The sun was going down behind the hills, and the village was covered in soft orange light. A cool breeze moved through the fields, making the tall grass sway. Xu Yang sat under an old banyan tree at the edge of the village, one knee raised and his tail loosely around his legs. He watched the villagers coming back from the fields, but his attention kept going to the western road. Every few moments, he looked toward the trees, as if waiting for someone to appear.
Xu Yang picked up a small stone beside him and slowly rolled it between his fingers while keeping his eyes on the road."You've been staring at that road for nearly half an hour." Qing Li suddenly said beside him. Xu Yang's fingers stopped moving. He turned his head and found Qing Li already leaning against the tree trunk, arms folded loosely across his chest, his silver eyes following the same road.Xu Yang frowned. "You've been watching me this whole time?" Qing Li shrugged. "Of course. You kept looking toward the same place every few breaths, then pretending you weren't doing it. At first I thought you were waiting for someone, but then you started checking the surrounding fields as well. Now you're sitting here pretending to be calm while holding that poor stone like you're planning to interrogate it."
Xu Yang looked down at the stone in his hand. He immediately dropped it. "I was not doing that." Qing Li's lips curved into a smile. "You were." Xu Yang turned away with a quiet huff. "You're imagining things." "Am I?" Qing Li pushed himself away from the tree and stepped closer, bending slightly to look at Xu Yang's face. "Because from where I'm standing, you look like someone who has noticed something strange but doesn't want to tell anyone.Your ears keep moving whenever the wind changes, your tail tightens whenever you hear a sound, and you've checked that road so many times that I'm beginning to think you've memorized every tree along it."
Xu Yang's ears twitched before he could stop them. He quickly folded his arms. "Maybe I just like looking at the road." Qing Li stared at him for a moment before letting out a soft laugh. "You? Sitting quietly and admiring scenery? That's difficult to believe." Xu Yang gave him an annoyed look. "Why is that so difficult to believe?" "Because you usually complain when you're bored, complain when you're hungry, complain when someone talks too much, and complain when someone follows you. Yet you've been sitting here for almost an hour without complaining once."
Xu Yang opened his mouth, then stopped. He couldn't think of a response. Qing Li immediately noticed his hesitation and smiled wider. "Exactly." Xu Yang narrowed his eyes. "Don't look so pleased with yourself." "I can't help it. You're making this too easy." Qing Li reached out and lightly tapped Xu Yang's forehead with one finger. "You're unusually quiet today." Xu Yang rubbed his forehead and glared at him. "I'm always quiet." "Not like this." Qing Li replied. His teasing expression softened slightly as he studied Xu Yang. "You're tense. I can see it. You've been pretending everything is normal since earlier, but your eyes keep searching for something. If you're worried about what you felt in the air, just say so. You don't have to carry every strange feeling by yourself."
Xu Yang looked toward the village again, watching a group of villagers carry baskets into their homes. "I don't know what it is," he admitted." I felt something earlier, but it disappeared before I could trace it. It wasn't strong enough to attack us, and there wasn't any obvious spiritual disturbance, but it felt like something was testing the edge of the village." Qing Li's smile faded. He followed Xu Yang's gaze toward the fields. "And you think it might come back?" "I don't know."
Xu Yang's fingers tightened around his sleeve. "That's why I've been watching." For several seconds, neither of them spoke. The wind suddenly shifted and leaves above them rustled sharply, and Xu Yang's ears immediately stood upright. He turned toward the western road, his body tensing as his eyes scanned the darkness beginning to gather between the trees.
Qing Li noticed the reaction and moved beside him. "There?" he asked quietly. Xu Yang nodded. "Something moved." Qing Li narrowed his eyes, but nothing appeared. The villagers continued their evening chores. A child laughed somewhere near the houses. A dog barked twice before falling silent. Everything seemed perfectly normal. Xu Yang slowly released the breath he had been holding. "Maybe I was wrong." Qing Li glanced at him. "Maybe. But you don't usually doubt your instincts that quickly."
