Chapter 82 - Chapter 81: The Almost Graduation

It started with a letter.

Not from the Magical Council this time. From the school. Official black and gold stationery. Principal Morticia's seal.

Dear Students of Black Hollow University,

As the end of the academic year approaches, we begin preparations for graduation. All students are required to submit their plans for life after Black Hollow by the end of the month.

Signed,

Principal Morticia Black Hollow

Jay stared at the letter. Her heart dropped.

"Graduation," she whispered.

Mila looked at her own letter. "It's happening."

"We're leaving."

"Eventually. Not yet."

"But soon." Jay's hands shook. "What am I going to do? Where am I going to go? What if—"

Mila grabbed her arms. "Jay. Breathe."

"I can't breathe. I can't think. Everything is changing."

"Nothing has changed yet. We're still here. Keifer's still here. Everything is fine."

But Jay couldn't shake the feeling. The clock was ticking. Time was running out.

She found Keifer in his office. He was staring at his own letter.

"You got one too," she said.

"The Principal's letter? Yes."

"What are you going to put? For your plans?"

He was quiet for a moment. "I don't know."

"You don't know?"

"The Council offer is still open. But I haven't decided." He looked at her. "What about you?"

"I don't know either."

They sat in silence. The future hung between them, heavy and uncertain.

The next few weeks were strange.

Everyone was thinking about after. Where they'd go. What they'd do. Who they'd become.

Lyra talked about traveling. Seeing the world. Documenting magical phenomena.

Adrian talked about research. Big labs. Big discoveries.

Bella talked about art school. Studying with masters. Becoming someone.

Mila talked about helping people. Healing. Making things better.

Daniel just shrugged. "I'll figure it out."

But Jay couldn't figure anything out.

Every time she thought about leaving Black Hollow, her chest tightened. Leaving the halls. Leaving the ghosts. Leaving her friends. Leaving him.

"You're thinking about it again," Keifer said one night.

They were in his room. Lying in the dark. Holding each other.

"I can't stop."

"Neither can I."

"Keifer... what if we go different places? What if the Council sends you somewhere far? What if I can't follow?"

He pulled her closer. "Then I don't go."

"You can't give up your future for me."

"I'm not. You ARE my future."

She cried. He held her.

"Whatever happens," he whispered, "we figure it out together. Promise."

"Promise."

The deadline came.

Jay sat in her room, staring at the blank form. Plans after Black Hollow.

She picked up her pen.

I don't know where I'm going. But I know who I'm going with.

She signed it. Dropped it in the box.

Keifer sat in his office. Same blank form. Same impossible question.

He wrote two words.

With Jay.

Lyra found out about their answers. Of course she did. She was Lyra.

Her whiteboard the next morning was legendary.

He kissed her forehead. "That's all I need."

They walked away together.

Unknown future. Certain love.

Perfect. Always.
