Chapter 40
Lily's
I stood near the entrance to the school cafeteria. I tried to stay out of sight, hiding myself half-behind one of the large concrete pillars that held up the ceiling. The hallway was full of noise. Students moved past me in loud groups, laughing and pushing each other. They were talking about their classes, their plans for the weekend, and other things that didn't matter at all.
I didn't care about the students. I wasn't watching the crowd. I was only watching her.
Ema finally walked out of the building. She moved slowly, and her heavy school bag was hanging off one shoulder. She kept her head down, looking at the floor as she walked. Her steps were much slower than they usually were. She looked completely exhausted. She looked like she was distracted by something deep in her mind. She looked very vulnerable in that moment.
To me, she looked perfect. She was the perfect target.
