Chapter 16 - Border Mines

The sound of grunts pulled me out of my deep slumber, and then pain slammed into my body, causing me to let out a cry of agony. My muscles throbbed, my bones felt bruised, and my nerves screamed as though they had been set on fire.

My brain was still foggy as I tried to recall how and what caused me so much pain. I remember sleeping late after Lilith had walked away because I'd been trying to figure out how to get her back under my control. What then had happened?

A whimper escaped me, and then the memories burst forth like a spring. When Tala and Nala entered my cell first thing in the morning, all pleas and methods of reasoning with them fell on deaf ears. At first, I had tried to endure it in silence and refused to give them the satisfaction of hearing me scream, but my resolve had lasted perhaps three minutes.
