The greenhouse had grown quieter as evening settled over Artemis Tower.
The last traces of sunlight clung to the curved glass ceiling overhead while the greenhouse's supplemental grow lights cast a soft amber glow across the terraces. Moisture gathered along the glass. Orchids folded inward for the night. Vines hung lazily from black trellises. The humid air carried the scent of damp soil and flowering plants.
Tansy slept on the meridienne near the center of the greenhouse.
The blanket had slipped halfway down one shoulder.
Galathea Brooks immediately reached over and pulled it back into place.
Then she adjusted one of the pillows.
Then another.
Then brushed a loose strand of hair away from Tansy's face.
The girl didn't stir.
Galathea studied her for another moment anyway.
Across the greenhouse, Cael Alexander stood beside one of the planters with his hands in his pockets.
Watching.
Not Tansy.
Galathea.
