Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: Wings of Deception

Another year passed.

By now, time had lost much of its meaning to me. Empires rose and fell more quickly than seasons, and the Foundation continued its quiet, relentless expansion beneath the surface of the world.

Then, mercifully, the anomaly that appeared that year was not catastrophic.

SCP-408 — "Illusory Butterflies."

For once, fate was kind.

The entity manifested directly inside a pre-secured Foundation containment zone, as if reality itself had grown considerate. No civilian casualties. No containment breach. No panic. Within hours, the swarm was isolated, observed, and classified as Safe.

But "safe" did not mean insignificant.

SCP-408 was a sentient, hive-minded collective of Lepidoptera—fragile in body, extraordinary in function. Their ability to generate complex, fully immersive three-dimensional illusions was breathtaking. Entire environments could be fabricated. Objects, creatures, even people—perfectly convincing down to movement, texture, and spatial depth.

Their intelligence surprised even me.

An IQ equivalent of 109, operating as a single collective consciousness. They communicated clearly once we established proper channels—not as animals, but as a people.

So I spoke to them myself.

I did not threaten.

I did not coerce.

I negotiated.

I explained the nature of the world they now inhabited. Gods. Monsters. Heroes. SCPs far worse than themselves. I offered them protection, purpose, and autonomy within reason. In return, I asked for cooperation.

After deliberation—real deliberation, carried out within the swarm—they agreed.

SCP-408 would obey my orders.

Not out of fear.

But out of trust.

The implications were immediate.

Illusionary bodies—perfect replicas of myself—were deployed within hours. Public appearances, high-risk inspections, even assassination attempts would now target shadows and light rather than flesh and power.

The O5 Council loved it.

Julius immediately integrated SCP-408 into high-value security protocols.Darius began using layered illusions to conceal intelligence operations and false facilities.Shi Huang requested battlefield-scale illusion simulations for war planning.Cleopatra—ever pragmatic—approved funding without hesitation, citing "cost-effective immortality insurance."

As for me?

I now existed in multiple places at once.

Queens, Administrators, decoys, ghosts.

If someone wished to kill me, they would first have to determine which version of me was real.

And even then…

Bullets would do nothing.

The Foundation had reached a new stage.

Not just containment.

Control. Deception. Preparation.

We were no longer reacting to the world's dangers.

We were shaping how those dangers perceived reality itself.

And with SCP-408's wings woven into our strategies, even gods would struggle to see the truth.

I smiled to myself.

This was only the beginning.
