Chapter 2 - 2. Victory and Rivalry That Night

"The Women-run Workplace of the Year, Czarina Aurelia!"

Czarina's smile seemed to light up the entire room as she glided onto the stage. Her steps were light, almost as if she weren't touching the floor. She accepted the award with her head held high.

"A woman's strength does not lie behind a man's success," Czarina said with conviction. "That strength lives within her own heart. Even when the world tries to make her feel small."

Lorenzo clapped the loudest. His eyes never left Czarina. Meanwhile, beside him, Chrysan watched with a tightly clenched jaw. Her face flushed with a surge of emotion. Her left eye occasionally flickered toward something hidden under their table. A small bag that she gripped far too tightly.

THE RECEPTION AREA.

Czarina approached Lorenzo in the quieter reception area. She wore the formal smile she usually reserved for business meetings. "Mr. Moretti, I am very impressed with what you have built in the food and beverage industry. It is an inspiration to many."

Lorenzo grinned widely, accentuating his sharp, handsome features. "Thank you. But I am more impressed by someone who can silence an entire room with a single smile and has the courage to take the blame for a mistake that wasn't hers."

Czarina laughed softly. She turned her face away for a moment, avoiding Lorenzo's intense gaze. "Do you say things like that to every woman you meet?"

"Only to women who do not break easily and know their own worth. Like you."

Before Czarina could respond, a deep voice rudely cut into their conversation. "I don't think she needs sweet talk from a man who only likes to be the center of attention."

Louis emerged from behind a marble pillar. His eyes were as cold as forged steel. His hands were clasped tightly in front of his chest, showing a posture that was both defensive and aggressive.

"Czarina! You again?" Czarina closed her eyes for a second before facing Louis's gaze. "Still hung up on your expensive suit? I told you. I will pay for it."

"I am not hung up on the suit. I am hung up on the way you belittle others just to prove you are right," Louis said flatly, though his words were loaded with anger. "Or is there something else you are hiding?"

Lorenzo looked between the two of them. His expression turned serious. "What is actually going on here? You two seem to know each other better than you're letting on."

"The problem is this." Louis sharpened his gaze on Czarina. "This woman doesn't seem to know her place. Especially in a business world reserved for certain people."

"You're ridiculous!" Czarina snapped. Her right hand balled into a fist at her side.

"Or maybe I'm just more honest than you. You're the one who likes to hide the truth behind this mask of elegance." Louis stepped forward. Only a few inches remained between them. His breath carried the scent of sharp, dominant, expensive cologne.

Lorenzo immediately placed a hand on Louis's shoulder, checking the man's movement. "Enough, Xander. Tonight is for celebrating, not for fighting over a bruised ego."

Czarina steadied her quickening breath. She felt her heart racing against Louis's provocation. "My ego is not bruised, Mr. Moretti. I simply cannot stand baseless arrogance."

Louis snorted, a short sound full of contempt. He adjusted his gold watch. "Arrogance is often seen as a threat by those who lack competence."

"Competence?" Czarina laughed cynically. "My company just won the award for best workplace. If that isn't competence, perhaps your definition needs an update."

The tension between the three of them created a vacuum in the middle of the festive party. Other guests began to glance over, realizing that tonight's awards were merely the surface of a much deeper rivalry.

"We'll see how long you can survive with that idealism," Louis whispered directly into Czarina's ear before turning to leave.

Czarina stood frozen. She watched Louis's retreating back, realizing that this confrontation had just opened a dangerous new chapter in her career. Beside her, Lorenzo continued to watch in silence, as if calculating the next chess move in a game where only he knew the rules.

"Don't let him get to you," Lorenzo said quietly. "Men like Louis are only afraid of the things they cannot buy."

Czarina only gave a small nod. She knew this wasn't just about a soiled suit or harsh words. There was something in Louis's eyes that told her this was the beginning of a pursuit.

The hall lights began to dim slowly, signaling the end of the official event. But for Czarina Aurelia, Louis Xander, and Lorenzo Moretti, the real night was just beginning beneath the shadows of the glittering city lights.
