I stood perfectly still, frozen in place the moment Lily spoke those words. They seemed to hang in the air between us like a sharp, invisible blade. Reject each other. The words kept repeating in my mind, over and over. I thought about our bond. I thought about us and every single thing we had ever fought for to stay together. It felt like the floor was falling away beneath my feet.
Before I could find my voice to say a single word, and before I could even try to beg for her forgiveness or explain my side of the story, she turned her back on me. She didn't wait for a response. I watched her take slow, heavy steps up the stairs, her shoulders hunched as if she were carrying a great weight. When she reached the top, her bedroom door closed softly behind her. The sound was quiet, yet in the silence of the house, it echoed much louder and felt more painful than any loud slam could have.
