Chapter 394 - The Assignment

The vibration of the heavy drill, three kilometers down and five kilometers west, hummed steadily through the stone floor of the observation post.

Lyss Myrvalis felt it in the pads of her feet before it registered as sound. It was a constant, low-grade physical pressure that set her teeth on edge. The post—designated Kesh-4 in the Ministry files—was nothing more than an excavated hollow overlooking a cavern junction. It smelled of damp rock, old lamp oil, and the faint, sour sweat of the operative who had rotated out three days ago. It was too small, too exposed, and structurally deficient.

She had mapped three distinct escape routes within her first ten minutes of arrival. Route one: the tunnel leading left, a squeeze tight enough to strip a pursuer's gear. Route two required a running jump up to the vertical ventilation shaft above the primary egress. Route three: east, steep, dark.

Always three. One for contact, one for collapse, one for total compromise.
