Cherreads

Chapter 78 - Poetry in the Spring Pavilion

The garden pavilion fell quiet after the challenge.

Petals of cherry blossoms drifted slowly through the air as the noble guests turned their attention toward the two young women standing across from each other.

One was Yue Ning, the newly announced fiancée of the Crown Prince.

The other was Lin Qingya, daughter of General Lin Zhiyuan.

Everyone knew this moment was not simply about poetry.

It was a test.

Lin Qingya stood gracefully, her pale blue dress flowing softly as she smiled politely.

"How about poetry?" she repeated gently.

Her voice sounded pleasant, but there was a faint sharpness beneath it.

Yue Ning looked at her calmly.

She had already noticed something in Lin Qingya's gaze.

Not open hostility.

But quiet resentment.

Still, Yue Ning showed no sign of discomfort.

Instead, she nodded lightly.

"That would be fine."

The surrounding noble ladies whispered excitedly.

"A poetry contest!"

"This will be interesting."

Lin Qingya's smile widened slightly.

Since childhood, she had been praised for her literary talent. Her teachers often claimed she possessed one of the finest poetic minds among the noble daughters of the capital.

She believed this contest would expose Yue Ning's weakness.

After all, the Yue family was known for military achievements.

Not literary elegance.

Lin Qingya gestured toward the garden pond.

"The theme shall be spring blossoms."

A servant quickly prepared brushes and paper on a nearby table.

"Each of us will compose a poem."

"Whoever writes the more refined verse shall win."

The guests nodded in agreement.

The rules were simple.

Yue Ning stepped forward calmly and took the brush.

Her brothers watched from nearby.

Second brother muttered quietly,

"She's been studying poetry since she was little."

Fourth brother chuckled.

"These people clearly don't know our sister."

Lin Qingya dipped her brush into ink first.

Her movements were elegant and practiced.

Within moments she began writing.

The crowd leaned closer to observe.

When she finished, the servant lifted the paper and read aloud.

> "Spring wind scatters petals across the jade pond,

Fragrance drifts lightly through the painted halls.

Beneath blooming branches a lonely heart waits,

Watching crimson blossoms fall with the dusk."

Several guests nodded in admiration.

"Beautiful!"

"Lady Lin truly has talent."

Lin Qingya lowered her brush gracefully and turned toward Yue Ning.

"Lady Yue, your turn."

All eyes moved to Yue Ning.

She stood quietly for a moment, looking at the garden.

Cherry blossoms swayed gently in the warm breeze.

The pond reflected the bright sky.

Then she calmly lifted the brush.

Unlike Lin Qingya's careful movements, Yue Ning wrote smoothly without hesitation.

Within a short time, she placed the brush down.

The servant read the poem aloud.

> "Spring light fills the silent mountain path,

Blossoms bloom freely beneath the open sky.

Why should petals fear the passing wind?

Their fragrance remains long after they fall."

The garden fell silent.

The poem was simple.

Yet its meaning felt deeper.

Instead of describing fragile beauty, it spoke about quiet confidence.

Even when petals fell…

Their fragrance endured.

Several older guests looked impressed.

"That is… quite thoughtful."

"Her tone is calm yet strong."

Even Lin Qingya's smile stiffened slightly.

She had expected Yue Ning to struggle.

Instead, the girl had written effortlessly.

Before the atmosphere could settle, one of the noble ladies suddenly whispered excitedly.

"Look!"

Everyone turned.

At the garden entrance stood a tall figure in dark robes.

The Crown Prince, Xu Chen.

His presence instantly changed the atmosphere.

The guests quickly bowed.

"Greetings, Your Highness!"

Xu Chen walked calmly into the pavilion.

His gaze briefly swept across the crowd before resting on Yue Ning.

"Continue," he said calmly.

"I did not come to interrupt."

But the faint hint of pride in his eyes was unmistakable.

He had arrived just in time to hear her poem.

Lin Qingya lowered her head respectfully.

But inside, her frustration grew.

Things were not going as she expected.

And far away in the capital, General Lin Zhiyuan was still waiting to hear the outcome of the gathering.

He had planned this meeting carefully.

But what he did not yet realize…

Was that the girl he intended to embarrass might become far more difficult to defeat than he imagined.
