At school, during a break, a group of students were chatting:
"Did you guys watch the latest two episodes of Code Geass? The plot twist was totally unexpected!"
"I've been following it since the beginning. I never thought Euphemia would die, and in such a tragic way... It was heartbreaking."
"What?! Euphemia's dead?"
"Yeah, and the cause of death shook my whole family... Wait, you haven't seen it?"
"I've been swamped the last two weeks. I was planning to just watch the final two episodes, and then buy the DVD later to catch up."
"You missed out! The plot is insane, though it gets a little dark."
"Dark? It's super dark! But it's really good. I'm so hyped for the last two episodes now."
"Me too!"
On Saturday night, a couple had been on a date until past ten o'clock. As it was nearing eleven, the man suddenly said, "Sorry, I should probably head back soon."
"Huh? You're leaving already?" the woman asked, surprised.
"There's an anime I've been wanting to watch at 11:30. It's down to the last two episodes, and I have a feeling it's going to be amazing. I really don't want to miss it."
"Am I not as interesting as that anime?"
"..."
"Hey! Say something! What's with the silence? Is that anime really more interesting than me?"
"Ahem, no, that's not what I meant. I was just thinking about how to introduce this anime to you."
"Forget it. Go back if you want. I have a TV show I want to watch tonight anyway... Just make it up to me next time."
"Will do."
They parted ways and went home.
Then, at 11:30, both of them started watching the same anime: Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion.
In truth, the final two episodes of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion were truly spectacular.
The Black Knights, led by Lelouch, clashed with the Imperial Army, commanded by Second Princess Cornelia, in a massive battle for Tokyo.
One side held the moral high ground, harnessing the fury of the populace, with countless citizens supporting and joining their ranks. The other side was a powerful, professional military force, unlike the Black Knights' ragtag assembly.
In terms of skilled fighters, Lelouch's side boasted him and C.C., of course, as well as Karen, Toudou, and Toudou's Four Holy Swords. The Imperial Army, however, had even more experts, including Second Princess Cornelia, Suzaku, and Jeremiah, who had undergone human augmentation.
Still, Lelouch's King's Power was an overwhelming cheat, and combined with the powerful black mecha he had seized from the deserted island, he could single-handedly hold his own against several opponents.
The battle raged back and forth with brutal intensity, but in a localized engagement, Lelouch successfully defeated Cornelia.
After defeating Cornelia, Lelouch used his King's Power on her to question her about the assassination of his mother, Princess Marianne. What he learned left him stunned:
On the day of the assassination, before it even occurred, Princess Marianne had already learned of the impending attack. She herself had ordered Cornelia to divert the guard units, as if to facilitate the assassins' actions.
Cornelia didn't know the specifics. When Lelouch pressed her, she simply said, "By His Majesty the Emperor's command, Crown Prince Schneizel transported the body."
Before Lelouch could press for more details, C.C. delivered another shocking piece of news: his sister, Nunnally, had been kidnapped.
The kidnapper, who called himself V.V., appeared as a young boy. His name immediately made Lelouch suspect he might be a mysterious entity like C.C.
Before abducting Nunnally, V.V. had also approached Suzaku, telling him about Geass.
At first, Lelouch refused to believe Nunnally had been captured. It wasn't until after making several calls and confirming her disappearance that he panicked. He abandoned everything on the battlefield, leaving Toudou in charge, and rushed to Kamigen Island with C.C., as she claimed that was where Nunnally had been taken.
Jeremiah, who had undergone human augmentation and harbored a deep resentment toward Zero for the false accusations, refused to let Lelouch leave and pursued him relentlessly.
Meanwhile, Suzaku learned from Cornelia that Zero had gone to Kamigen Island and quickly followed. At the same time, Karen, trailing behind Suzaku, also headed to the island, intending to assist Zero.
Upon arriving at Kamigen Island, unable to shake off Jeremiah, C.C. urged Lelouch to rescue Nunnally first. She then piloted a flying mecha into battle against Jeremiah. In a near-mutual destruction, both mechs plunged into the sea.
On the island, Lelouch stood before a large gate, about to push it open, when Suzaku arrived.
Suzaku, pistol in hand, fired a shot at the large gate before turning the gun toward Lelouch. He slowly approached, his voice dripping with contempt. "Turn around, slowly."
Lelouch's heart raced, but he had no choice. He slowly turned around.
"How convenient," Suzaku sneered. "Using Geass to hide in the shadows while shifting all the blame onto others. Arrogant, despicable—that's your true nature."
Without looking back at Karen, Suzaku called out, "Karen, don't you want to know Zero's true identity?"
Behind him, Karen also leveled her gun at him.
"As someone present, you have the right to know," Suzaku stated.
With that, he fired a shot at Lelouch's helmet.
Bang! The helmet cracked, revealing Lelouch's handsome, striking face.
Karen was both shocked and devastated to discover that Zero was Lelouch.
Suzaku, however, wasn't surprised. He claimed he had long suspected the truth but had refused to believe it.
Lelouch told Suzaku that Nunnally had been captured and proposed a temporary truce to rescue her first.
Suzaku refused to listen. "Don't be so naive. You should have allied with Euphie. If you two had worked together, the world..."
"It's all in the past now. It's over," the Male Lead said without defending himself. He knew there was no point. No excuse could change the fact that he had caused Euphemia's death.
Yet his dismissive words enraged Suzaku.
The two began to argue.
"Your very existence is a mistake. The world has rejected you. I'll take care of Nunnally..." Suzaku raged.
Hearing this, Lelouch also grew furious. He pulled a handgun from his coat and shouted, "Suzaku!"
Across from him, Suzaku roared back, "Lelouch!"
Bang!
A gunshot rang out.
Who fired? Who was hit? All that remained was a shot of Nunnally hearing the shot in the darkness.
The suspense peaked as the ending theme began.
After the credits rolled, the camera focused on C.C. Her mecha was plummeting into the deep sea, accompanied by a concluding statement:
"Humanity exists to pursue happiness.
The young Lelouch of Britannia desired nothing more than a small measure of happiness, nothing extraordinary. At its core, his motivation was simply a fundamental human wish, as natural as breathing.
Who could deny such a dream, such a vow? Who would dare to question it?
Yet, whether we wish it or not, humans are bound by our connections to others and to the world. Our destinies are shaped by these ties, and in the face of the world's will, individual desires become mere illusions, buried and forgotten.
Sin and punishment, fate and judgment—what stands before Lelouch is the past he himself created. Is it the resentment that defines our humanity?
Even so, we should still be grateful.
Yes, at least humanity exists to pursue happiness.
A sliver of hope, a hazy wish, is born precisely from despair."
The first season of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion concludes here.
Immediately following this, the production of the second season was announced, with its premiere scheduled for January 2004, half a year later.
