Chapter 74 - Chapter 73: The New Nightmares

It started with a gate.

The same gate Jay and her friends had stumbled through months ago. Rusted iron. Blood-red letters. The words "BLACK HOLLOW UNIVERSITY" glowing in the afternoon sun.

But this time, the students walking through weren't scared.

They were arrogant.

Five of them. Three boys, two girls. Expensive clothes. Perfect hair. Faces that said "we're better than you and we know it."

Barf Viper led them in. His expression was its usual unreadable self, but something about his posture said "these ones are trouble."

"New students," he announced to the gathered crowd. "Transfers from Northwood Academy. Treat them... carefully."

The tallest boy—blonde, sharp features, smirk that begged to be punched—looked around the courtyard like he was inspecting garbage.

"This is it?" he said loudly. "The famous Black Hollow? Looks like a haunted shed."

His friends laughed. The kind of laugh that meant they'd practiced being mean.

Students whispered. Glared. Said nothing.

Jay, watching from the Crimson side, felt her jaw tighten.

"Charming," she muttered.

Keifer's hand found hers. Squeezed once. "Ignore them."

"Easy for you to say. You're the Principal."

"And you're my girlfriend. They're not worth your energy."

She wanted to believe him.

The new students made themselves known quickly.

First day of classes, they sat in the front row. Answered every question. Showed off constantly. Made sure everyone knew they were "top of their class" at Northwood.

Second day, they started making comments.

"This school is so... rustic," one of the girls said loudly. "Do they not have proper magical heating?"

"The ghosts are charming, I suppose. If you like that sort of thing."

"The students look... tired. Is that a fashion choice?"

Jay's grip on her pencil tightened.

Mila touched her arm. "Ignore them."

"I'm trying."

"Try harder."

Third day, they found Jay.

Not by accident. They sought her out.

The blonde boy—Caleb, his name was Caleb—appeared beside her at lunch. Smiled like they were old friends.

"You're Jay Mariano, right?"

She looked up. Wary. "Yes."

"I've heard about you." His smile widened. "The Principal's girlfriend. Very... impressive."

Something in his tone made her skin crawl.

"What do you want?"

"Just to talk. Get to know the local... celebrities." He glanced at Keifer's table. "He's very intense, isn't he? The Principal. Always watching. Always guarding."

"He's my boyfriend."

"I know." Caleb leaned closer. "Just wondering what someone like you sees in someone like him."

Jay stood up. Slow. Deliberate.

"Someone like me?"

"Loud. Fiery. Interesting." His eyes traveled down, up. Disgusting. "You could do better."

Keifer was already moving. Jay saw him from the corner of her eye. But she held up a hand. Stop.

"I could do better?" she repeated. Voice calm. Too calm.

"Much better." Caleb smiled. "Someone who appreciates fire. Instead of trying to control it."

Jay laughed. Not a nice laugh.

"You've been here three days," she said. "You don't know me. You don't know him. You don't know anything about this school or the people in it. So here's some advice: shut your mouth, sit down, and learn some respect before someone teaches it to you the hard way."

Caleb's smile flickered. "Is that a threat?"

"It's a promise."

She walked away. Didn't look back.

Keifer met her halfway. His eyes were burning.

"I had it handled," she said.

"I know." He pulled her close. "But I was ready."

"I know that too."

The confrontation escalated.

Caleb didn't like being embarrassed. His friends didn't like seeing him lose.

They started spreading rumors. Small at first. Then bigger.

"Jay Mariano only got into Crimson because she's dating the Principal."

"She can't even control her own magic. Pathetic."

"He's only with her because she's easy."

The last one reached Jay during breakfast.

She went very still.

Mila saw it. "Jay. Don't."

"Don't what?"

"Don't do what you're thinking."

"I'm not thinking anything."

"You're thinking about murder."

"I'm thinking about conversation. Firm conversation."

"That's murder talk."

Jay stood up. Walked across the cafeteria.

The new students were at a corner table. Laughing. Eating. Looking pleased with themselves.

Jay stopped in front of them.

"Which one of you said it?"

Caleb looked up. Innocent smile. "Said what?"