Xu Yang looked down. "I just don't want everyone to panic over something I can't prove." Qing Li was quiet for a moment before smiling again. "That's understandable, but you also have a terrible habit of pretending you can handle everything alone." Xu Yang frowned. "I can handle myself." "I know you can," Qing Li replied, his voice becoming softer. "That's not what I'm saying. You don't have to prove you're capable every time something happens. Sometimes you can simply tell someone what you're thinking."
Xu Yang looked at him, slightly surprised by the sincerity in his voice. Then Qing Li's expression suddenly became mischievous again. "Although, if you keep making that serious face, I might start worrying that you've been replaced by someone else." Xu Yang blinked. "What?" Qing Li laughed. "There. That's better. At least you look confused now instead of frighteningly serious." Xu Yang rolled his eyes and leaned back against the tree. "You're impossible." "And you're avoiding the subject." "I'm not." "You are." "I'm not." "You absolutely are."
Xu Yang stared at him for a long moment before sighing. "Fine. Maybe I'm a little tense." Qing Li nodded as though he had just won an argument. "I knew it." Xu Yang's tail flicked against the ground. "Don't look so satisfied." "I can't help it." Qing Li folded his arms again, watching Xu Yang with obvious amusement. "You know, there's something else I've noticed." Xu Yang immediately became suspicious. "What now?" Qing Li leaned slightly closer, lowering his voice as though revealing something important. "You're hiding too much." Xu Yang blinked. "Hiding what?" Qing Li smiled. "Everything. Your thoughts, your worries, your expressions..." He paused deliberately, his silver eyes moving over Xu Yang's face. "And somehow, despite all that effort, you still look… suspiciously adorable."
Xu Yang froze. His ears slowly flattened. "Adorable? Really?" Before he could argue further, voice echoed softly from above them."You're both ridiculous." Xu Yang's head snapped upward. Yan Luo appeared above the branches.Xu Yang stared at him in disbelief. "Did you just hover there silently the whole time?" Yan Luo calmly landed beside the tree. "I did." Xu Yang's tail puffed slightly. "And you didn't think it was necessary to say anything?" Yan Luo looked at him for a moment. "I considered interrupting several times, but the conversation was becoming increasingly entertaining."
Qing Li laughed. "How long were you watching?" Yan Luo's gaze shifted toward Xu Yang. "I watched you stare at the road, pretend you weren't worried, argue with Qing Li, deny being tense, and then become completely flustered because he called you adorable." Xu Yang's face warmed instantly. "You saw all of that?" Yan Luo smiled."Every moment.Your expression changed from suspicious to defensive, then from defensive to embarrassed in under three seconds. Fascinating."
Qing Li laughed softly. "See? I told you. You are adorable when you're flustered." Xu Yang's ears flattened, his tail swishing sharply behind him. "You're both ridiculous. I'm not—" "little cat hiding from the world?" Qing Li teased, finishing his sentence. Yan Luo tilted his head slightly, lips curling into a faint, rare smile. "He does have a point. You're… predictable in subtle ways." Xu Yang growled softly, though it was more playful than threatening. "Predictable? Really? I've survived this long by being unpredictable." "By hiding in the shadows like a mouse," Qing Li interrupted, teasing. "Quiet mouse."
Xu Yang muttered, flicking an ear toward them. Yan Luo's eyes gleamed. "A mouse that occasionally sets fields on fire or manipulates spirit beasts without being noticed. Yes, very subtle." Qing Li laughed again. "See, even Yan Luo notices. You're not as hidden as you think." Xu Yang pressed his hands to the wooden beam, hiding his flushed face with a tail flick. "You're both insane." "And yet," Yan Luo said softly, leaning closer, "I enjoy observing your little antics. It's… entertaining."
