The earth moved at dawn.
It began as a vibration — a frequency below the threshold of human hearing but above the threshold of human sensation, a tremor that the soldiers on the Ashwall's battlement felt in their feet before they heard it in the stone. The vibration built over approximately thirty seconds, rising in intensity from imperceptible to unmistakable, and by the time the garrison's alert system activated — the warning horns that blew a pattern of three long, two short — every soldier on the wall knew what was happening.