"About me being easy."

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"Liar."

His smile tightened. "Prove it."

Jay leaned down. Close. Too close.

"I don't need proof. I need you to shut your mouth. About me. About Keifer. About this school. You don't belong here. You haven't earned anything. You're just rich kids with attitude and no idea what real danger looks like."

Caleb stood. Towering over her. Trying to intimidate.

It didn't work.

"And if I don't shut my mouth?" he asked.

Jay smiled. Not nice.

"Then I'll shut it for you."

The whole cafeteria was watching now.

Students gathering. Whispering. Teachers hovering, unsure whether to intervene.

Keifer stood at the edge. Watching. Not interfering.

Lyra appeared beside him. "Aren't you going to stop her?"

"No."

"She might fight him."

"I know."

"She might WIN."

"I know that too."

"You're just going to WATCH?"

Keifer's eyes never left Jay. Proud. Steady. Completely hers.

"I'm going to watch my girlfriend defend herself. And this school. And me." He almost smiled. "Why would I stop that?"

Lyra stared. Then grinned. "You're the best boyfriend ever."

"I know."

Caleb made the first move.

Shoved Jay. Hard.

She stumbled back. Caught herself. Looked at him.

"That's it?" she asked. "That's all you've got?"

He swung. Fist aimed at her face.

She ducked. Easily. Like she'd been doing this her whole life.

(She had. Fighting shadows. Fighting ghosts. Fighting her own fears. A rich boy with a temper was NOTHING.)

She came up inside his guard. Elbow to his stomach. He doubled over.

His friends moved. Two of them.

Jay spun. Kicked one in the knee. He went down screaming. Elbowed the other in the nose. Blood. More screaming.

Caleb recovered. Lunged at her.

She sidestepped. Grabbed his arm. Used his momentum to throw him into a table.

The table cracked.

Caleb lay on the floor, gasping.

Jay stood over him. Not even breathing hard.

"Next time," she said quietly, "keep my name out of your mouth."

She walked away.

The cafeteria was DEAD silent.

Then—

EXPLODED.

"JAY JUST—" "SHE TOOK DOWN THREE OF THEM—" "THAT WAS INCREDIBLE—" "THE NEW KIDS ARE ON THE FLOOR—" "JAY MARIANO IS A LEGEND—"

Lyra was screaming. Adrian was writing so fast his pen smoked. Bella was crying and sketching simultaneously. Mila was laughing with relief. Daniel was just shaking his head, amazed.

Keifer met Jay halfway.

She was shaking slightly. Adrenaline. But her eyes were clear.

"I had it handled," she said.

"I know." He pulled her close. "You were amazing."

"I was angry."

"You were magnificent."

She laughed. Weak. "Same thing?"

"Same thing." He kissed her forehead. "I love you."

"I love you too."

"Let's get you out of here."

"Good plan."

They walked out together. Hand in hand.

The cafeteria watched them go. Silent. Reverent.

Then the whispers started.

"Did you see her move?"

"She took down THREE of them."

"The Principal just watched. Proud."

"That's love."

"That's POWER."

Later, in his office, Keifer held her.

"You could have been hurt," he said quietly.

"I wasn't."

"You could have been."

"But I wasn't."

He pulled back. Looked at her. "I've never seen you fight like that."

"First time?"

"No. I've seen you fight shadows. Fight fears. Fight magic. But this was different. This was... primal."

She shrugged. "He pissed me off."

"The way you moved. The precision. The power." He shook his head. "Jay, you're incredible."

She blushed. Actually blushed. "Stop."

"No." He cupped her face. "You defended yourself. You defended me. You defended this school. In front of everyone. And you were glorious."

"Keifer..."

"I love you." He kissed her. Soft. Reverent. "I'm so proud of you."

She cried. Just a little.

"Shut up," she whispered.

"Never."

The next morning, the new students were quiet.

Caleb wouldn't meet anyone's eyes. His friends stayed close to him, nursing bruises, avoiding everyone.

Word had spread. The whole school knew.

Jay Mariano took down three students. Alone. In the cafeteria. And the Principal watched, proud.

Lyra's whiteboard was EPIC.