Qing Li's silver eyes flicked toward Xu Yang, mischievous. "I think he likes seeing you flustered too. Admit it." Xu Yang's tail lashed sharply, but he couldn't stop the small smile tugging at his lips. "I don't—" "Care?" Qing Li and Yan Luo said in perfect unison, teasing grins on their faces. Xu Yang groaned, burying his face in his arms. "You two are hopeless." Qing Li's voice was soft now, leaning close to the playful tension. "Hopeless? Or irresistible?"Xu Yang flicked an ear in protest, though a faint blush betrayed him.
Yan Luo floated a little closer, his expression calm, his voice teasing but measured. "Do try to focus. The village is still under observation, and subtle disturbances may escalate. But… your reactions are amusing, cat demon." Xu Yang peeked at him through the coils of his tail, narrowing his eyes. "Amusing, huh? I'll remember that." Qing Li chuckled beside him and folded his arms. "Remember what? That we're more fun than Heaven?" Xu Yang gave them both a pointed look, but even he couldn't hide the small smile spreading across his face. For a brief moment, the strange tension hanging over the village seemed to disappear. Then footsteps sounded from the main path.
Xu Yang's smile faded as his ears turned toward the sound. A tall woman was walking down the road toward the village. Her long pink hair fell over her shoulders, with a few strands resting near her face. She wore a dark red robe with black edges on the sleeves and collar, and a small silver hairpin held her hair in place. She walked at an easy pace, occasionally moving a loose strand of hair away from her face. She looked around as she walked, her eyes quietly taking in the village. The villagers noticed her and slowly moved to the side, watching her as she passed.
A man carrying a basket stopped in the middle of the road and stared. His wife quickly grabbed his sleeve and pulled him toward their house. "Don't stare," she whispered. "Keep your head down." The man lowered his voice. "Who is she?" An older woman standing near a doorway glanced toward the approaching figure before quickly looking away. "She's from the demon clan," she murmured. "Someone important, I think." A young boy tried to peek around his mother's arm, but his mother immediately pulled him behind her. "Inside. Now." "But Mother—" "I said inside."
Doors began closing one after another. A few villagers quietly gathered their baskets and stepped away from the road, pretending to be busy while secretly watching her. Even the village dogs became restless, whining before retreating beneath the wooden carts. Shen Lian continued toward the village center. Xu Yang watched from beneath the tree, his body slowly becoming rigid.Qing Li's smirk returned as he glanced at Xu Yang. "She is here." Xu Yang looked at Shen Lian, then quickly turned toward Qing Li. "Who is she? And why is she here?" Qing Li did not answer immediately.
Instead, he watched Shen Lian approach, his expression unusually serious beneath the teasing smile. "She is someone you hide from." Xu Yang's ears shot upright. "What?" He immediately shifted lower behind the tree, pulling his tail closer around himself. "Why would I hide from her? Who exactly is she?" Qing Li finally looked at him. "Her name is Shen Lian. She's a high-ranking demon from one of the old demon clans. She isn't the kind of person who walks into a village without a reason. She notices things other demons overlook, and once she becomes interested in something, she doesn't usually stop until she finds what she's looking for." Xu Yang swallowed. "And she knows me?" "Not personally," Qing Li replied. "But if she discovers what you are, she'll remember you."
Xu Yang's fingers tightened around the wooden beam behind him.Yan Luo nodded. Xu Yang stared at Shen Lian again. She was still walking through the village, greeting the frightened villagers with a polite smile as if she were simply another traveler passing through. No. This is bad... Xu Yang's heartbeat quickened. Why is someone like her here? Did she sense the disturbance? Did she come because of me?... His eyes moved toward the place where he had previously interfered with the spiritual threads around the village. If she finds the traces I left behind… He stopped himself before finishing the thought. No. Don't panic. I've hidden before. I can hide again... He took a slow breath, then looked at Qing Li. "What should I do?" Qing Li opened his mouth, but Yan Luo answered first. Yan Luo's gaze sharpened. "You can observe, but don't interfere. She is not your enemy… yet."
