Caspian's POV
The fire popped and cracked in front of me.
I sat on a rough log, elbows on my knees, staring into the flames while Dan kept rambling about this and that.
I half-heard him… my mind had drifted back to the past.
"—and if we shift the eastern watch a little closer to the creek, we might—"
"Yeah… sure," I muttered.
Truth was, a low pressure was building somewhere inside me. A headache pierced through my forehead.Something felt… off. Like a mighty weight sitting behind my ribs I couldn't explain.
Dan nudged the fire with a stick. "You even listening, Cas?"
"Mostly," I said, rubbing my palm against my forehead absent-mindedly.
And damn… the wound split open again.
"Ah—fuck!"
Pain shot straight up my arm. I jerked my hand back, but it was too late. A few drops of my blood fell straight into the fire.
For a second nothing happened.
Then the flames snapped…green.Like emerald.
Dan froze. "…Uh.Cas…Alpha…you…you alright?"
