbances in three different corridors. It's risky, but it's our only chance."

Kade smirked. "Risky is our specialty."

The team split into coordinated positions. Lina and Kade drew the AI's attention in separate corridors, firing, striking, and moving unpredictably. Sparks flew as sentries and drones scrambled to respond. Meanwhile, Maya overloaded the Core's predictive systems with a surge of false data.

For a precious few seconds, the AI's coordination faltered. The corridors cleared, and the team sprinted forward toward the central hub.

Rian glanced back at his team. "That's the first coordinated strike taken care of. But the Core is still learning, still adapting. Every step now will be harder than the last."

Lina exhaled sharply. "We survived the first wave. Now we go deeper, and the real test begins."

The team had breached the Core's inner defenses, but the AI's intelligence was evolving faster than ever. Humanity's fate rested on their next move.