Xu Yang slowly nodded, though his hands remained tense against the tree. He looked back toward the path. Shen Lian had reached the edge of the wheat field. Her eyes moved across the village, taking in the houses, the villagers, the surrounding fields, and every small detail that seemed out of place. She looked almost relaxed, but Xu Yang could sense the sharpness beneath that calm expression. Then her gaze shifted slightly toward the old tree. Xu Yang froze. His breath caught in his throat. No...Her eyes remained there for only a moment.No... Stay calm. Don't let her see me....He lowered his body further, carefully controlling his breathing. His ears flattened against his hair, and his tail curled around his legs so tightly that it nearly covered him completely.
Beside him,Yan Luo's voice whispered softly in his mind."Curiosity is her nature.Be ready to hide." Qing Li leaned closer, keeping his voice low enough that only Xu Yang could hear. "Don't act like you're a cat hiding. Even a human can be interesting when caught in the right light." Xu Yang turned his head and glared at him, ears flattening. "I am not 'interesting.' I am invisible." Qing Li raised an eyebrow. "If you have to announce that you're invisible, you're probably doing a poor job." Xu Yang's eyes widened slightly. "Keep your voice down." Qing Li covered his mouth to hide a laugh. "Fine. But you should know that your ears are giving you away."
Xu Yang immediately pushed them down with one hand. "Better?" "Much better." "You're enjoying this far too much."Qing li smiled."What if I'm." Yan Luo's voice interrupted them before Xu Yang could argue further. "She's assessing the village for disruptions. Her presence alone will stir subtle chaos. Watch how the threads react." Xu Yang looked past the tree. The spiritual threads surrounding the village had begun to tremble almost imperceptibly. They were not breaking, but they were responding to Shen Lian's presence as if recognizing something powerful moving through their territory. Xu Yang's eyes narrowed. So I wasn't imagining it.... Shen Lian moved through the village, greeting the villagers politely but with a sharpness in her eyes that hinted at power. One villager bowed deeply as she passed. Another nervously stepped aside, nearly dropping the basket in his hands.
Shen Lian smiled at him and continued walking without comment. She eventually reached the place where Xu Yang had previously intervened. She stopped. Slowly, she crouched down and extended one delicate hand toward the soil. Her fingertips brushed across the ground. For several seconds, she said nothing. Xu Yang's stomach tightened. She found something... Shen Lian lifted her fingers slightly and studied the faint traces of spiritual energy clinging to them. Her expression remained calm, but the slight narrowing of her eyes told Xu Yang that she had discovered more than she expected. "She's clever." Qing Li murmured, watching her carefully. "And persistent. You'll have to stay sharper than usual."
Xu Yang swallowed and nodded without taking his eyes off Shen Lian. "How much can she sense?" Qing Li's smile faded. "Enough to become a problem if you make one mistake." Yan Luo's voice was calm, but his eyes gleamed. "She is not aligned with you. Observe, adapt, survive. Her actions will ripple further than you imagine." Xu Yang crouched low, ears twitching, tail flicking nervously behind him. He watched as Shen Lian slowly stood and looked across the village once more. For a moment, her gaze passed over the old tree again. Xu Yang held his breath.
Shen Lian did not approach. Instead, she turned toward the center of the village and continued walking, her robes moving gently behind her. Xu Yang hand pressed against his chest as he tried to calm his racing heartbeat. She didn't find me. At least not yet... Shen Lian's gaze swept over the village once more before she moved toward the center, clearly investigating the subtle disturbances. Qing Li smirked again. "Enjoy the show, little cat! She will shake things up before you know it." Yan Luo's voice drifted softly. "And the balance will tip slightly. But remember she is only the beginning of the storm." Xu Yang's eyes narrowed, ears flicking back. The storm is coming. And I have to survive it again...
