The first day of college felt heavier than I expected.
I stood outside the main gate with my bag tight on my shoulder. Students were everywhere laughing, talking, walking fast like they already belonged here I didn't. Not yet. My heart was beating to fast and my hand fell cold even though the sun was warm.
I took a deep breath and walked onside.
The campus was big and beautiful. Tall buildings, green trees, and notice boards filled with new information. Everything looked exciting and scary at the same time this was a new life I hope it would be kind to me.
During orientation, I sat on the last bench. I didn't know anyone. I kept looking around, trying not to look post. That was when I saw him.
He was standing near the window, talking to his friend. He laughed softly, and something about that laugh made me look again. He wasn't trying to get attention, but somehow he had mine for a moments, he turned his head and our eyes met.
Just for a second.
I quickly looked down, feeling my face grow warm. I told myself it was nothing. Just a stranger. Just the first day.
But my heart didn't agree.
When the session ended,students rushed out. I stood up slowly, adjusting my bag. Suddenly, someone brushed past me, and my notebook fell to the floor. Before I could bend down, a hand picked it up.
"Here", a voice said.
I looked up.
It was him.
" Thank you," I said quietly.
He smiled - smile and warm. "First day?" he asked.
I nodded.
"Mine too," he said.
And just like that, the fear inside me felt a little lighter.
I didn't know his name. I didn't know his story. But somewhere deep inside, I felt this was not just a small moment.
It was a beginning.
