Chapter 92 - Chapter 92

By the next afternoon, the intense heat radiating from Naruto's body had completely vanished.

Karin sat asleep in her chair, her head resting against the edge of the mattress, while Sasuke remained down under his blanket on the opposite side of the room. Kakashi's breathing was still slow and steady, the same as he had been.

Naruto's eyelids fluttered open. He blinked against the bright afternoon sunlight streaming through the hospital window, noticing Karin lying on her crossed arms at the edge of his bed, reaching over and gently parting a strand of her hair behind her left ear with a soft smile before he slowly slipped out of bed on the left side, clenching and unclenching his fists, stretching, and immediately noticing the ease at which he gathered chakra into his hands.

He expected to feel the lingering exhaustion or muscle aches or at least the effects of getting over a massive fever, but there was nothing. Instead, an incredible sense of clarity washed over him. Every breath felt lighter, his senses were sharper, and the chakra circulating through his pathways felt entirely restructured, denser, smoother, and vastly more potent than it had been just twenty-four hours ago. He closed his hand into a tight fist, marveling at the sudden spike in his baseline strength. He felt much more sturdy, like a wall of steel. Naruto felt like he could run all the way to Lightning Country and only stop for food; the energy he felt was on another level.

Inside his mindscape, the dark water sloshed quietly around the massive iron bars. The Nine-Tails remained sitting on his haunches, his giant crimson eyes locked onto the center of the seal. The massive beast was waiting, fully aware that the boy would soon look inward to find out why his chakra was suddenly flowing with zero interference.

And like he thought, Naruto closed his eyes and attempted to enter his mindscape, the Nine-Tails making it easy and actively pulling his consciousness inside.

He opened his eyes to find himself standing in the familiar, ankle-deep water of the dark corridor. Instead of the usual heavy, suffocating hostility that normally pressed down on him here, the air felt strangely still.

Naruto walked forward, stopping just a few feet away from the massive iron bars of the cage. He looked up, his blue eyes locking onto the towering silhouette of the beast.

The Nine-Tails did not growl, nor did he bare his teeth in a display of raw anger. He sat on his haunches, his giant crimson eyes reflecting the glowing seal on the gate as he stared down at the young ninja with an entirely new expression. The malicious intent that usually leaked through the bars was gone, replaced by a deep, calculating curiosity.

"There's no mistaking it, now, you feel just like him."

The Nine-Tails spoke, scrutinizing Naruto from head to toe.

Naruto maintained his stance in the shallow water, keeping his gaze steady against the massive beast. "Like who?"

The fox let out a low rumble that vibrated through the floor, but it lacked its usual venom. "Asura. The Sage's younger son. Your soul carries the same frequency, boy. For years it lay dormant, completely masked by your own human identity, but that man's chakra acted as a key."

Naruto's eyes narrowed slightly as he cataloged the information. He didn't know who Asura was, but the mention of a Sage connected directly to what Tsunade had discussed in the office.

"Kakashi-sensei," Naruto muttered.

"Yes," the fox said, leaning closer to the iron bars, his massive hot breath stirring the damp air. "His energy is frighteningly similar to my father's, the Sage of Six Paths. The moment your network absorbed a portion of his power, your true lineage awakened. I have no interest in fighting against my father's memory, nor do I have any desire to choke out the chakra of Asura."

"So, does that mean you'll work with me?" Naruto asked. He did not sound hopeful or against the idea, simply asking a direct question.

"Not quite," the Nine-Tails replied, a low vibration echoing from his throat. "While I will no longer mess with your chakra flow, I will not go out of my way to help you either. You might be the reincarnation of Asura, but even he had to earn my respect."

Naruto stared at the towering fox for a brief beat before a faint, confident smile touched his lips. He didn't mind the terms. Having his own chakra completely free from interference was already a massive upgrade.

"Fair enough," Naruto said, crossing his arms. "I've never asked for handouts anyway. Just stay out of my way, and I'll handle the rest."

As he spoke, Naruto focused his mind on the gloomy atmosphere surrounding them. He had hated this dark, leaking sewer for years. With his chakra finally flowing perfectly, he willed the space to change.

The murky, ankle-deep water quickly drained away, vanishing into the stone floor. The damp, mossy walls shifted, smoothing out into polished, clean stone pillars that stretched up toward a vaulted ceiling. Soft, natural light began to filter into the corridor, replacing the dark shadows with a calm, well-lit warmth.

The massive iron bars of the cage remained, but the space inside the enclosure expanded, transforming the fox's cramped cell into a massive, clean courtyard.

The Nine-Tails looked around at the sudden transformation, his tails swishing as he observed the new architecture. He didn't say anything, simply admiring the new, less dreary place he was in, lying down for the first time on dry ground in over 15 years.

"See you later, fox," Naruto said.

With a final nod, Naruto let his consciousness slip away, leaving the mindscape behind.

Back in the hospital room, Naruto opened his eyes as his consciousness returned from his mindscape. He stood calmly at the foot of the bed.

Beside the empty mattress, Karin stirred and lifted her head from her crossed arms. She blinked at the vacant sheets, and a sudden wave of panic washed over her face when she realized he was gone. Her head snapped to the right and her eyes locked onto Naruto standing right there at the foot of the bed.

The moment she realized his fever was completely gone and he was fully awake, her panic transformed into pure relief. Karin scrambled out of her chair and lunged forward, throwing her arms tightly around his neck. Naruto smiled softly, wrapping his arms around her to hold her close, letting her lean against him as the quiet room remained perfectly still around them.
