Cherreads

Chapter 17 - CHAPTER SEVENTEEN - Severance

The engines broke through the trees like thunder splitting bone.

Spotlights ignited the clearing in harsh white beams.

Omega Division didn't move quietly.

They moved like inevitability.

"DOWN!" Daniel shouted.

Gunfire tore through bark and rock. Bullets sparked against the tree trunk behind them.

Ten screamed. Evelyn dragged her behind a fallen log.

Mara stood frozen in the center of it all.

Twelve was rising.

Not fully stable—but functional.

Omega soldiers fanned outward in formation.

"PRIMARY ASSET VISUAL CONFIRMED."

"ENGAGE CONTAINMENT."

Containment.

Not kill.

Voss still wanted them alive.

Daniel fired first.

Two soldiers dropped.

Three more advanced.

"Mara!" Daniel barked. "NOW!"

Twelve staggered toward her, movements jerky but intent clear.

He wasn't looking at Omega.

He was looking at her.

"Mara..."

The word was almost human.

Zero screamed inside her mind.

"SEVERANCE."

The Path flared violently.

Not smooth like before.

Cracked.

Shattered glass instead of flowing water.

Mara grabbed Twelve's face with both hands.

His skin was cold metal and heat beneath.

She locked eyes with him.

The Omega commander shouted—

"DO NOT LET HER COMPLETE THE SIGNAL—"

Too late.

Mara inhaled.

And spoke the code.

The forest detonated.

White light exploded outward in a shockwave that knocked Omega soldiers off their feet.

Daniel hit the ground hard, ears ringing.

Evelyn shielded Ten as trees snapped outward from the epicenter.

Mara felt her consciousness split in half.

One half anchored.

One half tearing free.

Twelve screamed.

Not rage.

Agony.

The Path tore open like a wound.

She felt his entire structure—

Amplification nodes.

Suppression blocks.

Failsafe kill triggers.

Emotional dampeners.

She ripped.

She severed.

She forced dominance.

The signal shrieked.

Twelve's body convulsed violently.

For one impossible second—

Mara felt herself winning.

The connection snapped.

Silence.

Then something else answered.

Cold.

Precise.

Controlled.

Nine.

His signal slid into the fracture like a blade into an open wound.

"Interference detected," Nine's voice echoed through the Path.

Mara's breath shattered.

"No—"

Zero screamed.

"He's hijacking the severance!"

Nine wasn't trying to stop it.

He was redirecting it.

Twelve's scream changed.

From pain—

To fury.

His eye flared pure white.

The severance code twisted.

Instead of disconnecting—

It rewrote.

Mara gasped as something ripped backward through her.

Not absorption.

Not domination.

Transfer.

Twelve's amplification spike surged—

Then collapsed inward.

His body froze mid-scream.

And dropped.

Dead silent.

The light in his eye flickered—

Then dimmed.

Gone.

The Path slammed shut.

The shockwave stopped.

Smoke drifted across the clearing.

Omega soldiers scrambled to their feet.

Daniel staggered toward Mara.

"Twelve—?"

Mara couldn't speak.

Her hands trembled violently.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

She felt... louder.

Inside her skull, where there had once been two signals—

There was now only one.

And it was too big.

Zero materialized weakly.

Her voice trembled for the first time.

"You didn't sever him."

Mara's eyes widened.

"What did I do?"

Zero stared at her.

"You absorbed the amplification."

Daniel went still.

Omega soldiers regrouped.

The commander shouted—

"TARGET IS UNSTABLE. RETRIEVE HER!"

Mara looked down at her hands.

They were glowing.

Not softly.

Not gently.

Like veins filled with lightning.

Twelve lay motionless behind her.

Not moving.

Not breathing.

Nine stepped from the treeline.

Untouched.

Unhurried.

He studied Twelve's body.

Then looked at Mara.

There was something almost... satisfied in his expression.

"Well," he said calmly.

"That accelerated things."

Mara staggered back.

"I didn't mean—"

Nine tilted his head.

"You weren't meant to."

Omega soldiers rushed in.

Daniel fired wildly.

Mara felt the amplification spike again—

But now it was hers.

Not his.

The Path didn't open.

It detonated.

A violent pulse erupted outward.

Omega soldiers flew backward like rag dolls.

Weapons melted.

Trees bent away from her.

Daniel shielded his eyes.

Nine didn't move.

He simply watched.

Mara's breathing became erratic.

She couldn't regulate it.

Couldn't dampen it.

It wasn't controlled.

It was overwhelming.

Zero's voice cut through the chaos.

"You are unstable!"

Mara screamed.

The amplification surged again.

Cracks spidered through the ground.

Omega vehicles flipped in the distance.

Daniel grabbed her shoulders.

"Mara! LOOK AT ME!"

She couldn't.

Everything was too bright.

Too loud.

Too powerful.

Nine's voice drifted through the destruction.

"Congratulations," he said softly.

"You've become what he was."

Mara's eyes snapped to him.

Pure white.

And for a split second—

Nine hesitated.

The blast that followed was uncontrolled.

Wild.

It tore the clearing apart.

When the light faded—

Omega was gone.

Vehicles destroyed.

Soldiers scattered.

Twelve's body lay still.

Nine had retreated into the trees.

Daniel knelt beside Mara.

She was conscious.

But shaking violently.

Zero hovered above her, fading rapidly.

"You broke the balance," Zero whispered.

Mara's voice was hollow.

"He's gone."

Zero's glow flickered.

"No."

Mara looked up.

"What?"

Zero met her eyes.

"He's inside you now."

Silence.

Wind moved through broken trees.

In the distance—

Sirens.

More Omega.

Mara's hands trembled.

Inside her mind—

Something breathed.

Not Zero.

Not her.

Something new.
