It started with a whisper.
Not a ghost whisper. A Lyra whisper.
"Midnight. Courtyard. Bring Keifer."
Jay blinked at the note slipped under her door. "What?"
Mila looked over her shoulder. "Lyra's planning something."
"Lyra's ALWAYS planning something."
"This looks bigger."
Jay stared at the note. Her stomach felt weird. Not scared. Just... curious.
"We should go," she said.
"Obviously."
"And bring Keifer."
"Obviously."
Keifer was not excited.
"It's midnight. We have class tomorrow. This is ridiculous."
"It's LYRA. This is normal."
"Nothing about Lyra is normal."
"That's why we love her."
He sighed. Pulled on his jacket. "Fine. But if this is another 'game' like last time—"
"It'll be fun."
"Your definition of fun is different from mine."
She kissed his cheek. "Come on, grumpy. Adventure awaits."
He followed. Because he always followed her.
The courtyard was dark.
No lights. No moon. Just shadows and silence.
Jay shivered. "Where is everyone?"
A whisper behind her. "Here."
She spun around.
Her friends were there. All of them. Lyra, Adrian, Bella, Mila, Daniel. Even some Crimson Oaths she didn't know well.
And in the center, a circle of candles.
"What is this?" Jay asked.
Lyra stepped forward. Glowing with excitement. "Tonight, Jayfer faces its greatest challenge."
"What challenge?"
Lyra pointed at the candles. "The Midnight Dare. A tradition. A test. A game."
"What kind of game?"
"The kind where you and Keifer answer questions. Truth questions. Real questions. No hiding."
Jay looked at Keifer. He looked at her.
"Why?" she asked.
"Because you two are legend. Because we love you. Because we want to KNOW." Lyra's voice softened. "Because real love shares everything. Even the hard stuff."
Jay's heart squeezed.
"Okay," she whispered.
They sat in the circle. Candles flickering. Friends surrounding them.
Lyra held a scroll. "First question. For Jay."
Jay swallowed. "Okay."
"What's your biggest fear? Not ghosts. Not shadows. Real fear."
Jay was quiet for a moment.
"Losing him," she finally said. "Not to death. To doubt. To time. To the idea that one day he'll wake up and realize I'm not enough."
The circle went silent.
Keifer's hand found hers. Squeezed tight.
"Next question," Lyra said softly. "For Keifer."
He nodded.
"What's YOUR biggest fear?"
He didn't hesitate.
"Hurting her. Not on purpose. But accidentally. With my coldness. My distance. The walls I built before she came." He looked at Jay. "I'm afraid that one day, those walls will come back. And she'll be on the other side."
Jay's eyes burned.
"Next question." Lyra's voice was gentle now. "For both of you."
They waited.
"When did you know? Really know. That this was forever."
Jay spoke first. "The closet. When we were locked in. He said he liked me. I couldn't answer. But in that moment, I knew. No one else would ever make me feel that way."
Keifer spoke next. "The courtyard. When she fell into me for the first time. She was so angry. So alive. So real. I knew then that I'd never want anyone else."
The circle was completely silent.
Bella was crying. Mila was smiling. Adrian was writing, but gently, like he was capturing something sacred. Daniel secretly enjoying it.
Lyra wiped her eyes. "Last question. For both of you."
"Okay."
"If you could promise one thing. Right now. In front of all of us. What would it be?"
Jay looked at Keifer. He looked at her.
"I promise," Jay said, "to always fight for you. Even when it's hard. Even when I'm scared. Even when the walls try to come back."
Keifer squeezed her hand. "I promise to always let you in. To never build walls against you. To choose you every single day. Forever."
The circle ERUPTED.
Not loud. Not chaotic. Just... warmth. Clapping. Tears. Love.
Lyra hugged them both. "You passed. You definitely passed."
"Passed what?" Jay laughed.
"The test. The dare. The everything." Lyra pulled back, grinning. "Now let's eat. I brought snacks."
They stayed in the courtyard until dawn.
Talking. Laughing. Eating terrible snacks. Watching the stars fade.
Jay lay with her head in Keifer's lap. His fingers combed through her hair.
"Today was weird," she murmured.
"Good weird?"
"The best weird."
He smiled down at her. "I love you."
"I love you too."
"Even though you're wrong about coffee?"
"Even though you drink dirt water."
He laughed. Quiet. Real.
"Forever?" he asked.
"Forever."
The next morning, Lyra's whiteboard had a new section.
THE MIDNIGHT DARE
Tears Shed: 12 (happy tears)
Promises Made: 2 (eternal)
Snacks Eaten: Too many
Jayfer Status: CONFIRMED FOREVER
Bond Strength: LEGENDARY
Next Milestone: WHO CARES? THEY HAVE FOREVER.
Jay read it. Smiled.
Keifer appeared beside her. Coffee in hand.
"Ready for class?"
"Ready for you."
He kissed her forehead. "Smooth."
"I learned from the best."
"The best?"
"You." She poked his chest. "Now walk me to class, Principal."
"Yes, ma'am."
They walked. Hands together. Hearts full.
Normal. Perfect. THEIRS.
