Chapter 25 - Chapter 25: The Queen's Gambit

The days that followed Lyra's departure settled into a tense, grinding rhythm. Winter's End was a fortress purging itself of a disease. The public executions of the remaining merchants from the list were swift and brutal, their bodies left to hang from the gates as a stark warning. The atmosphere in the castle was one of fearful respect. The soldiers were loyal, the quartermaster was honest, and the stores were secure. On the surface, I had tamed the North.

But beneath the surface, I was a man waiting for the other shoe to drop. Lord Marius. The name was a splinter in my mind. He was the ghost in the machine, the whisperer who had orchestrated this entire mess. And he was out there, somewhere in the south, plotting his next move.

I was in the war room, studying a map of the coastline, trying to anticipate Marius's strategy, when a captain of the guard burst in.

"My Lord Protector! A rider approaches! A royal courier, flying the Queen's banner!"

My blood ran cold. Seraphina.

"Bring him to the great hall," I commanded, my voice tight. "And have Valerius meet me there."

The great hall was cold and empty, the only light coming from the pale gray light filtering through the high windows. The bloodstain was still there, a dark, grim reminder of the price of defiance. I stood before the hearth, Valerius a silent, ominous presence at my side.

The courier was a young man, no older than twenty, with the arrogant, self-important air of the court. He strode into the hall as if he owned it, his eyes sweeping over me with open disdain.

"Lord Protector Lucien," he said, his voice nasal and condescending. "I am Reynard, a page in the Queen's service. I bring a message from Her Majesty, Queen Seraphina."

He unrolled a scroll with a flourish and began to read in a loud, clear voice. "To our loyal servant, Lucien, Lord Protector of the Northern Marches. Greetings. It has come to our attention that the North is in a state of… turmoil. Reports of treason and summary executions have reached the capital. While we commend your diligence in rooting out such insidious elements, we are concerned by the… heavy-handedness of your methods."

I gritted my teeth. It was a masterpiece of political doublespeak. She was condemning me while pretending to praise me.

"Therefore," Reynard continued, "in the interest of fostering stability and ensuring the continued loyalty of the North, the Queen has deemed it necessary to send a special envoy. A representative of the crown to assist you in governing, to advise you in matters of state, and to report directly to Her Majesty on the situation in the North. This envoy will arrive within the week. You are commanded to grant her full access to the fortress and to cooperate with her in all matters. Signed, by Her own hand, Queen Seraphina."

He rolled up the scroll with a smug little smile. "Her Majesty's envoy is a woman of considerable talent and influence. Lady Isolde of Blackwood."

The name hit me like a punch to the gut. Isolde. Not the Isolde I had killed, but her sister. The last remaining member of the treacherous House Blackwood. A woman known for her beauty, her cunning, and her burning hatred for me.

The system's voice was a calm, dispassionate counterpoint to the storm raging inside me. A MILF. A conquest. The sheer audacity of it almost made me laugh. Seraphina wasn't just sending a spy; she was sending a test. A beautiful, deadly test wrapped in silk and spite.

"Does Her Majesty have any other commands?" I asked, my voice dangerously calm.

"Just that, my Lord," Reynard said, his smirk widening. "Oh, and she sends her… warmest regards."

I took a step forward, my shadow falling over the smug little page. "Then you may give her my warmest reply. Tell the Queen that the North is loyal, but it is not her kennel. I will welcome her envoy, as commanded. But Lady Isolde will find that Winter's End has its own laws, and its own Lord Protector. She will be treated with the respect her station demands, but she will obey my commands. Or she will learn the same lesson as Alaric and the other traitors."

Reynard's smirk faltered, a flicker of fear in his eyes. He had expected a courtier, not a wolf.

"Now get out of my hall," I snarled. "Before I forget my manners."

He practically fled, his dignity in tatters.

Valerius waited until the courier was gone before speaking. "This is a poison pill, my Lord. She puts a snake in your bed and dares you to sleep."

"She does," I agreed, my mind racing. "But she also makes a mistake. She underestimates me. She thinks I am just a soldier, a blunt instrument. She sends me Isolde, thinking her hatred will blind her and her beauty will distract me. She thinks she knows me."

"And do you?"

I turned and looked at the Castellan, a slow, predatory smile spreading across my face. "She knows the man who killed her sister. She doesn't know the man who stands before you now. Isolde is coming here to destroy me. I will give her the warmest welcome in the North. And then, piece by piece, I will take everything she has. Her pride. Her influence. Her will. And when she has nothing left, I will take her, too."

*—[Skill Unlocked: Queen's Shadow (Passive)]—*

*—[Effect: You gain a heightened awareness of political intrigue and deception. You can now sense the true intentions behind diplomatic words and actions, making it harder for you to be manipulated by courtly schemes.]—*

The new skill settled into my mind, a cool, clear lens through which to view the coming storm. Seraphina had played her gambit. She had sent her most beautiful, most dangerous piece. But she didn't know that I had been playing a different game all along. She had sent me a queen to conquer.

And I never lost a game.
