Chapter 27 - The shadow hunt in the dark forest

At nightfall, the world seemed to collapse into darkness.

The last trace of sunlight vanished beyond the horizon, leaving only a dense, endless forest stretching in every direction like a living wall.

Ava, Sunny, and the baby moved through it silently.

No longer in the city.

No longer being chased.

But not yet safe.

The forest itself felt alive.

Its towering trees blocked the sky, swallowing moonlight until only scattered fragments reached the ground. Shadows stretched unnaturally between roots and stones, as if something beneath the earth was breathing.

Ava held the baby tightly against her chest, her steps light but steady. She did not speak much. Her eyes scanned everything—every movement, every sound, every shift in air.

Sunny walked beside her.

At first.

But something was wrong.

His strength was fading.

Not slowly—but sharply.

His body felt empty, like a flame starved of fuel. His limbs were heavy. His breathing uneven. His once-sharp instincts dulled under the pressure of hunger.

He realized it clearly.

In this state… he could not fight.

Not properly.

Not at all.

Eventually, they stopped in a small clearing surrounded by thick trees and tangled roots. A faint stream flowed nearby, its sound soft but constant in the silence.

Ava gently placed the baby on a safe patch of moss, ensuring it was secure.

Then she turned to Sunny.

"Go and eat," she said calmly.

Sunny blinked. "What?"

Ava didn't change her expression.

"Go and hunt. I will roast what you bring."

Sunny frowned immediately. "No. I can't just leave you here—"

But before he could finish, something strange happened.

His body moved.

Not by his will.

His feet stepped backward. Then turned. Then began walking into the forest.

"Ava—!" he tried to resist. "What are you doing?!"

No answer.

Only silence.

She had controlled him.

Gently—but completely.

Within seconds, he disappeared into the dark forest.

Then—

The control released.

Sunny stumbled and caught himself on a tree.

"…Tch."

He turned back—but the clearing was already swallowed by distance and shadow.

Ava was gone from sight.

Only the faint sound of the baby remained.

Sunny clenched his fists.

He understood what she was doing.

Survival.

But still…

He hated it.

And so, he turned forward.

Into the forest.

The deeper Sunny went, the more oppressive the forest became.

Roots twisted like veins across the ground. Strange insects flickered in the air like floating sparks. The silence wasn't peaceful—it was watching.

Every step felt like danger.

Every sound felt close.

Sunny moved carefully at first, relying on instinct alone. But his body was weak. His speed was reduced. His senses dulled by hunger.

"I need something fast…" he muttered.

But the forest did not answer.

Instead—

It waited.

Then—

SCRRRT.

A metallic scraping sound echoed through the trees.

Sunny froze.

Slowly, he turned.

Between the shadows—

A creature emerged.

A scorpion-like beast.

Massive. Armored. Twisted.

Its claws were uneven and sharp, its tail arched high, dripping venom that hissed as it touched the ground.

And one of its eyes was gone.

Sunny's heart sank.

Not prey.

Predator.

The creature clicked its claws.

Once.

Twice.

Then it charged.

Sunny ran instantly.

But he realized something terrifying within seconds—

He was slow.

Not injured.

Not weakened by battle.

Just human.

"Damn it…" he muttered. "I really am weak right now."

A claw slammed down behind him, shattering a tree.

He barely dodged.

Barely survived.

But the creature adapted fast.

It hunted him like prey.

Cornering him.

Driving him into tighter spaces.

Until there was nowhere left to run.

Sunny stopped.

The creature stopped.

Silence.

Then Sunny slowly turned.

"…If I'm going to die," he said quietly, "I might as well understand what I am."

The creature roared.

And attacked.

Something inside Sunny awakened.

The Cheetah Spirit.

His body reacted instantly.

Muscles tightened. Vision sharpened. Reflexes ignited.

His stance lowered.

And he moved.

Fast.

He dodged a crushing claw, sliding under the attack. His hand struck the creature's leg, leaving a shallow wound.

The creature roared in pain.

It struck back violently.

Sunny dodged again.

Again.

Again.

But the creature learned.

It began predicting him.

And slowly—

Sunny was pushed back.

Until he reached a dead end between jagged rocks.

No escape.

No dodge path.

Only survival or death.

The creature raised its claw.

Sunny exhaled slowly.

"…So this is it."

The claw fell.

But—

A blur struck the creature mid-motion.

A shockwave of force knocked it sideways.

Sunny's eyes widened.

"What—?"

The forest changed.

Shadows deepened.

Light dimmed.

The air turned heavy, as if reality itself was being swallowed.

Then a voice echoed through the darkness.

"Enough."

Ava.

She stepped forward from the shadows.

Calm.

Unshaken.

Absolute.

The baby was safe elsewhere—hidden and protected.

The creature roared and charged her instantly.

Ava raised her hand.

The ground split open into pure shadow.

The creature hesitated for the first time.

Too late.

Shadow chains erupted from beneath the earth, wrapping around its legs, body, and tail, dragging it downward.

It roared violently, struggling with all its strength.

But the shadows did not break.

They absorbed everything.

Sunny stared in disbelief.

"…She could do this the whole time?"

Ava finally looked at him briefly.

"Not always," she said calmly. "Only when the situation is clear."

The creature struggled harder.

Ava stepped forward.

Each step deepened the darkness.

Then she closed her hand.

"Shadow Binding."

The shadows struck.

Not like force.

But like judgment itself.

The creature's roar was cut off instantly as it was engulfed in collapsing darkness, pinned and silenced completely.

When the shadows faded—

It was over.

Still.

Silent.

Dead.

The forest returned to normal.

Ava lowered her hand and turned away.

"Come," she said softly. "We still need food."

Sunny exhaled slowly, still processing what he had just seen.

"…Unbelievable."

Later…

The massive corpse of the scorpion-like beast lay half-buried in broken earth and snapped roots.

Ava approached it calmly.

Without hesitation, she began cutting into its armored body using condensed shadows, peeling away the hard shell where the flesh was softer underneath.

Sunny joined after a moment, still slightly shaken.

"You're really going to eat this?" he asked.

Ava didn't stop working.

"We need strength," she said simply. "This creature is filled with energy."

Sunny sighed but helped.

Together, they extracted large portions of the creature's flesh—dense, dark, and strangely warm with residual energy.

The baby remained safe in the distance, untouched by the violence.

Soon, a small fire was prepared.

The flesh began to roast.

The smell filled the clearing.

And for the first time since their escape…

They had food.

Sunny stared into the fire quietly.

"…This world really is insane."

Ava sat beside him, watching the flames.

"Yes," she said softly. "But we are still alive."

And deep in the forest…

Something else watched them.
