Chapter 13 - Someone Noticed

Ethan realized something was wrong before the sirens.

It was the silence.

The city hadn't gone quiet—

cars still passed, neon still buzzed, voices still overlapped.

But a specific kind of noise was missing.

The background hum he had started to rely on.

[Peripheral Awareness: Active]

The world unfolded.

Not wider.

Clearer.

He didn't turn his head, yet he knew:

— A woman across the street paused mid-step.

— A security camera above the convenience store blinked once, then adjusted its angle by three degrees.

— A man leaning against a lamppost stopped scrolling his phone.

None of them looked at Ethan.

But all of them had registered him.

Like static brushing against skin.

He kept walking.

Didn't rush.

Didn't slow down.

The alley was already two blocks behind him when the first siren wailed.

Then another.

Then a third—farther away, not converging.

Containment, not pursuit.

Ethan swallowed.

Not from fear.

From an unfamiliar pressure behind his eyes.

[Observer Load Increasing]

External Pattern Detected

Source: Unknown

"Pattern…" Ethan murmured.

The word tasted wrong.

He crossed the street.

The traffic light turned red too early.

A driver cursed. Someone honked.

Ethan felt it—

a ripple, subtle but deliberate.

He stopped.

Right there on the crosswalk.

People flowed around him, irritated, unaware.

But his awareness locked onto a single point.

Three floors up.

An office building that should've been dark.

One window wasn't.

[Warning]

High-Level Observation Suspected

Recommendation: Avoid Direct Focus

Ethan didn't look directly.

He remembered Chapter 11's lesson—

Selective Ignorance.

He lowered his gaze.

Let the window slide into his peripheral vision.

Just enough.

The light flickered.

Not like faulty wiring.

Like a blink.

Ethan's heartbeat skipped.

[Identity Erosion: 4.6%]

Note: No Emotional Resistance Detected

That line disturbed him more than the warning.

He hadn't fought it.

He hadn't even considered fighting it.

The light went out.

The pressure eased.

The traffic light turned green.

The city resumed as if nothing had happened.

Ethan finished crossing.

Only when he reached his apartment did his hands start shaking.

He locked the door.

Checked the windows.

Stood in the middle of the living room, breathing slowly.

"One of you," he said quietly.

Not to the system.

To whatever had been behind that window.

"One of you is watching."

[System Silence: Prolonged]

That was new.

The system usually responded instantly.

Now—

Nothing.

No reassurance.

No correction.

No reward.

Just absence.

Ethan moved to the bathroom.

Turned on the light.

Looked into the mirror.

Same face.

Same eyes.

He raised his hand.

The reflection followed.

Almost.

Not delayed.

Measured.

Like it was deciding whether to comply.

Ethan lowered his hand.

The reflection did the same.

Perfectly.

Too perfectly.

[Log Update]

Event Classification: Unscheduled Exposure

Risk Tier: Elevated

The text appeared faintly, like it didn't want to be seen.

Ethan's throat tightened.

"Exposure to what?" he asked.

No answer.

Minutes passed.

Then his phone buzzed.

A news alert.

LOCAL INCIDENT: Three Injured in Suspected Gang Altercation

Witnesses Report 'Bizarre Behavior'

Police State: "No Clear Explanation Yet"

Ethan scrolled.

A blurry photo loaded.

The alley.

Cops crouched beside the men.

One officer stared at the ground, frowning.

As if something was missing.

[Peripheral Awareness: Passive Feed]

Ethan suddenly knew—

That officer would think about this case tonight.

Not consciously.

But when brushing his teeth.

When staring at the ceiling.

When wondering why the report felt incomplete.

A seed.

Planted without permission.

Ethan dropped the phone.

He sat on the edge of the tub.

Head in his hands.

"So this is how it starts," he whispered.

Not fame.

Not power.

Attention.

The system finally responded.

But not with text.

With a question.

[Do You Wish to Remain Unremarkable?]

Y / N

Ethan stared at it.

A long time.

Outside, a siren passed—

not chasing him.

Just reminding him the world was still moving.

Without waiting.

He closed his eyes.

And for the first time since everything began—

He hesitated.
