Chapter 17 - Chapter 17:- I'm Pregnant

The table went completely silent. Ha-yeon's eyes filled with tears. Eun-seo's lip trembled. Hyun-woo looked down, throat working hard.

Mi-Kyung's voice broke completely. "I'm sorry… I'm so sorry I didn't tell you sooner. But I was scared you'd judge me. Please… don't judge him. He's not taking advantage of me. He's giving me the love I never thought I'd find again."

Ha-yeon stood up first, tears running down her face. She walked around the table and hugged her mother tightly. "Mom… I'm so sorry. We were wrong. We listened to Tae-joon. We doubted you. I'm so sorry."

Eun-seo followed, crying openly. "Mom… I'm sorry too. I believed stupid lies. He's… he's good for you. I can see it now."

Hyun-woo remained seated for a moment, his eyes red. Then he stood slowly and bowed his head to Min-seok. "I'm sorry, hyung. I was wrong. Thank you for protecting Mom, and for making her happy again.

It's something we, as her children, should have done. Instead, we became too self-absorbed in our own lives and ignored her happiness, forgetting altogether that our mother has feelings too."

Min-seok's eyes were calm. He stood and bowed back. "Thank you… for giving me a chance."

Eun-seo turned to Eun-ji, who was sitting quietly, eyes wide.

"Eun-ji unnie…" Eun-seo said, voice small. "I'm really sorry. I questioned your brother. I listened to bad things about him. I didn't know… I'm so sorry."

Eun-ji's eyes softened. She stood up and pulled Eun-seo into a gentle hug. "It's okay, Eun-seo. I don't hold it against you. You were just worried about your mom. I understand. We're okay now."

Eun-seo hugged her back tightly, crying into her shoulder. "Thank you…"

The whole table was crying now—soft, healing tears. Mi-Kyung reached for Min-seok's hand across the table. He squeezed it tightly, eyes full of love.

The meal continued, but now it was warmer, lighter. Laughter returned. Stories were shared. Families began to blend.

And Tae-joon sat in silence, face pale, knowing he had lost any hold he thought he had.

She looked at Min-seok, eyes soft and shining with tears of happiness. "And now… I'm pregnant with his child."

The table went completely quiet. Ha-yeon's eyes widened, hand flying to her mouth. Eun-seo gasped softly, eyes instantly misty. Hyun-woo stared, fork frozen halfway to his mouth.

But no one reacted with anger or shock. They had seen how their mom looked at him all afternoon—how she glowed, how she leaned into his gentle touches, how her smile reached her eyes in a way it hadn't in years. The love between them was impossible to miss.

Ha-yeon spoke first, voice gentle and a little shaky. She sighed hard, shaking her head with a small, disbelieving laugh. "Mom… if he makes you happy… then I'm happy for you. Truly. But… you two already went that far!

What was the point of even asking for our approval? It's not like you were going to abort the child if we disagreed. Like you guys were going to marry first, then sex, and here you are already pregnant with his child… skipping so many stages in between."

She rubbed her temple lightly, a faint headache forming as she looked around the table—at her mom glowing with happiness, at Min-seok's calm, protective presence, at his sisters who were now going to be… family?

The family dynamic felt suddenly huge and weird, and she couldn't help the tiny sigh that escaped. In her mind, she remembered the first time she saw Min-seok: tall, handsome, gentle. She had found him attractive instantly.

Then she heard his backstory—how he lost his mother, raised his sisters alone for ten years, became the strong one for everyone—and her heart melted. She had developed a quiet crush on him, the dependable, mature kind of man she secretly admired.

But then she saw how her mom looked at him… and now this. Pregnant. No way forward for her. She sighed helplessly again, accepting it.

Mi-Kyung reached over and squeezed Ha-yeon's hand gently, eyes soft and understanding.

"I know, Hyun-ah," she said quietly, voice warm but steady. "I know it's sudden. I know it feels like everything happened out of order. I didn't plan it this way either… but when you love someone, sometimes things just move faster than you expect. We didn't skip steps to hurt you or to be reckless. It just… happened because we both felt it was right."

She gave Ha-yeon's hand a small, reassuring squeeze.

Mi-Kyung reached over and squeezed Ha-yeon's hand gently, eyes soft and understanding.

"I know, Hyun-ah," she said quietly, voice warm but steady. "I know it's sudden. I know it feels like everything happened out of order. I didn't plan it this way… but when you love someone, sometimes things just move faster than you expect. We didn't skip steps to hurt you or to be reckless. It just… happened because we both felt it was right."

She paused, her gaze softening even more as she looked at Min-seok for a brief moment, then back at her daughter.

"I decided to get pregnant with him because… he's done so much for me. More than anyone ever has. He saved me from the worst moment of my life, held me through my fear, gave me back my safety, my home, my hope.

He's been my strength when I had none left.

And on his birthday… the day he finally let himself feel joy after ten years of pain… I wanted to give him something no one else could.

I wanted to give him a family of his own. A child. A future. I thought… getting pregnant would be the best gift I could give him. The best way to show him he's not alone anymore. That he's loved completely."

Her voice trembled with emotion, but she smiled through it.

"Maybe we went too far," she added, pulling her tongue out a little like a small girl caught being naughty, her eyes twinkling playfully even as her cheeks flushed. "But I don't regret it. I wanted it. I chose it. And I'm so happy I did."

She squeezed Ha-yeon's hand again, her expression turning tender and sincere.

"I'm not asking you to pretend it's not a lot to take in. The age gap, the pregnancy, all of it… I understand why it feels overwhelming. But I want you to know this: he's not manipulating me.

He treats me with more respect and care than anyone ever has. And for the first time in years, I feel truly happy. Safe. Loved. I want you to see that… and I want you to be happy for me too. That's all I'm asking."

Ha-yeon looked at her mother for a long moment, eyes still wide, then slowly nodded. She let out a soft breath.

"Okay, Mom… I see it. I see how happy you are. And… yeah, it's a lot. But if he's really good to you… then I'm happy for you."

Inside, though, Ha-yeon's mind was racing. She kept her face calm and gentle, but her thoughts were already turning.

'I'm definitely going to talk to Min-seok and his sisters separately. I don't mind Mom being in love with someone 12 years younger—I really don't.

Age is just a number when it's real love. But now that she's pregnant… I have to be sure. I have to know he doesn't have any bad intentions. I need to know his story isn't fabricated.'

As a nurse, she had seen it too many times—women who came into the hospital pregnant, swollen bellies and broken hearts, abandoned by the men who promised forever. Some cried in the hallways, some stared blankly at the walls, some even tried to hurt themselves. Every case left a mark on her.

'Love can be blind sometimes,' she thought. 'Most of those women were blinded by love. They trusted too fast, got pregnant, and then the man ran away. Mom's been alone for so long… she's finally happy.

But things moved so fast. She's already pregnant. I just… I can't let her end up like one of those women I nurse every week. I can't let her suffer anymore than she already has.'

She felt a pang of guilt twist in her stomach. 'It was my mistake to neglect her happiness all these years. I was too focused on my own life, my job, my studies. But now… I won't let her down again. I have to make sure she's safe. I have to protect her—even from herself if I have to.'

Ha-yeon took another slow breath, keeping her expression soft and supportive. She smiled at her mother, hiding the quiet determination in her heart.

She would talk to Min-seok. She would talk to his sisters. She would make absolutely sure he was the real thing.

Because her mother deserved happiness—and safety—more than anything.

Eun-seo nodded quickly, wiping at her eyes, a tiny giggle escaping through her tears. "He seems really nice. And… you look so happy, Mom. Like really happy." She paused, then added with a shy grin, "Damn Mom… you two are way faster than kids these days."

Mi-Kyung's cheeks instantly turned bright red. She let out a small, embarrassed laugh and playfully swatted Eun-seo's arm.

"Yah! Eun-seo-ah!" she scolded lightly, voice full of mock sternness, but her eyes were sparkling with happiness. "What kind of way is that to talk to your mom?"

Eun-seo grinned wider, leaning forward with a teasing glint in her eye. "What? It's true! Kids these days take months to even confess, and you two are already… you know…" She wiggled her eyebrows dramatically. "Mom, you're wilder than us!"

Mi-Kyung covered her face with both hands, peeking through her fingers, cheeks burning even brighter. "Aigoo… stop it! You're embarrassing me!"

Eun-seo giggled harder, clearly enjoying her mom's reaction. "Look at you blushing! You're so cute when you're shy, Mom. But seriously… you look so alive. Like… you're glowing. I haven't seen you this happy in forever."

Mi-Kyung lowered her hands slowly, still smiling shyly, eyes soft. "Yeah… I am happy. Really happy."

She reached over and gently pinched Eun-seo's cheek. "But don't tease your mom too much, okay? I'm still your mother."

Eun-seo laughed, leaning into the pinch. "Okay, okay~ But you two are so sweet together. I like it."

Mi-Kyung's blush lingered, but her smile was brighter than ever. She glanced at Min-seok, eyes full of love, then back at her daughter—feeling completely, wonderfully alive.

Hyun-woo set his fork down slowly. He looked at Min-seok for a long moment, then at his mother. His voice was low but sincere. "If you hurt her… I'll never forgive you."

Then he glanced at Min-seok's sisters—Soo-min, Hye-jin, and Eun-ji—and let out a small, defeated sigh. "And… why are such beauties suddenly my sisters now?"

He had been trying to flirt lightly with Hye-jin earlier—complimenting her hair, making her laugh—until Mi-Kyung had caught it and called him out immediately.

"Hyun-woo," she had said firmly but with a small smile, "they're going to be your sisters now. Behave."

Hyun-woo had sighed dramatically, shoulders slumping. "Why are such beauties suddenly my sisters…?" he muttered again now, half-joking, half-genuine, making the table erupt into soft laughter.

But then his eyes widened as the full realization hit him like a truck. He froze, staring at the three girls, then at his mom, then at Min-seok, mouth opening and closing like a fish.

"Wait… wait, wait, wait…" He leaned forward, voice rising in pure dramatic panic. "If Mom's pregnant with his kid… that means you two are going to get married, right?

Like… husband and wife? Which means…" He pointed at Soo-min, Hye-jin, and Eun-ji with a horrified expression. "These goddesses… aren't just my sisters… they're going to be my STEP-AUNTS?!"

He clutched his head with both hands, looking like the world had ended.

"Noooo! This is the worst fate ever! I thought I was at least getting three beautiful new sisters to flirt with… and now they're my aunts?! How is this fair?!"

The table burst into laughter. Mi-Kyung covered her mouth, trying not to giggle too hard. Min-seok's sisters were cracking up.
